Yamato 1945 (WIP)
Moving ahead - a lot of screws are required, I hope I chose the correct ones, instructions are not very clear on that
Careful clamping is needed, to ensure a tight fit throughout
Fit is not perfect at all
Starting to glue some MK1 PE - I’m starting to believe I will not use a very large part of the set…
Painting the interiors flat black
Rear deck ready with the kit's PE
The little boats have nasty ejector marks - I'll leave them as they are, I expect them to go unnoticed...
The boats are in place
Upper rear deck closed
Upper rear deck closed
MK1 PE is maybe a little too much... oh well, I'll use these parts
I think MK1 exaggerates in the "smallness" of some details 🙁
The support structures of this side are finished... what a chore!
Busy workbench
The other side finished
Now, to address these nasty seams
Tamiya putty + Mr Surfacer 500 and Vallejo putty: all are put to use!
Testing diluted oils on the MK1 balsa deck
Result so far
Round two, after AK Primer, with more Mr Surfacer 500
Fit here is also... well... not perfect
Don’t know how I’ll be able to glue parts C3X from the MK1 set - it’s not realistic to work with such small parts 🙁
(...)
Mini "rail thing" from the MK1 set applied 🙁 .... this is going to take forever...
Ultra Glue to the rescue!!! ?
One ready, two more to go…
One ready, two more to go…
Main turrets are almost ready
Glueing the degaussing cable from the MK1 set all around the ship
MK1's degaussing cable all glued up - what a chore!
Added the white metal sand bags to the turrets
Main turrets build phase is finished
Some additional work on the rear deck
No pain, no gain
Goodies for the ship! ?
Because I wanted to restore some height to the boards that were sanded to hide the huge gap in the hull
Some heavy passes with grey AK Microfiller primer (AK 758)
Not good, not bad, quite the contrary! 🙂
Preshading
Preshading
Preshading

Preshading
First color to go down: Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red (should be called Hull Brown)
Some highlights with Gunze H33 Russet
Overall Gunze H33 mist
Color so far; too brown?
Color so far; too brown?
Starting to build the “tower thing”
Progress on the tower
Progress on the tower
Starting another part of the tower
A few more hours of glueing photoetch, still not finished
Adding XF-57 Buff to the bottom of the hull
Adding XF-57 Buff to the bottom of the hull
Adding XF-57 Buff to the bottom of the hull
Colors applied to the hull
Metal propeller rods cleaned with lacquer thinner
Top gray applied (XF-75), trying not to hide all the pre-shading
Glueing the wooden deck with Ammo Ultra Glue
Main deck ready for the oils
Oils applied
The brown stripes and the machine gun cover are not decals, they are stickers!!! Come on Tamiya!!!
Managed to lose a rail from one of the towers…
…so I decided to order a set with spare rails.
After stopping for 3 months, I’m restarting this build
Applied the broken number scale with an additional decal set I had to acquire from Tamiya, because I managed to damage the original one
Dry fitting the Voyager Model rail to replace the one from MK1 that I lost during the painting phase... looks like it will have to do
A bit of photoetch to deal with...
Preparing the round “things”; painted with Vallejo Model Air 71.045 instead of XF-55
Some of the “round things” glued in place… this takes time…
Painting the MK1 sand bags with AK 2292 Clear Doped Linen Ver 2 from the WWI for airplanes AK 2290 set
Hull is basically done; all work now will be turrets and central superstructure
Hull is basically done; all work now will be turrets and central superstructure
Chimney top part finished, using MK1 PE instead of Tamiya PE, because it has the additional internal stairs detail
A few bits more on the central superstructure
Finished glueing all the PE in the funnel
Primer applied (Mr. Surfacer 1500 diluted with MLT)
All PE applied and primed
Joining the funnel to the center superstructure
Painting the interior of the projectors chrome
More PE, always more PE!!!...
Preparing some AA guns
More PE work
Photoetch stairs applied to the mast; I did not use the metal masts from the MK1 because the plastic one from the kit are extremely thin and fit perfectly
Starting some necessary rigging in the central superstructure using Ushi’s .01 line
Restarting, after one month of refreshing holidays
Anchors places and chains fixed with some tiny drops of CA glue
Varnishing with Hataka satin varnish (XP08) to disguise the decals which are really bad
Ultra matte varnish from AK applied on the top of the funnel
Central superstructure screwd (only one screw) and glued in place
The kit screws did not work with the lateral structures, had to source new ones from a hardware store
Lateral parts of the central superstructure screwed in place
The MK1 set barrels for the secondary gun turrets are beautiful; however, I will not use them because I do not have an effective and quick way to cut and drill the plastic parts and ensure that the metal barrels will be perfectly parallel to each other
Secondary turret n.o 1
Secondary turret n.o 1
Secondary turret n.o 4
More tiny bits: cranes, catapults and turrets
Unshielded gun ready, washed, drybrushed and varnished
Shielded gun ready, washed, drybrushed and varnished
Catapults ready, washed, drybrushed and varnished
Crane ready, washed, drybrushed and varnished
Detail of rear assembly
Detail of main central gun assembly
Secondary turret is ready
Secondary turret is ready
Single mount machine gun with 2 PE parts from the MK1 set
Triple AA gun with 2 PE parts from the MK1 set... had to assemble 24 of these
Applying the stickers - these are very annoying, because they have to be cut individually and there are dozens
Preparing more guns with MK1 PE
Progress so far; almost finished; missing the plane and the rigging, intermixed with the positioning of several turrets, directors and projectors
Received the updated anatomy of the ship. Why only now? I need sources to help me with the rigging and Stefan Draminski seems to have discovered the correct way to do it. The rigging is not perfectly described, but it's the best source I know.
Two tiny planes: only the one on the left will be used, according to the "Anatomy of the Ship" the other one was not used in the Yamato; decals are terrible
Starting to do the rigging
Rigging
Rigging
Rigging
Rear flag up
Front flag up
And that's a wrap! This one in finished. Not completely happy with the end result, mostly because of the terrible decals, extremely visible in the hull, with a lot of silvering on the rear one. Anyway, finished model photos can be seen here -> Yamato 1945 | Album by RReis (1:350)

