Panzerkampfwagen VIII "Maus II"

Album image #1
The really nice boxart I want to use as inspiration for this build... maybe I´ll cut it out to present it with the finished model...

Album image #2
The mayor assembly is done, the fit was nice, but I will have to do some filling...

Album image #3
Assembly has been completed! I added some armour-texture around the vehicle, as the thick plates of the Maus really had to get some "heavy" look

Album image #4
The texture may look strong now, but should be subtle compared to the molded in cast-texture on the mantlet

Album image #5
The purpose of the texture is to represent some machining done to the big plates. It is documented that there were some manufacturing difficulties on those thick plates and it thus seems resonable to think that this would be present in potential later vehicles

Album image #6
Now, the Maus II is waiting for paint... or maybe some light battle-damage or stowage? I have yet to decide on that

Album image #7
basic paint layers have been applied using maskin putty. I now need to iron out some odd edges and add the Dunkelgelb-spots using a paintbrush... Highlights will likely be done using oil paints

Album image #8
I finished the camo by adding dots using a paintbrush and then sealed the model using a flat varnish

Album image #9
As I had an issue with the flat varnish lifting off the surface around the decals (can´t safely point out a reason...) I added some beat up tarps on the turret... let´s just say they are remains of some anti-air camouflage or something

Album image #10
Oils and a pinwash where applied to make the vehicle look more interesting. Also, I painted the tarps on the turret

A Maus in an octopus scheme would indeed look interesting... Maybe I´ll try one on an E-100

Great result!
A well-executed pattern and your chipping and weathering fits perfectly to this scheme.
The camouflage tarpaulins give the whole individuality and bring in a little more variety.
Really like your work 👌

Thanks for the feedback! Considering the tarpaulins were a method to cover up a misshap with the varnish in the first place, I was indeed rather happy how they turned out 🙂 Most importantly, I had an easier time sculpting using Tamiya putty than using Milliput which made the process rather enjoyable 👍

Album info

In contrast to the "AA-Maus" previously released by Vespid, the Maus II is very much a real project. It intended to provide a new, more angular and thus likely simpler turret for the Maus. main armament remained the same in the form of one 128cm gun and one coaxial 75mm KwK which was however mounted above the larger weapon. It is being specualted that possible Maus II-configured tanks could have been produced from Hull No.8 onwards, as the previous hulls 1-7 had turret rings for the earlier turret, while hulls 8 onwards weren´t assembled and thus elligible for retooling...

Anyhow, the kit is the new 2021 offering from Vespid which I got a hold on at EME 2022. The boxart-vehicle looks really cool and I am thus planning to do this camouflage. Maybe I will add some hull number or name on the side (if I find some suitable details), as I´d like to think of possible further production Maus-tanks to be named (akin to WW1 tanks) or at least bearing their hull numbers as a result of being "special vehicles". And yes, I guess a 180ton chonker does qualify as "special" 🙂
