Started on the NASA bug. nothing crazy, mostly OOB. Really funny to me how easy things seem going from 1/72 to 1/48..
Looking forward to this one! Have the same kit in my stash😬.
Pit looks awesome Martin!!!
After an extensive work on the intakes, the halves were joined. Lot more putty/sanding to follow🙂
added pictures of sanding, black base, mild preshade and start with paint. there was a lot of sanding needed. the preshade is going to disappear again (consistent with reference pics). Don't know when I'll be able to go back to finish the paint but this seems like a nice quick fun build with no particular challenges. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
thanks Daniel! i try to learn but the shading never shows under the final paint layer. i mean i never had a problem with that before but my Bodenplatte Gustav better step up haha🙂

Hi Martin, I think Oliver actually wants to know how/why you finished the front fuselage sections, including painting and decalling them, before attaching them to the rest of the fuselage. To be honest, that is an interesting question for sure. Did you do it that way to have freedom of movement applying those red fuselage bands?
oh yeah, that would be a valid question too! I opted for that exactly because of the stripes and the surface polishing after that. When I put the nose on the rest of the plane there was some extensive filling and sanding but with some masking tape it was a far easier way to go than painting polishing and decaling around the intakes..
Build complete! Thanks for your presence and encouragement🙂 album here Complete | Album by mnn (1:72)
Both looking great - top !
thank you Oliver!

maybe because albums are called "Scalemates Mig-21 Group Build 2021" and the event "Scalemates Mig-21 GroupBuild"
I have renamed the event, and the albums now appear under it.
The simplest solution would be copy-paste😉
shouldn't there be a little better way to link albums in group builds? seems a little counter intuitive to me🙂 in any case thanks for your help (i believe there were two albums already though - i see only one here. could be wrong). I will post into the feature request as i am quite invested in this now🙂
there is a second album, but it does not appear, true.

uploaded the pics of the aerobonus pilots. They almost look too good for this kit. I glued the canopy closed, masked it and did some sculpting to improve the fit. I also started on the paintjob but covering the black base with all that bright paint is a lot of work so i'm gonna start with white surfacer first. I will try to make the skunk stripe with masking only but I have little faith for this
I will go ahead and call the first attempt at masking the skunk stripe a failure🙂 It was an exploratory attempt anyway so no hard feelings. The surface paint however - a test with the Mission Model paints - really nice!
I ordered some Mission Model paints to play with, but wasn't that thrilled with them as I find them quite thick to spray. They level out beautifully though, but I don't have a felling that I have the finesse I get with highly diluted lacquers.
haha Patrick I came to the same conclusion so I went for some ghetto experimentation and found that few drops of distilled water produce an astonishing result. I am planning to try with IPA which should be even better.
I progressed on the Lutzow as well. No pictures there yet tho
Working on this one together with SMS Lutzow. The railings and rigging still to do. I love how the E8N turned out.
Lovely ship, I like the E8N too! 🙂
I was really curious about how those metal barrels work so I went ahead and installed them. Quite a bit of work but not as bad as I expected. The Flyhawk kit is incredible, I keep looking into the box every day🙂
Nice, particularly the casemate battery gets a massive boost in scale detail! 👍 Poor Lützow took quite a beating, are you by chance going for a Jutland dio?
Not a dio specifically but I will definitely try and complete the I. Aufklarungsgruppe, just waiting for the kits to be made🙂 As for Lutzow, the kit even includes the destroyer which was used by Hipper to switch ships mid battle so they will be side by side but no water base is planned..
So I guess the Lützow will not be depicted in the state when the exchange happened😉
haha I would not have the heart for that Slavo🙂 I am still recovering from cutting into the Hasegawa Tomcat🙂
uploaded some pictures showing the status of this project. I am now finishing my PE effort with rigging to start soon.

As you said, the edges are a bit fuzzy but the modex numbers are crisp.
Nice job on those decals
Going for round two on the decals. the new sheets will hopefully be picked up for printing by a very solid company everybody knows. Each sheet will have two jets on it too, including all the stencils. I am also making the instruction sheet for them.
One modeler is interested for sure! 👍
You have very Nice collection of Cats Martin. Keep going!