Thank you @David; it's a lot of work, the makers of the PE sets always assume that PE bends like paper... but it does not; I question myself if it is worth the time spent of roughly 6 hours instead of less than 5 minutes to glue the corresponding plastic parts; I have already assumed that I will not use a significant part of the PE that comes with the MK1 set; well, it's done, moving on!

I sometimes put the P E on a hot plate to soften it up to make it more pliable if it's a help.

I heard about annealing with fire, but I never tried, I'm always afraid to ruin it; the brass coloured PE is tough but the silver one is really, really hard!!!

That is interesting. I will be following this build.
Hmm... Tamiya has a reputation for making great kits. Exceptions confirm the rule.
As for the PE. Why not try annealing a piece you're sure you won't use?
I know that working with such small parts can be difficult. But the result is certainly visible. Good luck building and struggling with the PE 😉

Thank you @Lex; these parts are not the rails, these seat in front of the rails that will still be added, afterwards; so, as you can imagine, they are extremely small; annealing will not help, because I don't need them flexible, quite the contrary; I'll try next with Ultra Glue from Ammo, which is a type of PVA glue, it may work better...

Hi Ricardo, As I have her sister in the stash, I'd like to take a seat.
Nitpicking: the mooring cable in pic 38 is actually a degaussing cable, to counter the ship's magnetism.

Thank you @Clair, for sure you are not that bad and I am not that good - I did discover that, used in small quantities, the Ultra Glue (PVA based) works really well, and it can be cleaned with water if you need to restart; Thanks @Lex, yes, I think you have to concentrate and lower your heartbeat and the work starts to flow... I just have to remember to breathe, because the chest begins to feel heavy after a while 😄

Hey Ricardo...reference photo 65 comment about 'stickers'. I was surprised by the stickers that came in this Fujimi set...
There is a wood deck sticker for each flattop but I think for a good result one would get a proper wood deck for such nice kit.

LOL; not so much, @bughunter, they are many but you do feel linear progress as you assemble them; I'm pausing it for a few months, but if I had kept the pace I believe this could done in about 6 months, including the PE parts, which take a lot of time

Thank you @bughunter; according to the book "Yamato Class Battleships" from Steve Wiper, "both Yamato and Musashi had their main decks painted a very dark grey; the tinting for this paint was the soot from their funnels"; the pics from April 1945 seem to show the deck still very dark, so... I went with a dark color! 🙂

Thank you @bossy122, I only lost one PE rail so far, from a gun turret - it must have been blown by my airbrush; must confess I have had a huge help from Ultra Glue, from Ammo; at first it looks like regular PVA white glue, but it dries very fast, it is incredibly strong and, on top, it shrinks when it dries! Very nice indeed, I almost did not use CA at all so far! 🙂
