Well it is time to come back to ship modelling. Trumpeters brand new HMS Calcutta recently arrived and I am really impressed by the layout and outcome of the kit, so I decided emidiately to start working on it. I will build her as HMS Cairo in a three tone camouflage pattern in her late 1941 livery. Sligthly modifications are neccessary but easy to do. Weapons, boats, radars etc. will be replaced by Micro Master, Black Cat Models and Nort Star Models accessories, the masts and some minor parts will be made of scratch.

@Patrick, yes and one Vickers was made of 1 resin part and 11 PE parts. First I thought to replace the Vickers with a Micro Master part, but I still have some North Star accessories and why not to spend some time working with these tiny parts😄

@Urban, yes the quality is excellent and only two parts to handle.

Seems to me 3D printing in high quality resin printing is the future. It is much more easier to handle instead of building these small accessories from different resind and PE parts.

I nearly finished the bridge during the weekend. I replaced all searchlights, binoculars, range finder, fire control etc. by accessories from North Star and Black Cat Models. The bulwarks were all cutted of and replaced by railings coverred with PVA glue to represent the canvas cover.

Yep, I tangled a lot with scale 1/72 aeroplane and AFV. But starting a ship model, it gave me back my main passion on model making🙂

Some more update. A structure made of styrene was added inside of the funnels and the modified platform aft of the bridge was removed and replaced by a new shelter. A simillar but smaller one found its place in between both funnels.
According to reference photos these shelters were there in late 1941. I assume the shelters were fitted in June 1940 or Fabruary 1941 when she got here Typ271 and Type 285 radar. The radar technique and generators etc. may were placed in the forward one, and the radar office in the smaller one aft.

Anyhow, it comes much closer now to the references, even there are some open questions and gueeswork in the main outcom. But I am really happy with the result so far🙂

Haha Roland, duno if Cairo has been incredible, but thank you for your kind comment. But the praise should go to the designer and manufacturer, because everything went togehter perfectly. The rest is good magnifiying glasses and patience🙂

@Norbert, one of a dozen. Hope I will bring this to an end before I start another one 😄

The last details added before the paintwork can start. I tried a new technique using Magic Sculp to make 50 individual splinter matting for the bridge rail protection.

Excellent stuff - just dicovered this - comparing the first shot with the last few, where the basic model is covered in all kinds of good stuff so that the original plastic is barely visible really tells the story 🙂 👍

Splinter matting looks great as does the rest of the Cairo

Gentleman, thank you very much for your kind comments🙂

Well Slavo, there was to less shine on the plastic, so I had to add a bit of brass 😄

Meanwhile I got the Mk1 Design RN Radar Set so I could finish the fore and main mast with the Type 279 radar antennas.
