Very nice paint work and finish. The metal effect and burnt exhaust came out very nice.

I would appreciate some information about the kit. Did you have to modify it considerably or is what we see what you got?

Thanks everyone for all the kind words! 🙏🏻👍🏻

On the question if this kits needs to be considerably modified: not really, the kit has some fitting issues, but nothing dramatic. The wing roots will need some careful attention and to be 100% correct, the parts to "hang up" the canopy in open position need to be glued to the glass (and scratch some details underneath). In 1/48 Trumpeter got that right, but not in 1/72 - but again that's nothing major.
I rescribed the whole model, but this was more to be according to my taste, you can do easily without that.

I believe it is currently the best F-100 in the scale on offer. I started with the Italeri kit, but abandoned that one to start this one (less details and a bit more fitting issues)

Hope this helps. 😉

Fantastic result man, so nicely finished! I love it! Natural metal finishes are so challenging in this scale.

Because there was a discussion about it, here are some comments about the Trumpeter kit itself from my side, since I already built two of these and studied the topic:

#1. the nose/air intake is the most disturbing part of the kit since it is flat at the bottom, instead of being a symmetric oval. This basically ruins one of the nicest features/highlights of the F-100 in my opinion and it's very hard to correct without a resin replacement.
#2. the main landing gear wheels are considerably oversized (over 50%), raising the entire rear part of the fuselage, therefore altering the overall position of the model (the known "nose up" of the F-100D). This can be easily corrected by sanding them down.
#3. the cockpit parts are almost unusuable in my opinion. There are literally close to no details aside from some badly done decals. The ejection seat is somehow decent maybe. Altogether, the topic of cockpit details is very subjective indeed.

Maybe other secondary things:
#4. The wings are at least two times thinner than they should be. Even without knowing the aircraft, you kind of notice something is odd with the proportions.
#5. Some are saying the fuselage width in the canopy area is quite inaccurate (too wide), but I actually never noticed that and is not that striking in my opinion. No idea if this is even true.
#6. There are no clear parts in the kit for any underside lights, only some holes in the fuselage, but no actual lights to fit in. I didn't manage to fix this myself either.
#7 Absolutely no decals or stencils for the weapons' pylons, which by the way are lacking almost any details. Some people can live without as well.

Overall this is still the best F-100D kit in 1:72 with nicely recessed panel lines and overall easy build. In case anybody else wants to start this kit, I would really try to correct #1 and #2. Be aware that the F-100C from Trumpeter has other more annoying issues with the vertical tail (in case it bothers someone). Again, this is just my review of the kit itself and doesn't refer to the wonderful model of Guido!

Thanks again for the additional comments! 🙏🏻

@Marius,
Good for your (research) work.

I had read about some of the 'issues', but in general I don't mind such things too much. Typically I only use a standard cockpit PE-set and maybe resin wheels (easier to glue little magnets into them) - and leave "surgery" to others -> don't go and look at my F-16… 😅
"If it looks like one, it is one" and I think this one looks like an F-100 to me. 😉

And, more importantly, life is short and the stash large, so for the sake of progress I 'm happy to compromise. 😊

Thanks again.

above comments drive home again a point I actually know but somehow cannot follow (yet) 🙂. A lot of effort we put into correcting kits is visible for experts only. And yes - life is short. So I should strive to live more according to Guidos philosophy.
But I really appreciate comments like Marios who points out issues, so that I have a better idea of what to expect when I buy a kit. Thanks for that.
And again: great build!

I completely agree with you Guido in terms of philosophy, unfortunately I am just like Michael not really there (just) yet. The stash gets indeed larger while life gets shorter. Maybe sticking only to some small interior PE's with maybe some metallic Pitot tubes or guns is indeed the only way to kill the stash of doom.

The problem is, as soon as you want to research just a little bit about a new kit, there are plenty of people already complaining/listing what is inaccurate about a model and you don't really know if you will notice or care about these defects unless the model is finished. Some aftermarket parts we buy in advance might not be even needed, but we want to be on the safe side "just in case". This is at least my problem. Some forums complain about how bad the Italeri F-100 is, but I've seen finished models of it (out-pf-box) which look just great and probably I will give it a try too.

And yes, if it looks like one, it is indeed one and yours definitely looks like a great one. Btw Guido, what paint did you use for the burned exhaust? Was it AK - Xtreme Metallic Paints "Burnt Exhaust"?

I understand completely. I used to be on fora (mainly automotive models from the days I did only that) but when I rediscovered how much fun airplanes were, I never got into these fora, avoiding them on purpose, because indeed you tend to stall over other's opinions.
I do look at builds online to see what and how, but when I sometimes read: perfect kit - and then run knto issues I wonder about the value of these things. Or the other way around: horrible kit, but it was sort of ok…

Anyways, I try limit expenditure (and therefore work) both with my plane and car models. Seat belts and wheel valves for the latter. I find a model with a very well executed paint job and a little bit less detail mich nicer then loaded with details and an ok finish. But it's all personal taste and at the end of the day, the models live on my shelf to be looked at by me. 😁

I'm using Alclad throughout. 😉 it was a mixture of a bit of everything, and some "standard" water pencils.

What a great finish, very well done 👍

I am a bit lazy to step through all the information above, cause life is to short 😄, so I need to ask if the white and yellow markings are painted or decals!? It looks like paintwork to me!

Happy Modelling, Christian

Thanks Christian! Yellow and white markings are the kit decals. In the areas on the decals where there was a bit of "bleeding-through" from the paint coat underneath (the white decals were not 100% fully covering as white), I touched them up with Ammo oil brusher paints. Worked well.