Nice weathering and details
added some pics of the painting process, featuring my daughter's art. Cant wait for that high demarcation line. I have also changed the name of the album to take part in the group build.
Great start Martin, it will be a joy to follow this one...! Just finished my Emile...😄
Also wanted to ask: since this is an in flight build, I am reluctant to include the propeller and just fill the nose with something as to not look empty. what do you guys think? any other ideas? thanks!
Great start 👍
The marking masks came out fantastic. Especially considering how troublesome placing them was. On to the decals!
Hi Martin! Welcome to the group build. Considering in flight prop birds; I once sandwiched a clear disk between two spinner parts when I was a teenager. It looked OK back then, but that was before I owned an airbrush. For a planned Mustang build I'm planning on the same, but then add faint blurs with my airbrush. For a FW-190 build I'm thinking of your approach as the propeller is one part with the spinner and riddled with mold shift lines. I want to graft the spinner from plastic tubes and just stick it on. Looking at pictures of those planes in flight, it will just look the part. Just put your spinner on and see if it feels good to you, otherwise an acetate disk might be an idea.
that emil really looks the part. Nice work! looking forward to your formation approach 👍

Hello Martin! thank you for your feedback!. I will upload picture 2 visualization as well to compare but I am leaning for pic 1 as well. Originally, the design was intended for merchant navy so I hope it won't be too wrong on a battleship. Pic 2 seems a little more as a fighting scheme to me..

I finally managed to spray the hangar. With the basic details on the deck complete, I will be able to finally put the two pieces together and seal the deal with the elevator. Looking forward to starting with all the details, the kit looks pretty basic right now.
great. I'm in...
The deck is now on the hull. The details I am adding are mostly inaccurate, sadly. Gotta use up those PE parts. Putting the 1/700 crewmen on will be fun
After going mad several times from gluing the railings, the LSO post, rigging and stern lights are the last details separating me from the last and most anticipated build part. The small crewmen. The tiny metal sailors are overjoyed about hopping aboard their ship soon.
Casting the Trackers/Tracers. Depending on how they go I am thinking of replacing the Greyhounds entirely to have the scene more accurate.
The casting wasn't looking well so I opted for the Greyhounds. I am slowly adding the tiny figures with the tower and the left side of the hull remaining. After that, its only the rigging.
Nice, clean build on your carrier. I like the activity.
One thing, though: I don't think Antietam ever operated with C-2s. Even if she did, she wouldn't have carried more than one or two at a time. Don't forget, they are utility aircraft, only used for COD (not for strike), and not a normal part of the airwing. Carriers typically deployed with a 2-plane detachment from the shore-based squadron.
Thank you Andrew. I know, I just wanted to make the deck super busy and C-2s were the only things I could find in large numbers.. I found out later that there are like 60% of all Greyhounds ever built on that deck.. Oh well.. It looks nice🙂
In that case, let's just pretend that VRC-40 was out in force doing squadron-level carrier refresher training on CV-36! She does look nice.
Haha, yes Andrew. That was my reasoning. A crowded deck ops exercise. Thank you for your kind words.
very nice work on this one.

Lovely! The orange one as well 👍
Came out really nice 👍 Particularly the upper side metal & surface finish has a very good MiG-feeling to it! Your method really worked, good job!
Thank you Łukasz and Slavo. I am very happy about the result myself🙂. The MiGs look nice together too. Next one will be dark and camouflaged 8208 fresh from repairs at Dresden
I agree with Lukasz and Slavo.
Well then I thank you too Neuling!

Thank you Lukasz and Alexander. Can't wait to see the results of this technique on your Tu-128 Alex!
No, now I have to come up with something else 😄
Came out really nice, will definitely keep this in mind when I stumble about into a NMF-story... 👍 looking forward to the finale 🙂
Finishing up here and I really love the look. Gonna put it on its own legs today, add the small detail and maybe some varnish work as well to seal some of the decals.

Watching with interest.
I built the initial realease of the kit:
Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 (Airfix A01008, 1:72)
IMHO a great kit for the price.
Hello Roland! I would wholeheartedly agree but two things were very annoying. The clear canopy parts are quite bad with varying thickness, broken detail and bad fit, and some deep panel lines I had to fill to appear more realistic. The price is very inviting though.
As Emil is my favourite 109, I wanted to basically do an inflight formation in Airfix 1/72 109s but in the end I decided for a pair of Eduard kits instead.
I wish they made a 1/72 Emil on Eduard/Tamiya level of quality but all we have are Gustavs haha. Maybe in the future. I do not have much faith in the AZ upcoming Emil
nearing completion. have to add the small parts and i lost the tailwheel somewhere. gonna mount it on a stick in a small block of wood.
