AMT/ERTL | No. 8895 | 1:48 | Douglas A-20J Havoc (WIP)
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/6/1/9/1611619-49836-72-720.jpg)
So I thought I'd build something that wasn't jet powered for a change.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/6/2/0/1611620-49836-80-720.jpg)
Really nice instructions with this charming kit.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/6/2/1/1611621-49836-79-720.jpg)
I am intending on following the paint guide on this one more than normal. I've found that Tamiya limonene cement is good for securing differing materials without causing an adverse reaction to the plastic - lead fishing weights being used here.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/6/2/2/1611622-49836-56-720.jpg)
I know, it's a bit rudimentary compared to all these flash aftermarket cockpit sets - but as always, my aim is just to build the kit as it is sold. Colour touches just add some interest, they're not historically accurate.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/6/2/3/1611623-49836-18-720.jpg)
Bit of wear and tear being added. Foreward bomb aiming section is coloured as per kit instructions. I've tried to roughen it up a bit to all look worn. More to do...
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/6/2/4/1611624-49836-73-720.jpg)
Getting neater.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/6/2/5/1611625-49836-68-720.jpg)
Decided I should cram in even more weight in the hope that it won't be a tail sitter.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/6/2/6/1611626-49836-24-720.jpg)
Joining fuselage...
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/1/2/6/1612126-49836-54-720.jpg)
Few further paint touch ups gone on for seat, stowage area and ensuring glue adherence of interior cockpit side panel to fuselage. Will also dry brush gun turret later too.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/1/2/7/1612127-49836-41-720.jpg)
Adding tail. The reason so many clips - they're adding weight to ensure compliance. I was going to showcase an open bomb bay as per kit option. However I've decided that I'm going for the external fuel tank option - yes, I did decide that before I glued the two halves together - honest! ?
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/4/9/1615449-49836-29-720.jpg)
Wings, stabilizer and turbochargers...
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/5/0/1615450-49836-26-720.jpg)
Really pleasing shape.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/5/9/6/1615596-49836-44-720.jpg)
There's no detail in here, so just concentrating on a decent colour finish. Bomb bay door is one piece, that didn't fit great for me - in retrospect I should have fixed at same time as fuselage. So glued each side and left across two days.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/5/9/7/1615597-49836-24-720.jpg)
I'm not going to display with bomb bay doors open. Decided I'm going to close up.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/5/9/8/1615598-49836-13-720.jpg)
Undercarriage on. I made a tiny mistake here and lost a cut piece to my garage floor. Oops. So used some sprue to gain height again - you won't see it when engines are on, but it's not perfect.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/7/3/1618273-49836-98-720.jpg)
I think I've rescued it! Some touch ups going on.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/8/0/1620780-49836-98-720.jpg)
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/5/6/5/1622565-49836-24-720.jpg)
Bit more smoothing and subsequent rescribing. I really liked the clean green interior. But...
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/5/6/6/1622566-49836-15-720.jpg)
Obviously I decided it needed washes, chipping, panel lining and matt varnish! I can't help myself!
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/5/6/7/1622567-49836-78-720.jpg)
Most of this will be wiped off.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/5/6/8/1622568-49836-20-720.jpg)
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/5/6/9/1622569-49836-49-720.jpg)
This seemed to be just enough pull to ensure tight fit.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/5/7/0/1622570-49836-48-720.jpg)
I think I got most of the exhaust fairings in the right places.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/5/7/9/1622579-49836-28-720.jpg)
Decided I'd add some more weight hoping it won't be a tail sitter.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/3/6/1622736-49836-58-720.jpg)
This is not an accurate grey. But it's also only my base layer, so with some subsequent weathering it will look more worn. I can't decide whether to build the GB version of the US version at the mo.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/4/1/0/1633410-49836-53-720.jpg)
I'm definitely getting better at finishing with a flat surface - so that's improvement!
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/4/1/1/1633411-49836-77-720.jpg)
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/6/8/6/1635686-49836-83-720.jpg)
Stuck some weight in the drop tank too.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/6/8/7/1635687-49836-76-720.jpg)
You can just see some of my shading on the engines...
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/6/8/8/1635688-49836-20-720.jpg)
I've added some post shading, streaking and grime to the unlacquered underside grey. I do this without too much care as I assume that in reality grime would accumulate around certain areas. If you have the option to wipe it away in my opinion it makes me too precise. I do subsequently over spray with the same colour again if required. Before the usual lacquer coat and washes.
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/6/8/9/1635689-49836-20-720.jpg)
Well that used a lot of tape! Must get some Post-It notes!
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/6/9/0/1635690-49836-29-720.jpg)
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/6/9/5/1636695-49836-75-720.jpg)
Vallejo US Olive Drab used.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/6/9/6/1636696-49836-88-720.jpg)
Post-shade of panels. This will be somewhat dulled back. Have also streaked airframe with some 'hairy stick' pulled wash passes.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/4/5/0/1637450-49836-54-720.jpg)
Pretty happy with that for now. Sure I'll screw it up/over do the weathering next!
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/4/5/1/1637451-49836-23-720.jpg)
I'm going to try a new technique for brush painted free-handed camouflage on this one too. The contrasting green is supposed to be 'Dark Green'. I've grabbed a bottle of Hataka Dark Green FS34079 for this purpose. But It isn't contrasting enough in my opinion. So I'll likely repaint this too. You can just see the instructions at base of pic I'm using as reference. I'm steering myself more and more to the Boston rather than the Havoc.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/4/0/6/1651406-49836-66-720.jpg)
So I'm going to lightly hand overpaint with a different green (thinned) that's more akin to the paint instructions and then touch up/roughen the edges final effect with an airbrush. Let's see...

Hi John 🙂 thanks very much for saying such. Very kind. I'm finding it to be a charming kit. It's not at all perfect, but it's such a lovely airframe (it's comparable to building a Mosquito - just a nice shape!) and I like AMT kits also. So enjoying it so far. Would of course love to see you have a crack at it also 👍👍 get to it mate!! 👍👍

I've been itching to do a twin engine prop, so it's between this, the AMT F7F or the A-26 (Monogram).

Sounds like a trend! I think I might have to pull mine out of the stash now…

Looking awesome Neil 👍
I built the Italeri boxing of the B version some years ago... but it didn't survive the move unfortunately

Hi Thomas, thanks very much, you're very kind. 🙂 I've subsequently toned it back a bit too, so it's not quite so pronounced. This was my first pass prior to starting on the contrasting camouflage green.

Hiya James C, thanks! 🙂 That's a shame mate, I'm sure it looked fantastic though 👍 I can't decide whether to go Boston or Havoc. I may go Boston as I'm not sure I can be bothered to mask up a load of invasion stripes again after my P-47 build! Poor excuse I know! 😂

Hehe... I know the feeling 😉👍 although, the Boston has its own gremlins in the form of intricate nose canopy masking 😉

Good advice James, thanks 👍 and great suggestion John 👍🙂 I must admit I'm getting tempted by the Boston at the moment, purely because I seem to build little with RAF markings on, we'll have to see... @Villiers thanks very much and thank you for the likes also mates 👍
