My Childhood Builds

Album image #1
These are two of the three first model kits that I ever built, somewhere around the age of 6. They are both Matchbox kits. Originally they were left in plain plastic, and were painted odd colours when I was about 9

Album image #2
Matchbox Lightning. I have no Idea exactly which model was the first that I built, but it was either a lightning, a Starfighter or a Sepecat Jaguar

Album image #3
Note the innovative positioning of the Missiles, who says Pilots can't duck when they fire

Album image #4
Because we all know the RAF flew gloss black F-104s

Album image #5
A selection of 1/16th kits from the 70s & 80s. Those are Revell Jeep Renegades, Two relatives had the same idea for Christmas one year.

Album image #6
The Cobra is the MPC release from the mid eighties, The Mustang is the odd one with the steel axle through the engine

Album image #7
MPC Firebird

Album image #8
Was so tempted to spray this with some fixative and put it in a Barn Diorama

Album image #9
A quick scrub up under the bathroom tap with an old toothbrush, the Barnfind is shiney now. Built in the 80s

No, I'm not building a Model Scrapyard, this is my collection of teen years 1/24 cars

Album image #14
They haven't done too bad for 23 years in the loft after 10 years on the shelf

Album image #15
Lots of Revell and some AMT / MPC and Tamiya

Album image #16
Bootlegger was one of the few that was spray painted, as I had some left from the 1/16 Cobra. It's held up pretty well.

Album image #17
My poor XJR9, looked so great when originally finished, sadly didn't know about sealing decals.

Album image #18
This I call the "What was I thinking collection" I have decided that I will restore these oddities with proper materials and skills to create what I was intending to all those years ago.

Album image #19
Race car & Transporter. The load bed is a couple of old cassette boxes (remember those?)

Album image #20
More cassette box to convert a Dodge Sidewinder fastback to a Triumph sedan. (Love that filler work)

Album image #21
Because at 15 years old, old sprue makes the perfect substitute for realistic chassis rails. Love the masking job on the Transit

Album image #22
Mercury Carpi convertible conversion (Hood, what hood)

Album image #23
80's Mustang Cobra CHP car (one of the wheels was replaced from a Tamiya Pink Panther Land rover, because that's close 😉)

Album image #24
Mustang Pickup???

Album image #25
Because we know Mclaren once raced Cadillac Town Cars Leopardskin seats, mmmmm

Album image #26
Mk3 Escort convertible conversion (another hood gone walkabout)

Auspicious day today, I have received delivery of a long sought after kit that is quite special to me. I have a lot of very special kits in my stash, mainly the Tamiya kits that I have bought because my Dad originally Built them in the 1970s, and over the years those fell apart, and got lost in moves. Now I have them to build again myself. But this one is different, the Turbo Mustang with Wetbikes is the First Car Kit I ever built, at the age of 9. I even remember my Mum buying it for me in the Model Shop that we had just found.

I've been keeping an eye out on ebay for one in the UK for the last 3 years. This one just came up last weekend. It's an original 1979 Kit (I believe there was only ever the one run) still in the factory shrink wrap.

It's not even that good a kit, the details are poor and the fit can best be described as "1970s" But it's special, and a rare subject, and hopefully I'm going to do a massively upgraded build detail wise.

The 2 x Burago Capri's are some of the only cars I've previously owned that can be got in 1/24 (plenty in 1/43 & 1/64). These will be stripped, converted and rebuilt as My two Mk3 Capris.

Finally - After 4 years searching eBay, bidding unsuccessfully on the three or 4 that came up, even built ones, I have received the last of my replacement kits of those that I built all those years ago. (I am not near brave enough to try building a matchbox 1/72 aircraft to an acceptable standard). It's not quite the same, it's the later shelby with a hood scoop, but that's not relevant.

Brilliant. My brother built the Mustang at an early age. I owned a MK2 Capri for a number of years, it spent more time off the road than on it !!

Enjoy, I've built several of my childhood builds again, and have a few more in my stash. I find it to be a lot of fun!

Brilliant score Chaz!
What you've described there is my whole reason for kit building, revisiting my childhood memories 👍

I'd love to do that but I gave all my earlier builds away as I got into 1/87 scale. To think I had a Johan Heavenly Hearse, 1 20 Ford custom van, 1 16 General Lee...

Still a few to find that stand out, 1/12 Revell Mustang Fastback, 1/16 Revell Jeep Renegade, 1/24 Revell Midnite Cowboy.

