This shows the cockpit. I spent a lot of time on the wood grain which I'm quite happy with. I then added dirt and grime to the floor which I had never done before...I think it turned out reasonably well...

Here is the assembled version where I’ve added spark plug leads made from Maxima fishing line, painted with a Tamiya yellow acrylic
Here I added 24 gauge wire for the lifters. I also spent soem time weathering and adding oil leaks to the crankcase (not sure if its visible)

A closer look at the weathering/heat effects
This will be added to the exhaust. I coated the pipe with a fine mess from garlic packaging, coated with Tamiya white acrylic. I will weather it with a light rust wash to mimic the asbestos wrapping.
Here I've added the seat belts. I finished them with Tamiya XF-59 (desert yellow) and Vallejo 71.062 (Aluminum). I then covered them with a rust wash to give it some contrast.
Here I show the how I connected the ailerons using a 24 gauge wire, which several websites recommend. The wing was drilled out using a #74 drill bit and secured with MIG Acrylic glue.

I am now working on the ribs for the wings to simulate the somewhat translucent doped linen look. I first cover the wing with XF-64 (red brown). I then cut 0.5mm strips of 3M tape for the ribs, 1mm for the struts and 2 mm for the front part of the wing (not sure of the correct term...will have to look it up) 🙂. BTW...note the mixing tubes in the upper right hand side. I've re-purposed rapid COVID test tubes...they make excellent mixing and dispensing tubes for airbrushing. You can fill them from the top, shake to mix them and once re-capped you can dispense just the right amount from the bottom when needed...
I then airbrush a 50/50 mix of X-2 (white) and XF-55 (tan).
Here is the finished doped linen look. I airbrushed a 4:1 mix of Tamiya X-2 (white) and XF-55 (tan) between the ribs to give it contrast..
A closer look at the ribs and struts after finishing...I'm pretty happy with it...
Masking before airbrushing
Airbrushed the fuselage and wings with the WNW recommended XF-62 and XF-10 at a 2:1 ratio. I then added one unit of X-22 (clear) to give it a semi-gloss look.
This shows the top wing which I have yet to finish.
This is the look I am trying to replicate on the fuselage and wings. You can see that the surface is coated with an oil like substance used to seal the linen surface
I used a combination of washes to mimic the "oil like" coating. I used a combination of fuel stain wash (5 parts) with rust and black washes (1 part each). The fuel stain provides an oily film, while the rust and black provide the colour. I will shortly add some pictures showing how it came out on the fuselage...
Here is my final result... It may be hard to see with this image, but I think it looks pretty good (i.e. I'm happy with it) 🙂

I found an on-line vendor on ETSY that can provide stencils if you provide them an image. I created the image using photoshop and tried various sizes of fonts. The vendor is CREEKTEE and you need to select “stencils for airbrushing”. They are very friendly and do nice work
Here is the end result after airbrushing…I was really happy with the results…
I wanted to get the illusion of thin laminated wood. I used 0.5mm masking tape and wrapped it around following the natural contours of the blades.

This is the real RE8. I recently visited the RAF museum outside of London where they have a great collection of WWI aircraft. A must see!

cecilThanks guys! This is my fourth model since taking up the hobby during COVID, so I'm still learning. This is my toughest model yet… hope to have more to show over the next few weeks.

cecilKarl... For woodgrain I've played around with a bunch of methods, but right now I've settled on using a base of Tamiya XF-59 Dessert Yellow. I then dry brush oil paints (I start with a light coat of Yellow Ochre cut with Winsor & Newton - Liquid Fine Detail). This thins the paint and quickens the cure time. Then depending on the texture and colour I'm looking for I add darker colours (in order - Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Ivory Black). For instance if I want a really dark wood grain I use the entire spectrum (but be careful as you use the dark colours...thin dry brushing is the key). I then coat the entire surface with either Tamiya X-24 Clear Yellow or X-26 Clear Orange or a combination depending on how dark a shade I'm looking for. Anyway...do you have an alternate method...I'd be interested... Thx...Cecil

No worries about hijacking the thread...I love the discussion. Nice work on the weathering, I may play around a bit with some of your suggestions. I've used soft Patels for my props, but not anything inside the cockpit. BTW...your engine looks fantastic...much better than mine. What did you use for wiring? Any aftermarket parts? Any hints on your finishing? Cecil
