Q: Anybody experienced using Bare Metal Foil?

I am wondering, if you add just plain aluminium foil, or mostly one type of foil, how might one want to weather the foil all over the airplane, without just adding other types of foil like chrome foil or dull aluminium?

I am tempted to just add one type of aluminium bare metal foil on a 1:72 cargo plane, but I don't how I would want to create any contrast effect for the panels if I only used one type of bare metal foil.

I'v wondered how people do it myself to,might be worth maybe glueing a few 4inch squares down onto a board maybe put some grooves into it and try a few washes to see what works?

Hm, point well taken. I guess I should be able to use a little of the somewhat expensive bare metal foil for testing.
Though, not sure what I can do. I think I could add some texture to it, by sanding it, but that alone ofc, won't create any difference shading. Hm, maybe a wash might stick as you suggest.

its a tricky medium to use you raise a good point about the texture though to, if you had a rivet tool that could add to a test

A last passing thought you could also try polish to weather and change the weathering effect

Btw, I remember reading in a book 30 years ago, someone discolored their aluminium foil, by placing the foil in a kettle of boiling water w. egg shells (or just eggs I guess), iirc, that discolored the metal. Ofc, that isn't interesting, as the bare metal foil is self-adhesive.

Yes that works iv done similar things to clean coins with water and foil btw spent a while digging this chap seems to have a few methods britmodeller.com/for..vets-to-an-airplane/

@ Treehugger I believe Augie ,did a build in 2021/22 of a B-29 variant using foil ..that turned out fabulous

I remember that. Do you remember if he weathered/discolored the surface?

@Andrew, thanks for the link.

Ask 5 People, get 10 different Answers - i tried BMF for chrome-plating Bumpers in 1/24, but it wasn't worth the effort for me. It is a very thin foil, much thinner than usual Household-Aluminum so i used it a few times for masking canopies 🙂
But i rather use chrome-paint from Alclad, sprayed with Airbrush.
Dont' forget the scale effect for shiny Surfaces as well...

Hi Treehugger, she weathered it with normal weathering material and alternated the side used to offer the contrast.

Aha

Btw, I vaguely remember having seen somewhere that the Bare Metal Foil product can be massaged so thin, that the seams blend. I think the context was using the foil on car models where there are lots of curved details. Presumably the foil can be massaged to fit changes in curvatures and maybe mushed flat in places to hide seams.

Oh it can, I used burnishing sticks to get it in and to conform to curvitures etc.
