Wheel wells? Green or Yellow Zinc Chromate or same colour as the interior or unpainted?
16 August 2012, 22:08
Holger Kranich
Hey Urban, nice project! I´d say yellow for the wheel wells...
17 August 2012, 06:54
Urban Gardini
I've done some research now n' it seems like it'll be interior green all over.
17 August 2012, 10:12
Vitor Costa
Hi Urban i agree with you interior green was used most of the time.

I will follow this with attention.

Thanks mates! I expect to get goin' more next week when my girlfriend goes back to work from her vacation.

I think its sometimes difficult to see what kind of colour was used. Some green bleaches out and looks more yellowish and vice versa...

Some P-40 have the wheel bay painted wih the fuselage color, some in interior green and others with zink chromate, when i did a reaserch to paint mine i remember that the interior green was the one that i found most.
17 August 2012, 11:26
Urban Gardini
Thanks mates! I'll go with interior green on mine n' on the flaps IF I get to use 'em.
17 August 2012, 12:00
Dave Flitton
Be careful what you see in museum aircraft. Many times the wrong color will be used. Originally it would be Yellow Chromate straight off the production floor, but, as the aircraft went through maintenance and rebuilding during the war, green chromate or interior green, or whatever is available will be used.
17 August 2012, 12:34
Urban Gardini
Thanks Dave! What do you say of me usin' Interior Green on everything except for yellow zinc chromate on the flaps that i hope to be able to use?
17 August 2012, 14:28
Holger Kranich
Here is an interesting link:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_chromate
17 August 2012, 14:35
Dave Flitton
I think the flaps were always zinc chromate. I have not seen any flaps in yellow. Zinc or interior green on the flaps are fine. Yellow was used in the cockpit and wheel wells unless you were Bell or Republic then they were sometimes Bronze Green in the early years of the war.

This will be a good one to watch. I have this same kit, it's very nice I think. Where did the decal sheet come from? My copy of this kit only has the AVG markings, and the sun is printed as it would appear "faded" almost a light pastel blue. The decal sheet you show looks much better, plus it has RAF markings.
17 August 2012, 15:28
Bill Gilman
Ah, never mind. I see from the kit number that the decals come from the Hobby Boss kit.

The Airfix kit shows frames on the front windscreen. I've heard that that is not right, and that there should be no frames - anyone know for sure?
17 August 2012, 15:35
Urban Gardini
Yes, I've got the decals from a friend. It's a shame that they're not darker still as they'd be perfect for the underside of the wings then with the Airfix ones for the upper wings as they got rather bleached by the sun.

As for the flaps I think that yellow zinc chromate would be an interestin' touch if I get to use the flaps.

Thinkin' ahead here a bit. The RAF Roundel Type B on the Hobby Boss decal sheet looks a bit oversized to my eye. Does anyone know what size it should be? I've got a set of roundels that I can use if I just knew the right size for it...

Does anyone have any war-time photos that show this? Cheers!

It looks like just a couple of braces on the inside.

Hi Urban,
I have researched all my fundus, and I`ve found some photos of interest.
I have the complete colour photo series of the P-40 B production in Buffalo.
The Flaps are like Dave had proposed in Interior Green FS 34151.

Well, thanks to my shaky hands there won't be any flaps for this build. I tried to solder one flap but it was impossible for me to do it without floodin' solder everywhere. But it saves time n' I can try it later on on another bird someday. But I did manage to solder the seat ok but the photo of it is shockin' as I don't see the bad paintin' with my own eye, the camera is brutal. I did have some troubles to get the intake grills in place as well n' isn't happy with the result but they'll barely be visible in the end so I've got to live with it. But due to the Eduard instructions not bein' clear enough I did manage to saw off the support to the dashboard when I removed the pedals, will think of some solution to that later on. Sigh, not my day at all today...
20 August 2012, 22:15
Bill Gilman
When I built the 1:72 flaps for my Hunter I used superglue. I can't imagine trying to solder that together! Yikes!

Thanks to Dirk for those great photos. BTW, the first two show the front windscreen clearly. To my eyes it matches the restored photo that I posted. The front windscreen has an even curvature with reinforcing rods and a cross brace at the top. You can even see what looks like the bulletproof plate, clearly on the inside of the front windscreen.

I have a good friend who worked at Curtiss during the war, I will ask him. Also the Curtiss museum is about an hour's drive from my house. They have some nice archives.

Bill Gilman
airmodeller.tripod.com/48UsaP40b.htm

This review of the old Monogram kit describes how the internal braces (to which the bulletproof plate is attached) are commonly mistaken for frames. You can find many articles that support this claim. But I think that those assembly line photos show it best.

Bill Gilman
kits.kitreview.com/p40btrump48reviewbg_1.htm

Here Brett Green describes the 1:48 Trumpeter kit, and he includes a nice photo of the correctly depicted front windscreen (Trumpeter got it right!).

The windscreen changed with the E model, if you look at the photos of the recent find in the Sahara you can what that looked like.

Not much done today but it sure has taken a lot of time to do as little as I've done today. I'm not that positive to the Eduard Zoom PE after my experiences today. The printed paint on 'em is brittle n' tend to flake off when the PE get bent in shape, other than that it scratches even easier. The adhesive backin' on some of the parts make it quite difficult to clean the "sprue" connections from the parts after it's cut from the fret.

Nice work Urban, those new Airfix kits are really fun builds and fun for the wallet too!

