it’s a cool, looking kit even without lights, but I want to make sure it is extra special. The goal is to have a panel of buttons which light up different areas of the ship as if it were a museum display.

Joe MarreroThis is a nice idea. A guy at the Winconsin regionals contest had a cut away of an aircraft carrier. You might be able to do something similar for a portion of the ship. The scale will be a challenge.
