Su-57 "The President" (WIP)
Starting
A little squeeze, to eliminate lateral gaps in the long bottom part
These lines do not exist, at least not on Blue 511, so putty time is on!
Cockpit blue painted with MRP-195 “Sukhoi Cockpit Blue-Grey”
Color match between MRP-195 and Quinta’s set is perfect
Closing the panel and scribing the missing panels
Decision of colors........
I rather like the combination of MRP-133 and MRP-296; the more photos I see the less sure I am... should I, maybe, just choose the color I like best?...
Although all the surface is grainy, in some points it becomes ridiculous…

Cockpit in place
Added some weight to the nose: better safe than sorry!
Glueing the intakes
Closing
Closing the rear part of the fuselage
Sanding the face of the engine holes: closest is sanded, the one in the back will still be sanded; if I don’t do this, the engine nozzles will not fit
Engine nozzles will also have to be sanded in the ring that connects them to the fuselage
Nozzles sanded; if I don’t do this, the engine nozzles will not fit the fuselage engine holes
Masking canopy and HUD parts
Dry fitting the main landing gear; very sturdy
Working on the bits
Ready for the windshield
Windshield glue in place with Tamiya Extra Thin cement
Windshield glued, moving on
Some nasty gaps - used Plastic Perfect Putty and cotton swab dipped in waper and I'll waste no more time
Despite all care, some nasty gaps and asymmetry persist - will have use Perfect Plastic Putty again
First color applied
First colors applied
Still not sure about the colors........
I think maybe MRP-136 is the one! Maybe... 🙂
Masking for the interior blue (MRP-195)
Interior blue (MRP-195) applied
Applied Gunze C308 to the top panels of the tails
Putting the New Ware masks to good use, painting the side panels with Gunze C308
New Ware masks proving they are worth their price, painting the first digital patterns on the tails with MRP-136
First digital patterns on the tails with MRP-136 over MRP-296
Vertical tails are done
Landing gear
Top of the fins corrected with Gunze C308
Over one hour of masking
Paint applied
Camouflage done, minor touch ups to make
Slight color change on these two panels, as per reference photos
Adding the metallic plates with Evergreen plastic sheet
Plates painted blue, will be aluminium
The exhausts turned out awful; will have to darken them substantially……
Too dark now!!! 🙁
Definitely too dark 🙁
Addding lighter tones with AK Xtreme Burnt Metal
I think it’s better now
Top side with corrections
Now for the tubes…
Some oils to use
Exhaust tubes with oils applied
Exhaust tubes with oils applied
Dirtying with Tamiya X-19 Smoke
Tamiya Smoke applied over the black oils
Varnished and decaled
Decals applied over X-22: very thin and prone to bend out of alignment but, fortunately, very strong
Once dry, decals almost disappear
Painting the lights base with aluminium
Painting canopy seal
Touch ups on the cockpit
Last minute putty
Wheels up (or down...)
Finished!!!

Ricardo, imagine this same grainy surface on the 72nd edition of this kit. I took a closeup of the wing and it looked, well, hideous!!!

Yes, the plane is very nice, although I got some nasty gaps on the fuselage joint on some point - not sure if it's the kit or if it was me...

I think it is the kit. I built the 1:72 scale version from Zvezda and faced pretty much the problems you did.

Thanks mates; @WhiteGlint, thank you for you feedback - always comforting to know it probably wasn't my bad modeling that caused the bad alignment! 🙂

It's the kit... As WhiteGlint, I am working on the 72nd kit, whose basic engineering was used in 48th scale kit and I see the same problems. My intakes look hideous so I will just finish it without much of a fuss.

Yes, a lot of Perfect Plastic Putty to remedy this; the fuselage (front to wings comparison) is also a little crooked, but only I can see it! 🙂

Thank you @WhiteGlint - the dirty part will come after, with some restrained weathering made with oils

Nice! I've been inveterate in this kit for a while. How is it to work on?

Thanks. It has some fitting problems between upper and lower halves; apart from that, it's ok, although not very accurate: a lot of missing panels and venting grid due to over-simplification; for example, the grids below the intakes are decals!
