Mig-21R (94R)

Parts from KP MiG-21R set - used because Eduard do not released set with this version in 1/72 scale.

Something managed to carve. It's not great, but the plastic is some very soft.... I tried to correct some of the lines and immediately carved the canyons. I sealed with CA and decided not to try more. I added a flare tray and that was it.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/8/0/9/1475809-37811-58-720.jpg)
I adjusted the tray to the curves of Eduard's fuselage - for now on Blue Tac, but it seems to fit quite well 🙂

A plan to "transplant" the cockpit from the MiG-21PFM to the MiG-21R (MiG-21MF).

Progress has been slow lately, but sometimes you have to work 🙂
Today just a quick look at the nozzles. On the MiG-21MF, I added something from myself to the exhaust nozzles in order to make them more like the original and not to make money for Eduard on the aftermarkets 😛 . This time I decided to go a step further - instead of 0.5mm PVC single row "big teeth" I make two rows of 0.2mm PVC " thinner teeth". The effect is so satisfactory that I am thinking about copying it in resin, because
after all, the "R" is not to be the last version I plan to glue 🙂

Looking for a colour 😉 "Ashy" - I think that 1 drop of black in 1 hundred of white this is it 😉 (compared to light grey MiG-21MF-75 with white rocket)

Good job so far, really love the look of your exhaust. Can't see a reason why Eduard skipped R, SMT and bis in 1:72

Sebastian - I have no idea why either. It seems that bis would be the easiest (tail and cockpit to change). R is more complicated: pod, new wings (SPO-3 antennas on the ends) \and cockpit from PFM. That requires adding a frame with gray parts and a frame with glazing from PFM.... Probably someone counted it and gave up.... I'm starting to think about an bis involving a combination of Zvezda (hump and cockpit) and MF from Eduard. Maybe this is an idea for a quite good model?

I absolutely have to be there. I have the same idea of converting a 1/72 Mig-21 to R. I already have recon pod and decals for this.Tthanks to your project i have to realize that i bought the "wrong" basic model of the Mig-21 (just studied books again) because my previous of knowledge assumed an PMF as the basis. However, it has the wrong smaller back tank. I think changing this is harder than the cockpit of an MF..

Shar - not only back tank. PFMs have single pair of pylons but Rs have two (outer ones for tanks). So MF kit (Interceptor!) from Eduard is a better start-set 😉

@Konrad: Great work so far! 👍👍👍
Yes, I am convinced of that. I have rummaged through my available sources of information. According to my information, the following can be summarized for the conversion:
- Basic kit: Mig-21 MF to get the large back tank and the four wing pylons.
- Cockpit: Mig-21 PMF
- Engine: Mig-21 PMF Turbojet Tumanski R-11F2S-300 with the older fan-like flame holder. The Turbojet Tumanski R13-300 of the MFs (*) are equipped with a ring-shaped flame holder. I think the kit from eduard contains both variants.
- Additional the SPO-3R (radar warning receiver) in the round containers on the wing tips)
- Reconnaissance tanks in the fuselage pylons (were four different ones, tank A, B, C and D)
- During the course of production, the R was given an autopilot (and a flight data recorder), among other things, recognizable by the angle of attack sensor on the front left side of the fuselage.
Did I forgot something?
I ordered the more suitable basic MF kit (the kit without etched parts) today. plus the PEs with the PMF cockpit and the engine set of the PMF. I already have the reconnaissance container.
I'm still thinking about how or where I can get or implement the radar warning receiver in the wing tips. I don't really want to buy a kit because of them, let alone loot them.
(*) However, some machines for poland were also delivered with the older Tumanski R-11F2S-300.

Shar - You're right: Polish MiG-21MFs were equipped with a weaker R-11F2S-300 engine for unification with the MiG-21Ms purchased earlier. Was that the real reason or was it to save money - who knows? Eduard kit contains both variants of flame holders 🙂
Wing tips - if you have a pod just scratch them 🙂 It looks like easy job (and believe me - KP's onces are not sophisticated...)
Polish R's had an attack sensor on the left side and short additional Pitot tube. Main Pitot tube had no wings on it (it was common for all R's I believe) . Canopy had a pilot's rearview mirror.

Great info and great build. Did you Eduard stencils or source Polish ones?

Album info
Game plan:
- base: Eduard MiG-21MF Interceptor (due to lack of sight holes on the upper surfaces of the wings);
- cockpit: Eduard MiG-21PFM
- R version specific parts: KP MiG-21R (or any set with this same frames)
