What a marvelous interior job! And what a pity, that it can't be seen that good, once the fuselage is closed. Thanks, Jan, for showing us before...! 🙂

Very nice work, Jan! Which paint scheme will you use?
19 September 2012, 17:58
Jan Goormans
Bill, the early two tone camouflage scheme, i plan to build the plane (nr 11) in the picture, it was based on the Piva Uncle strip on Bougainville, so i suppose it needs to be badly weathered,
will go for Gunze Sangyo 367 Blue Grey (FS35189) for the upper surfaces and Gunze-Sangyo H11 Light Gull Grey as a basis (please correct me if these are wrong)

The two-tone scheme was made from M-485 Blue-Gray on the top surfaces and M-495 Light Gray on the underside was in effect until August 1941. Most of the conversion charts I have show the FS numbers you mention as being equivalent. After that, the two-tone scheme was No. 12 Blue-Gray and No. 10 Light Gray. This lasted until January 1943.

I suspect that the aircraft you are modelling would be in the latter two-tone scheme. What I don't know is how different the latter scheme was from the former. This site has a lot of information on the topic:

thanks Bill
that is a very good site with lots of information
already found these in the IPMS Stockholm colour sharts:
Nonspecular Light Gray is close to FS 36440 (Gunze 325) and nonspecular Blue Gray close to FS 35189 (no match, will have to mix this one)

thanks for the help

good stuff!

All of the model paint cross-reference charts show the closest match to 35189 is RAF PRU Blue, but that doesn't seem quite right to me. More investigation to follow... 🙂

Cool model. My father was a rear gunner on one of these when he flew off the Yorktown and later the Enterprise during the various early battles of the war.

I asked the paint question over on Britmodeller and got some interesting responses, including an endorsement of PRU Blue as being "very close" to the USN non-specular blue-grey. Testors ModelMaster and WEM both have the USN Blue-Grey in their portfolio, and I'm told Tamiya XF-18 is a good match.

One of the reasons I asked over on Britmodeller is any color question usually gets a response from Nick Millman (known for his impeccable knowledge of WWII Japanese colors). He's also quite the expert on the Munsell Color System, and has measured many artifacts from WWII. When he responds, I'll point you to his post - it will be fascinating reading!

Bill Gilman
Good news, Nick has responded. You can read it in this thread:

britmodeller.com/for..?showtopic=234926555

Be prepared for some science! This guy knows what he's talking about, and he can back it up with real data! And as it turns out, PRU Blue is not a bad choice for one of the colors you can use in a faded version of the blue-gray.

was going to spray part of the aircraft with hairspray and then yellow paint to start the weathering
so i masked the other airframe part

BUT : problems with the Alclad NMF coat
it's coming of very very easy , undercoat is Alclad grey primer

what have i done wrong ????

thanks for your help/advise
Jan

Bill Gilman
That sounds odd. You used Alclad grey primer over the plastic, and then Alclad NMF (which shade?) over the primer. No hairspray yet, right? Is it just the NMF that is coming off? Or is it the primer?
9 October 2012, 17:18
Jan Goormans
Bill , odd indeed,
the Alclad grey primer over the plastic, and then ALC 119 Airframe aluminium, no hairspray yet
the Airframe Aluminium is coming off very easy, even with very low tack masking tape , tested a few different tapes after the first sings that the NMF came off , and i do have several tapes since i work for a US company from Minnesota 🙂
so now i an thinking of getting those Gunze metal paints next show

any suggestions ?
9 October 2012, 17:39
Wilfried Bogaerts
?? Sad news 🙁

I have no experience with Alclad on large surfaces, until now I only used it on landing gear, engines, exhaust nozzles etc without priming, directly to the plastic. These parts are handled a lot before fitting and I never had any peeling problems. I also used Alclad white primer and found out that this was a very though coat and sticked well to the surface (it needed a lot of polishing but that was entirely my fault due to my air pressure experiments). But then... I used once Alclad gloss black primer and this came off very very easily, you just had to rub your thumb a few times over the gloss coat (lightly) and off came the black. Never used the grey primer so far, is it a matt primer or a gloss coat just like the black?

And as Bill stated, is it the primer or just the NMF that's peeling?
9 October 2012, 17:41
Jan Goormans
just the NMF is coming off completely, only in the panel lines it's not gone
the grey primer on the other hand is intact
9 October 2012, 17:44
Wilfried Bogaerts
Hi Jan, last Friday at the club I sprayed Alclad Airframe Alu on the inner side of my Oscar, without priming. After 1 hour or so the coat was dry and very solid so I continued with Gunze Clear Green to simulate Aotake. Must say that the Alclad layer was biting into the plastic as it should, without any negative side effects.

What I always do before spraying (any brand) is cleaning my model/part with a cloth/brush loaded with methanol to remove all leftovers of my dirty greasy fingers but I'm sure you clean your models as well 🙂
9 October 2012, 17:50
Wilfried Bogaerts
Hmmm, only the NMF, not the primer, that is very strange indeed 🤔
9 October 2012, 17:53
stefan natus
The 119 Airframe aluminium needs a gloss (black) cote to spray on but that's probably not the cause.
You can find the instructions on the alclad website.
Nice work on the interior.
9 October 2012, 18:11
Bill Gilman
Good catch, Stefan. I forgot that the Airframe Aluminum was one of their "high shine" finishes, which require the gloss black base or clear base as a primer. If you don't have any of the Alclad black base, you could try gloss black enamel. I've used that in the past with good results.

Kim Branders
very nice man. I build only tanks but this looks very cool.
10 October 2012, 05:47
Jan Goormans
thanks guys !!
will see how i move on since that NMF will only be visible on small parts of the fuselage
10 October 2012, 13:33
Sherif Sharmy
Can`t wait to see it complete. Maybe the NMF could be part of the weathering?
10 October 2012, 17:27
Dirk Heyer
The cockpit looks busy, I like that!
Models with rich basic details offers a lot of possibilities for painting and weathering! If you paint your Dauntless as seen in picture 19 it will be a eye-catcher!
The red dive brakes are always a bright-full focus!
4 November 2012, 14:38
Jan Goormans
started with the painting of the underside
basic painting is done, next is the weathering

Will this be finished at your contest in Putte?
19 November 2012, 20:08
Jan Goormans
Started working on the top side
The darker blue parts are with the original colour, the rest is a lot lighter to simulate the wear by the sun
Next step is to bring this to life

It is always a pleasure to see your result! Sometimes like this one only OOB but with painting and weathering with such high lvl and so many patience and pleasure.
Well done Jan. 🙂
27 November 2012, 22:55
Jan Goormans
thanks guys !!!!
now the weathering can start , first spraying all over the top side with very diluted different colours (even clear orange will be used) to get that uneven look, later oil paints
so a long way to go