I've already completed an MPC R2-D2 and an MPC Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, both from the original run that I built back in the 70s, and I have a pile of MPC & AMT 1/48 X-wings to do.

I've decided that the cost and scarcity of the original Matchbox Aircraft that I built back then is just too much pain to go through for the minimal detail, and they are all available in new modern toolings, so I'll do the modern ones by way of an update, and I'll pick one actual matchbox and see what I can do with it.

Pictures 22, 23 and 24 are what happened to my first three car Builds from 1979, which were the Turbo Mustang & wetbikes I just got, The Turbo Cobra from the same tool, and the Turbo Capri which was the same kit with a different Nose, Tail and Hood. I actually have a nearly complete Turbo Cobra kit I got earlier this year, but was missing a few bits. I can now make a cast of those missing parts and complete that one too.

I know that when I repainted the three for about the third time, bits got swapped around, so until I strip the paint I couldn't tell anyone which one was the original. they were molded in White, Orange and Silver respectively.

This album is so cool. My heart beats for the two ~82 Firebirds and the ~82 Camaro 🙂

I just managed to get the Prestige movers kit, untouched, but missing a couple of the bags. The Firebird and Camaro are complete. I'm missing the trailer wheels and I think one of the chrome sprues from the tractor. I have most of the parts available to cast replacements.

Still on the lookout for a 1/16 82 firebird at a reasonable price.

I sold my 1/16 some years ago. All of them.

What sprue do you need? Maybe I can help out.
Do you miss the complete wheels or only rims / rubber?

Chaz, I think Bozzer knew of a 1/16 4th Gen Firebird😉

Before the Mustang & Wetbikes, I had no interest in Car models at all. Something about this one completely captured my imagination. I think it was probably the outstanding box picture, I don't know why Revell didn't use this style more. This kit, along with the Mustang Cobra and the Capri from the same mould, were favourites of mine for many years. These three kits got built, rebuilt, repainted, swapped around and modified so many times over the years. They are in pretty shabby shape now. BUT, now that I have 1 Complete (the wetbike combo) and one almost complete, unbuilt kits, I can take some casts and make resin parts replacements to restore all of them. Fortunately, I have all of the unique parts for the Capri, as this is variant is near impossible to find now.

All hail - The 1/12 scale Revell Mustang - Complete and un-built - has finally been located, purchased and delivered. for only 20 times what I paid for the original in a Maynards newsagent in 1980

Bozzer, I'm pretty much all sorted now, I wouldn't mind finding a 1:16 Revell jeep, but otherwise I'm been rather successful in acquiring unbuilt old kits. I have the 1:8 Jag e type on pre-order, which is a part built one I have in the loft from the first release, that sadly has deteriorated to the point it's probably not salvagable.

I have also discovered 3D printing, so the kits I have will be seeing upgrades galore, calculated that I have enough stash to keep me busy for the rest of my life, even if I retired tomorrow.

Bob, I have enough 'stangs. I even have a spare 1:12 2010, and enough body parts from my original 1:12 Shelby 350 to do something quite special.

Pretty cool, to get a flashback into the childhood. My dad was the trigger to get us (my brother and me) to model kits. I did the same like you did: looking for that special kit, which brought me to that hobby and I remember my first three kits easily:
- Piper Cherokee (Piper Cherokee 140 (Revell H-4112, 1:48))
- Bo 150 (Bo 105 M (VBH) (Revell 4432, 1:32))
- 1982 Camaro ('82 Camaro Z-28 (Revell 7216, 1:25))
Only the Bo105 is missing. The other two still existing in my mans cave. Nevertheless, I have all three kits in my stash 🙂 I remember well, that the Camaro cost 19,50 DM those days. When I bought the 1982 Pontiac Firebird by Revell (Pontiac Firebird (Revell 7215, 1:25)), it was a little more expensive: 22,50 Euro. My first Truck was that Scania Roadrunner (Scania T142M Roadrunner (Italeri 780, 1:24)) - it sits in my shelf too 🙂

btw: that Capri is awesome. Never looked about this cool car. Somehow I can remember a silver one with black viyl roof on it for sale. My brother and I wanted to get this. I don't know, why that didn't work out.

Album info

Some of the many model kits I built as a Kid.

Some are completely intact, others in varying states of missing parts or Odd conversions.

Some have been restored & rebuilt more than once. Most of these are restorable and will be queued to be restored over the next few years alongside new builds.
