Thank you! In the meantime she is primed and the bottom is finished in RLM 76 - with such a subtle preshading that it's hardly evident in the picture.

Hi Thomas, what kind of primer do you use, Vallejo primer 73.601? I noticed you masked the canopy before you have started painting the primer. In my experiebce the Vallejo acrylics will fray once you demask the canopy. Will you cut carefully along the canopy frame?
TIA
Cheers, Christian

@Eugen; welcome and have a seat!
@Christian: now as you mention it - I should not have primed the canopy 🙁 .It's not that bad as I have used also the inside masks and painted RLM 66. I do use indeed 73.601 and as I usually not prime the canopy I have never noticed any issues with it. Thanks for the warning - I will take care when demasking.
Good and bad news: I found with Lifecolor UA510 the perfect match to the RLM81 paint chip in the Monogram Painting Guide. unfortunately I could not make the colour work - it sputtered and had interruptions in the air flow. Will try now to mix something with Vallejo.

Hi Thomas, ah ok. Please keep me informed how it works!

What was your experience with the polyurethan primer? I have not the best experience, because the surface was to rough or the paint does not stick to the surface. I now use AK Interactive primer. This primer works perfect to me. I just have to check if it will corospond to Velljos, but why not!?

For RLM81, try Vallejo 71.043 Olive Drab.

Cheers, Christian

Thomas did You try Model Master 81/82/83 enamels...I think they are best RLM shades
22 April 2017, 18:41
Thomas Bischoff
@Christian: 71.043 is a perfect fit to the Me 262 paint chart - I used it on the "White 3" but for the Do 335 it is too brown
@Dejan: I used Modelmaster years ago and they are the best colours I know but I will not switch back to enamels. Not after having worked with the Vallejo acrylics: no smell, easy cleaning, fast drying ...

I love Vallejo too but their color shades are lets just say suspicious

sometimes yes - I always use a paint mule to test the shades. For this project I use an Airfix Me 109 ...
22 April 2017, 19:29
Thomas Bischoff
I uploaded a picture of the paint mule - the Lifecolor is a perfect match for my desired RLM 81 shade and the Vallejos 043 and 264 are too brown (but perfect for a Me 262 or Me 163).
You also see the sputters of the Lifecolor paint.

Nice progress so far Thomas 👍

Thank you Stephan - the picture hides that the paint was too old.. I had to apply a denser layer of paint than desired and will have to (try to) fix tomorrow as the green is a tad too dark.
The good news is that I seem to have found a matching paint for the darker green RLM 81. I will use Vallejo 71.015 on top of 71.022

Interesting masking technique and a very nice and clean paintwork 👍

thanks for all your feedback - it took me a very long time to finish as I screwed up the paint job. The glosscoat before decalling and weathering went wrong (kind of) and it took me some time to fix it.
A comment to the "missing" rear prop spinner: pictures of the real aircraft in storage shows it missing so I left it out also but did not care to reshape to match the real thing - it's not miles off as it is now.

Excellent work and overall finish Thomas 👍
I much like the different shiny surfaces, the top of the wings in high gloss with the reflection from the fuselage stars and bars. Very very nice!

Thank you all for your nice comments!
@playtime all markings were painted using masks from Montex (German) and Gator's (US) but I will never use Gator's masks again on Vallejo - they spoil the gloss coat!

Hi Thomas, I missed something smooth, very nice Do 335, and what I think is great, finally a proof that the engine in front in camouflage color can have 👍, as I've shown my 102, was of all Seiten claims that they have to get an alu bug .... very nice to look at and painted as prey perfectly 👍 👍 👍 👍

Thanks Jens - this early Do 335 was definitely perfectly coated - the German paints were obviously even better than the fading US markings 🙂

Album info

This is WerkNr. 240102 which was shipped after the war on HMS Reaper to the US there it was handed over to the Navy for testing at Patuxent river. It was afterwards stored at NAS Norfolk before sent to Germany in 1975 for restoration at the Dornier plant in Oberpfaffenhofen.

Painting will be
RLM76 Light Blue: Vallejo 71046

RLM82 Light Green: Vallejo 71022 plus second coat 50:50 71022 and 71095 with 10% white

RLM81 Dark Green: Vallejo 71011 thinned and sprayed of the RLM82 coat

Oversprayed German Marking: Vallejo 071.050 Neutral Grey and 71.043 Olive Drab

This matches quite nicely the colour chips in the Official Monogram Painting Guide on Page 37 which themselves were designed after paint samples from the original aircraft!
