Album info

I built this kit in1985 when it was first released. At the time, it was the only game in town for this unusual subject. The kit is pretty basic and consists of around 16 parts.
Years ago I was a member of the Antique and Classic Section of the Experimental Aircraft Association and we went to the Paul Garber Facility in Washington D. C.,which was where the Smithsonian did the restorations on subjects for the National Air and Space Museum.
The aircraft, as I saw it many years ago was in three parts. The center section was sitting on the floor and the wings were hanging on the wall. It had seen its share of being moved around over the years. The center section was primarily black. I don't know if that was some kind of preservation agent. We were told that in addition to its very small radar cross section it was also painted in carbon impregnated paint to absorb radar waves.
I don't think that they did any restorative work on the plane, and later I had heard that it was given to Grumman Aviation for study. Isn't it amazing that an article of antiquity is still teaching lessons. I, only hope that it is eventually restored and put on display.
When I started to build this kit, I wanted to improve on the base kit, which isn't any problem.
This was what I did;
I added a Preiser pilot figure to the cockpit.
I opened the shell ejection ports on the ventral surface of the wing.
I replaced the molded in wing cannon barrels with metal tubing.
I replaced the pitot tube and kit antennas with ones fabricated wire.
I articulated the nose wheel into a slight left turn.
The model was painted using my Binks single action airbrush and Testors paints, some as supplied by the manufacturer and some mixed. The German Gray Violet was mixed.
I really enjoyed this project and I hope you enjoy it as well.
Thank you for stopping by.
Larry
