A look back to 2023

Album image #1
F-104G Starfighter
This machine was used as a template for the construction of my model used as a wall decoration.

I used the optical effect of mirroring to build this model. I built only half of the plane and mounted it on a wooden board with mirror film glued on. The other half of the plane is just the image in the mirror.

Focke Achgelis FA -223 Drache

I originally wanted to build this model from the box only. But when I took a good look at the kit parts and compared them with the drawings and photos of the real machine, I decided to modify the kit more and add the missing details.

I had to solve a problem with balancing the model. Because the chassis has the front wheel and main landing gear wheels positioned well forward and there is not much room for ballast in the richly glazed nose, I had to add additional ballast disguised as cargo boxes to the cargo bay.

Also for balance reasons I replaced the original horizontal tail surface made of plastic with a new one made of paper.

On the tubular structure supporting the rotors of the helicopter I added the missing struts, reinforcing steel cables and cables for rotor control.

Fokker D.VII

The most challenging part of this model was working with the decals. Because the whole machine is camouflaged with lozenge, the decals had to be applied on the whole surface of the machine Fokker D.VII

Mi-24D

This is my most challenging model built in 2023. It is a rebuild of the old Monogram kit with extensive modification of almost all parts of the kit and production of many other parts.

Zetor Z25

At the end of the year I decided to build this tractor. It's a full scale kit that included small Pe parts and 3D printed parts. So the model is built out of the box with no further modifications - they weren't needed.

What a great way to display a jet in flight, love these creative ideas.

I definitely share your appreciation for older models. Was definitely fun to see how you took the time to add a lot of quality detail to your builds. Cheers and happy new year!

Btw, I just happened to watch this fun video about the Fokker D.VII today (your photo #11).
It made me wonder if maybe I am too stupid to fly even a WW1 plane, with all those levers and instruments in the canopy. 😄

šta'stný nový rok, Ludvík! Your projects are truly inspirational, and it has been a joy to watch your scratch building bring these projects to life 🙂 All the best for 2024.

That paint scheme on the Fokker looks so crisp! Very well done. How'd you get it so clean?

Treehugger, thanks for the interesting video on Fokker. The video contains a lot of interesting information. I was intrigued by the explanation of the machine gun's synchronization feature.

I can't judge your ability to pilot the aircraft. It has never been so easy. It also depends on how you judge the whole thing. Compared to today's military aircraft, piloting a Fokker was a trivial matter.

Alex Dovzhanyn, I used decals to "paint" the lozenges. Detailed information (not only about working with lozenge decals) can be found here: Fokker D.VII, Czechoslovak Air Force, WIP | Album by KLuK (1:48).

Album info

I consider the past year 2023 a success from a model perspective. I managed to complete five interesting models. Four models expanded my collection of Czechoslovak Air Force machines. And one model was created as an unconventional alternative to the possibility of building an interesting decoration out of a model.

I like old models that give me a lot of room for modification. On the other hand, they require a lot of time to complete. That's why I consider five finished models in one year a good result.
