The Enterprise Incident

Album image #1
A 31 year old vintage kit, crude by today’s standards. So much sanding, so much filler, so many imperfections. It feels like I’m actually carving the ships myself out of soap or something. A real challenge. I hope I can make them look decent.

The tail of the Romulan Warbird was missing, I had to try and make one. Fortunately, it is a fairly simple shape. Made a shape with paper

Made from a wood craft stick

Album image #8
Not bad, it should clean up with some filler.

Sorry for my ugly grotesque claw, I’m recovering from second degree burns to my hand.
Let the pressure cooker fully cool down before opening the lid! 😛

The saucer section gap is hard to fill in and get smooth..

Album image #11
Primed with Model Masters grey

Album image #15
All primed up and nearly ready to paint. (Or so I thought)

This is the point where I pause, usually for a long time trying to figure out how to not fuck it up.. And then I see a sign post up ahead.. and crossover into the Twilight Zone..

I had a slight airbrush malfunction and had to completely redo the Warbird.
I used Tamiya acrylic thinner for the first time, and it reacted to the Model Masters silver causing a rip in the space-time continuum which sent me hurling back to square one..
I should have tested an unfamiliar product before I went straight to the model... I was getting too cocky..

That's a great kit and progress!

I don't know about progress, but thanks! A real study in putty.. I've been spoiled with too many perfectly fitting modern kits compared with this oldie.

I had this one when I was a kid, I recall it was fun to have all three, you will make them beautiful ????

Yeah, those old (and heck, even new) AMT kits are made with such brittle and ill-fitting plastic. I bought the F-104 Starfighter "Tomorrow is Yesterday" Album | Album by JamesWhite (1:48) kit primarily for the jet because I love that plane. You'll see that I didn't put enormous care into the fit and finish of the Enterprise in that one, so I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turns out!

Crash and burn ladies and gentlemen, literally... Uh, had a slight weapons malfunction and am recovering from second degree burns to my hand.. But we're all fine here now.. How are you?

Tom ...
Yikes! Sorry to hear that JD. As if building this kit wasn't hard enough!

Yeah these older kits require so much more modeling skills then I realized.. It's like one step forward, two steps back..
