My Dad was a belly gunner on B-18's & B-17's. Did most of his training out in the Western part of the U.S. as far as I know.

The AAC pulled him from Hawaii to send a detachment of B-18's up to Alaska, since the runways could not handle the Fortresses at the time. All he did was freeze his tail off for the most part, he said!

lol, wow thats fascinating. I used to live up in Eielson AFB, Alaska. So any time I get an opportunity to build an Alaskan type model I try to take it.

Very nice up there! Got to do a 'Northern Edge' det. up there not long before I retired. Good three weeks up there - we stayed at the University of Alaska dorms (I think). Lots of guys brought back lots of fish!

Yeah nice size fish up there. I will say though the houses up there are designed for the cold, so when it got hot, no air conditioning living nightmare.
