Supermarine Attacker FB.2 (AZ Model)

Album image #1
This will be a good addition to my FAA collection - I'll be making the FB.2 version, not the prototype.

Album image #2
Typical AZ short run moulding from ten years ago or more.

Album image #3
I decided to fold the wings to give her a bit more pizzaz. Note the one piece resin cockpit/seat.

Album image #4
The Airwaves PE is for the Frog kit, but I'll use it anyway. The FB.2 markings I want are on the old Modeldecal sheet.

Album image #5
Note where AZ tell you to put part number 10 and note the silhouette of the cockpit on it. Oops.

Album image #6
They tell you to put it here...

Album image #7
...when it actually has to go here.

Album image #8
AZ do not provide the boundary layer inlets, so I'll have to make them.

Album image #9
Don't you just love plastic styrene card? These pieces are 0.008" thick.

Album image #10
Not sure what happened here, but this is supposed to be the arresting hook bay. Ha! Guess I'll have to make that too!

Album image #11
The boundary layer inlets in place.

Album image #12
And with the main intake leading edge in place. The leading edge needs some cleaning up.

Album image #13
Out of the box on the left, after a little reworking on the right.

Album image #14
A little paint and some dry brushing and you'd never know it was one piece. Hope nobody looks real close.

Album image #15
The instrument panel from the Airwaves PE set, with instrument decals from the sticker box.

Album image #16
The two fuselage halves weren't the same height, but I added these spreaders to one side.

Album image #17
For some reason I want to paint this yellow and sing "Full speed ahead Mr. Boatswain, full speed ahead!"

Album image #18
But instead she'll get that loverly Extra Dark Sea Grey. And some Sky, of course.

Album image #19
Forgot the wings - here they are!

Album image #20
I covered up the nasty seam on the turtledeck (right behind the head rest) with some plastic card.

Album image #21
And some more plastic card to make and arresting hook bay.

Album image #22
A little Sky as a primer to see how bad my workmanship is. Uh, I found some things to fix!

Album image #23
Looks a little better than what I started with!

Album image #24
A resin K-14 gunsight is masquerading as a Mk.4E, which is what the Attacker used.

Album image #25
AZ left out the auxilliary cooling inlets on top of the fuselage, so the spares box came in handy again. Note that I cut off the wingtips.

Album image #26
The kit included the prototype's simple bubble canopy. A little strategic masking and we've got the framework as seen on the FB.2.

Album image #27
Adding photoetch vents and blending in the windscreen.

Album image #28
Some nice Gunze Extra Dark Sea Grey and some modulation with Dark Sea Grey.

Album image #29
Not too much to clean up once the tape is removed.

Album image #30
And to think this is related to a Spitfire...

Album image #31
Stickers! From an old Modeldecal sheet. Also, some chromate yellow at the wing fold.

Album image #32
Can't miss those numbers.

Album image #33
Some post shading with Gunze Smoke Grey. Attackers didn't get very dirty - they weren't in service that long.

Album image #34
Alclad clear flat varnish tones things down nicely.

Album image #35
These radar altimeter antennae are extra parts from my CMR Sea Venom, and they're perfect for the Attacker.

Album image #36
Antennae are on, as well as rockets/pylons and deck landing sight on top of the nose.

Album image #37
The photoetch pieces sticking out of the nose look a bit odd, but they're authentic.

Album image #38
Exhaust tube is Alclad steel. Got to get the wing tips on next...

Album image #39
Finished!

Hi mates, this is my little side project that I'll be building in-between the big sub-assemblies on the 1:32 Tamiya Spitfire. There are not a lot of kits for the Attacker, and this one is probably the best injection kit. CMR make a resin kit, but I don't think it's up to the same level of quality as their latest Scimitar, Buccaneer, or Sea Venom beauties. Anyway, the AZ Attacker kit is not without its faults, and I'll be fixing them as I go along. I decided to tart up the kit with some Airwaves photoetch, which may need to be modified since it was designed for the Frog kit. But then, Airwaves PE doesn't always fit the kit it was designed for, so maybe it will work out OK! Enjoy the photos - Cheers, Bill

Album info

This is the old AZ kit which I'll be tarting up with the Airwaves photoetch set (hope it fits since it's for the Frog kit), and some aftermarket stickers from Modeldecal. I'll be folding the wings, too.
