Impreza WRC '99 (WIP)
First coat of paint, with decanted Tamiya TS-50 Mica Blue, applied by airbrush
Masking is a REAL PAIN!
First color applied, fingerprint also applied, will have to correct later
Inching forward, a lot of small paint and details...
Some small parts ready
Putty... my least preferred part of modelling
Priming the wheels with AK 471 Black Base before the gold paint
Preparing the aluminium protection of the chassis
Protection applied
Wheels are ready
Exhaust pipe ready
A whole lot of small parts, ready
Work, so far
Applying the carbon fiber decals on the back of the seats - they look menacing at this stage
Micro Sol is starting to make it's magic
Decals are almost perfectly fitted to the seats; I also used Mark Fit Super Strong after they were completely settled, very resilient decals indeed; I love these decals, they are very good
Bottom of the car is almost finished, just missing the covers
Carbon everywhere - preparing more parts
Dashboard ready
A lot of parts accumulate
Wheels before paint on the wheels and decals (should I trim the inner rim?)
Wheels before paint on the wheels and decals
Tires sanded
Door panels
Preparing belts
Starting to place the belts
Seat belts applied
Top grid is not aligned, forcing for some minutes... 🙁
Decided to sand the inner parts of the wheels, because the visible step on the inside does not exist
Body primed with AK Primer (AK 758) slightly diluted with Mr Leveling Thinner
Body primed with AK Primer (AK 758) slightly diluted with Mr Leveling Thinner
Only thing remaining inside is to fix the main seat belts and glue the decals on them
Getting ready to extract the paint
Paint decanted, still bubbling
Paint applied on the body
Paint applied on the body
Sanding time
Polishing time
The sand pads took some of the paint from the edges, repainting time
Roof sanded and polished, hood and rear to follow
Polishing with Tamiya Coarse compound took more paint than it should
Decided to go the brute way: out with the rattle can, directly!
Decided to go the brute way: out with the rattle can, directly! Shiny! 😄
Windows masked and painted
Decals applied on the clear parts
Preparing the masks for the black
Black (MRP-5) applied
Black painting finished
Tires painted and varnished ("P Zero" decals already applied, on the other side)
Ready for decals
Starting decalling
These decals are terrible - I cut them in 3 parts
Attacking the awful decals with Tamiya's Mark Fit Super Strong
Managed to crack a big star
Bad, but not so bad on this side - terrible Tamiya decals
Clear parts applied in the front of the car
Tail lights on
After 3 coats of Mr Hobby Gloss Premium Top Coat
After 3 coats of Mr Hobby Gloss Premium Top Coat
Varnish attacked the decals ferociously

Ammo’s Ultra Glue applied to the transparent part
In the end, a dirty finger spoiled the right side even further and removal of the dirt remove varnish and paint to the bare plastic (noticeable below the yellow-green curve) - pressed forward or I will go crazy, so, car closed!
Disassembled and ready for weathering
First smoke applied on the sides
Adding dust with Tamiya XF-57 Buff and Light Dust pigments from Ammo (A.MIG-3002)
Adding dust with Tamiya XF-57 Buff
Products used in the weathering
Car finished, please check final photos on separate album under same project: Impreza WRC '99 | Album by RReis (1:24)

Great start. Leave the fingerprint there. It's Personalized.
What is it about this series of cars, that capture our attention.
I have the Great Britain Rally car with the bug-eye fog lamps and every time I see one of the others, I wanna get that one too.
So cool.

Thanks Peppy. Fingerprint corrected already! 😄 I love the big headlights, unfortunately this one can not use them, Tour de Corse did not have night races

Thank you MS K. I used TS-50 not only because it is mentioned in the instructions, but also because lots of colleagues told me that the finish of application directly from the can was unbeatable. And today I am inclined to agree - after it dries, it is rock hard and very smooth and shiny.

Looking really good! In my experience you also do not get much dust in the painted surface when using rattlecans...

Thank you Dennis. Let's hope dust stays away. The tires are a magnet for it, I discovered

Try some Uhu-Tac (or similar product) on the tires to get of the dust. I use to „Roll"this stuff over the tires (dont know how to explain properly o_O)

Had the Same problems with the decals in my build. They where kind of stiff and brittle. Maybe you should try a hairdryer on the decals.

Thanks Dennis, I used Mark Fit Suler Strong and they get really very soft, but when they always return to their original position after drying thoroughly

I don't know whether this is old news on
this forum or not. From the aircraft boards
I used to frequent, Mr. Mark Set and Mr. Softner
we're always recommended for Academy,
Tamiya and Hasegawa decals. The way I
understood it, they were designed for the thicker
stock Asian decals.

Hello Peppy, good advice is never old news! 🙂 I used Tamiya's Mark Fit Super Strong (which is indeed quite strong) but I confess I never tried Mr Softner. I'll have to give it a try sometime soon. Thank you

Ricardo, Mr. Softner will take those old earlier Tamiya
decals and bend the around the edge of those instrument
panels. Two or three applications 90° bend.

Be aware and do not leave „puddles" of mr. Mark softer on the decals. It tends to burn right through the decals. Otherwise good stuff. Been using it for years.

In fact the softener made weird figures on the surface and then, with the varnish on top the result is far from perfect... 🙁

Hm. I would try to carefully wet sand with some 3000 grid sanding sponge to get the surface smooth. Then polish back to high gloss. That's what i usually do to finish the paintjob.
And to be honest: if you see a race car in real live surface of the decals is far from being perfect too 😉

Yes, that should be the way but I must confess the fight with the decals and the strange reactions with the varnish exhausted my patiente with this model. I will not waste any more time with it, and move to finish immediately without any more sanding or polishing. Next one will be better... I hope... 🙂

Totally Understandable. That's what our beloved hobby is all about: to learn what to do better next time. Keep going mate!

Very cool! Love the weathering you did, exactly as it should be for a tarmac event I think. Dirty lower part, clean top.
