Thank you! I am glad I could finally finish the cockpit (started just after X-mas). I only replaced the instrument panel and added a few parts from the Eduard set (plus of course the steel belts). The rest looks better in the box, IMHO. Then it was pretty straight forward to get something that looks like an aeroplane 🙂

Hi Stefan, not your scale, huh.... also I am not sure I can push this project through, but I am trying.

Cheers Roberto! Today I added the tail planes and painted and installed the gun sight .. a bit late but it worked out. Then I added the windscreen.
I am not quite sure what to do with the area behind the seat. I will probably not add the PE because it cannot be see through the two clear plastic parts, but maybe I need to fill the seams...

Thank you guys! @Holger: it is a new Tamiya kit ... it is what you would expect (I do not like their Bf 109G-6 though, that one is much too complicated)

I airbrushed the model yesterday in black as a primer. I first tried to sray AK Extreme aluminum directly on the surface, but it did not cover the flow marks (which you could not see on the bare plastic but were very proud on the metal surface. The blck has a slightly rough surface (see 2nd pic) so I gave it a slight rub with Zero Paints "Key and Clean".

Now with aluminum over black it looks the part. I will not do panel shading as stripes and blotches will take care of the uniform look...

Today I masked the tail and the recognition stripes - which were also red on this machine on the day I like to represent. 244th sentai was about to go for a larger attack with some special markings on the COs machine ... in the end it was cancelled, but there were some nice pictures taken that day

today I started to apply the HGW wet transfers. Works quite well, but still a bit of touch up will be necessary. I have used XF70 for the first try .. still need to wait for the appearance of the dried paint

Thank you Guys! The camo transfers are applied. Still need to remove the carrier foil on the lhs. I screwed the wet transfers for the lower right engine covers so I had to paint these. On a closer look it is visible but from a feet away that should be no problem. Sadly I am running out of time and this will not make it to Lingen ... still a lot of work to do on the undercarriage (Eduard PE + Brassin)

Well, after a year of building other stuff it is probably time to resume this project. It was not shelved but just put aside as about 5 other projects that I consider rather as ongoing than stopped. I have just copied the picture from the book I have and took a closer look at the supercharger intake. This one is definitely not red but silver with camo dots. So I painted some green dots on it (roughly as on the pic).

The wheel bay color is kind of a challenge. I have posted my question on Hyperscale and there is not that definitive answer. To stick with my XF-59 interior I have used the same paint with two drops of XF-5 added and a tiny bit of black. I got a nice khaki tone that is (in my book) a weathered sandy interior paint and fits nicely the explanations in the Lifelike instructions ... even though it might be totally wrong.

In my lunchbreak today I airbrushed the whole model Tamiya X-22. Then this evening I gave the model a nice wash with water colours. This time I kept it on the black side because it improves the metal look but still there is some umber added

I have started to tackle the undercarriage and drop tanks. The latter are Brassin items and were painted IJA light grey with black brackets. The mounts were airbrushed black then silver (one of the Tamiya rattle can stuff AS 12 or TS 30 .. I forgot which I decanted in what jar). Same for the undercarriage and wheels (Brassin) but I masked off the sections that should remain black. Afterwards the oloe strut sleeves were painted rubber black, as was the tail wheel roller. The dust cover was painted a greenish khaki colour (something that was standing in front of me, no idea what that was)

Painting was a bit difficult but worked out o.k. I lost one of the u/c door numbers from the Lifelike set and had to use the Tamiya decal instead .. it is not as obvious as I thought but still you can easily recognize the fatter Tamiya font.
To mount the inner u/c doors you need a section from the Tamiya part as Eduard did not make a replacement for the wheel well wall (they also do not mention it in the instructions. Watch out there is also a small segment of the wing attached to it that you need! All in all this is quite easy to do but hard to explain. Hope the drawings help a little. I'll add two more photos but I really do not like such close ups of my model kits.

man.......just looking at that PE drawing for the UC doors gives me the creeps, I really don't like working with PE. I can never get the CA glue to work on those small bit....end result CA glue everywhere and parts not glued....But your Japanese bird is looking really good!

Thank you guys! On these close ups I always see things that I could do better. e.g. I will need to fix the gap that opened due to the bending that was not planed.

Progress is slim. I have added the brake lines to the u/c legs and I have attached decals and fuel pipes to the drop tanks.

Lots of small bits and pieces added. It is not difficult but takes time and nerves. I have added some parts in the wheel bays, attached the u/c doors and the small oil cooler (or whatever that is) from Quickboost. I mostly used Gators glue for these parts.

Cheers Wim,
I do not like to use CA either. Gators glue is a white glue (acrylic) like the stuff you use to glue wood (e.g. Ponal here in Germany). You can thin and clean it with water (while not dried) and it dries transparent when not applied in too thick layers. Gators is optimized for modelling use and is a bit stronger than the normal wood stuff. It still is slightly flexible when dry which is a bonus as I often have CA fixed parts flying around at the slightest touch.
OTOH it dries not as fast as CA and the bond is not as strong on small surfaces so sometimes it is nice to first tack a part with CA and secure it with Gators against snapping or vice versa when you like to have some time to position a part. For parts like the hatches in the wheel bays Gators is a lot better. But I often use CA for resin wheels or other larger parts when strength and speed is required .. of course mixing 2K epoxy stuff is also an option but I prefer the easy use of Gators. AK has just issued something similar but I have not tested it yet

Danke Daniel! ... ist ja noch nicht fertig.
Just to show what I am doing right now: the Brassin guns are quite nice, but they are not hollow (which is a major drawback of all Eduard Brassin guns) so I drilled them out. I also had no resin venturi tube so I drilled out the kit part both ends with a conical chamfer and glued in a short 0.6mm Alu tube at the front end.

So finally the flat coat is on, the prop is ready and many smaller parts already attached. I took a photo in my lightbox as it is pretty grey outside and this would lead to a grey appearance of the metal surfaces (just like on the real thing) ... it still has some metal shine though and in bright sunlight it will sparkle 🙂