Think I'm gonna toss my Academy P-40B and smuggle a few of these Airfix'es inside 🙂

17 September 2012, 11:46

Thanks! It's a good PE set so go for it mate!
17 September 2012, 15:20
Bill Gilman
Are you going to use a vacuform canopy so you can open it up and show off that great PE work? The closed canopy is my one complaint about this kit.
17 September 2012, 16:39
Urban Gardini
Nope, I'm goin' with the original canopy here. I usually builds my birds with a closed canopy.
17 September 2012, 17:02
Urban Gardini
Haven't been able to do much today due to my neck pains n' have only sat down by the bench a couple of minutes per session over the day so today's progress isn't much. But I've managed to mask the bird n' drill out the exhaust pipes at least.
17 September 2012, 21:49
Bill Gilman
Neck pains? Man I hope it's not disc related. Those are killer pains to deal with.
18 September 2012, 00:25
Urban Gardini
Well, I've got two whip lash injuries in my neck but there's those who have it worse than me.
18 September 2012, 07:15
Bill Gilman
I hope you feel better soon! 🙂
18 September 2012, 14:26
Holger Kranich
Yep, a speedy recovery, i wish you too, Urban!;)
18 September 2012, 14:29
Urban Gardini
Thanks mates! It's up n' down with some days with less ache but never a day without any pain.
18 September 2012, 14:41
Bill Gilman
I have severe lower back pain (eight surgeries with the last one just this past May). Doctors are already talking about surgery number 9. I deal with it by "doping." I call it better living through chemistry. 🙂

PS. All the drugs are legal!!
18 September 2012, 16:54
Urban Gardini
I know mate n' I guess that your pain is much worse than mine but it's your pain n' I've got mine n' they don't compare 'cos there's nothin' to compare with. I deal with my pain with painkillers as well.
18 September 2012, 17:54
Urban Gardini
Some progress n' an additional nine photos.

Holger Kranich
Its coming together. Looks very good, Urban. Especially the crosshairs are a detail, i love on the Warhawkseries.GREAT WORK!8)
What kind of camo will you apply here? The one from the box?
21 September 2012, 06:20
Urban Gardini
Thanks mate, this one won't be like the box as I'm gonna shoot it with Middle Stone, Dark Earth n' Azure...
21 September 2012, 07:08
Holger Kranich
Cool idea! So it will look a bit like a IRIAF camo scheme;)!
21 September 2012, 07:57
Urban Gardini
No, not at all as the pattern's gonna be standard RAF style.
21 September 2012, 07:59
Holger Kranich
RAFstyle pattern is clear, i was just talking about the colour mix;). Those RAF coloures where used on aircraft based on carriers?

Urban Gardini
A little more have been done on this bird.
25 September 2012, 09:01
Holger Kranich
Hell yeah, thats looking good! Have you masked with bluetack?
25 September 2012, 09:05
Urban Gardini
Thanks! Nope, I've masked with Tamiya tape.
25 September 2012, 09:13
Holger Kranich
You just pre-cut them on your cuttingmat and applyed them after?
25 September 2012, 09:20
Urban Gardini
Yeah, that's what I normaly do. Here I've cut small strips of 6mm tape freehand with a scissor n' puzzled it all together on the bird.
25 September 2012, 09:25
Holger Kranich
That would have been my approach, too! The result speaks for itself!
25 September 2012, 09:35
Urban Gardini
Thanks, it's a bit tedious though...
25 September 2012, 09:36
Holger Kranich
Oh yes, i can imagine that! And the scale dont makes it easyer!
25 September 2012, 09:39
Urban Gardini
Well, you just have to be man enough to handle the scale...
25 September 2012, 09:46
Holger Kranich
Definately!
25 September 2012, 09:48
Urban Gardini
Now I've demasked the wheel wells...
25 September 2012, 09:59
Holger Kranich
Its looking pretty good! I never expected such nice details from an Airfixkit. But this is a new tool, isnt it?
25 September 2012, 11:06
Wojciech Kucza
So far looking great! And the kit itself is quite nice, even without PE there's quite some details 🙂 Looking forward to finished plane!
25 September 2012, 11:12
Urban Gardini
Even I as well is lookin' forward to see it completed as I'm participatin' in a groupbuild with it over at SP&R n' the deadline is now at sunday, tick tock...
25 September 2012, 12:57
Holger Kranich
So hurry up, Urban!
25 September 2012, 14:57
Urban Gardini
Tick! Tock! I'm in the process of puttin the decals in place right now! One by one. This is the first time I work with Hobby Boss decals n' they're so far fairly easy to work with but a little stiff. We'll see how they turn out after some Micro Sol n' a layer of Tamiya X-35.
25 September 2012, 15:02
Philip De Keyser

So looking through your build, you mention for interior color (colour) to use Humbrol #151. What is it? The Humbrol site does not have a 151 in the list. Is it now 226? Please enlighten me 😎
5 May 2015, 01:33
Urban Gardini
Sorry but it's an old colour that is OOP since long now. Nearly all my Humbrol Enamels is from the eighties. The #151 was the one that was the closest colour hue that Eduard have used for the PE.

Hi Urban, thats a great build. You didnt wanted to attach the flaps, after having so much work with them? But the coolest is the crosshair in front of the canopy! It looks marvelous to me!

Thanks mate! I didn't have the time to order a new PE set and start all over again with the flaps. I was done with it only a few days before the timelimit and that was lucky as I won a great price with this one. A Eduard MiG-21bis + a lot of Eduard goodies...

I got more kits and PE as well so I've got plans for at least one P-40B with dropped flaps. But the price I won also led to a severe case of Eduard MiG sickness... McCoy;

It all began with a wish to go all in with the bis and I ordered the few missing extras that wasn't included with the price but it didn't stop there as Eduard shortly after that announced the BFC and the rest is as they say history...
