As I would like to present my Lotus with a driver figure on modeling shows and contests, I started to airbrush the Jochen Rindt face.

I am not a figurine specialist of course, but I found a great tutorial on the internet to spray a face in 3 basic steps, with an immediate result.

The driver figure has been detail painted and the shadows have been added.

Next the sponsor decals have been applied.

After setting the decals, they received a flat coat because they were too glossy.

It's hard to show the subtle shadows on the racesuit taking pictures, in reality it looks a lot better.

I missed a driver's helmet. I don't have a sixties model at hand, so I scratched one starting from an eighties helmet (left). I also scratched a vizor (not finished yet). To be continued.

I finished scratching the vizor with a piece of old celluloid and some punched aluminium rivets. Only the chin straps are still missing.

Next the helmet and the vizor were spraypainted in metallic dark green and white, after which the were glued together. The artificial light doesn't do the helmet justice, I'll take more pictures outside later on.

I noticed where light source reflects on top of the Helmet the metal flakes, suggesting to me use of metallic paint, what I wasn't aware of was the colour, I actually thought it was black... anyway! excellent work Guy, looking forward to seeing it completed🙂👍

Steve, before I started this project and the Graham Hill Lotus 49B, I was convinced that Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt all had black helmets; in fact neither of them does! Clark wore a dark blue helmet with a white vizor, Hill wore a dark blue helmet with 8 white oars, and Rindt wore a dark green helmet with a white vizor! But these are things that I only find out when I actually want to start spraypainting the helmets😉

Another Helmet like that Guy was Mike Hawthorn's, everyone at one time thought his Helmet was black, adding support to this theory was black & white photography, readily used at that time. But it was in fact dark brown, similar in style to your Rindt Helmet🙂

Speaking of Black & White Photography. I once saw at a Model Show a Diorama of Mike Hawthorn, Juan Manuel Fangio tussling for position in a race, I think it was Monaco. The whole thing cars, scenery and Drivers were all in different shades of black, grey, silver and white. I asked the proud owner what his inspiration had been, "I have a black & white photo of that scene and couldn't work out what the correct colours were"...
