Love the detail in the pit.

Eduard really packed alot of detail into that kit. I really love the gunsight and often wonder why won't every manufacturer do them like that in every kit. 🙂

Nice progress so far! I built the Eduard P-39L/N a while back, it's a really nice kit. Don't forget to weigh down the nose.

Looks good David. Makes me want to start mine P-39 too.

Thanks Erik and Björn! The nose is already filled with 15grams of lead out of my fishing tackle box. The kit is nice, but you notice the age of it, compared to recent Eduard forms. Not that it's bad tough.

Looks great so far. What is the cokpit color, interior green or gray? I have one p-400 from Eduard, and my idea is to do rivets like you did.So your work is nice reference for my further build.

Thanks Predrag! The color i used for the cockpit is vallejo air 71.021 black green which i used to represent army dull dark green. On the chair, i used vallejo air 71.014 gunship green to represent bronze green. This is not historically accurate, since cockpits were probably painted in one color. Bronze green also is highly unlikely for a P-39. If you want it as accurate as possible you could either go for army dull dark green or a variation of interior green (ANA 611). Probably ANA 611. Depending where and when your P-39 was build and deployed. A good read might be this article: ipmsstockholm.org/ma..erior_colours_us.htm

This P-39 is a test for a future project of mine tough, a P-47 with all kind of aftermarket details. So i decided to try out the colors that are most likely used on the Thunderbolt cockpit i will be building.

Sanded the seams of the fuselage halves and did the rivets on that area. Glued the wings to the fuselage and filled some gaps on the front wheel bays.

Progress looks fine. When will you unwrap your gift?
What's that kit in the background of picture 10? Looks like a destroyer, but I can't find any album of yours with it.
28 October 2017, 21:01
David Thor
Tomorrow, it will have dried and i will close the small remaining gaps and probably prime it. In the background you can see an rb-66 destroyer but i didn't do an album for the build yet. I did some pics, but the cockpit is the only interior and pretty basic. And because of italeri messing up the decal versions in the manual, i don't know which machine i will build yet. 🙂

Nice work so far David 👍

Thanks alot guys. Not sure if the "smoke blue" came out a little bit to dark, but since i couldn't find any references on the use and the color itself, i had to take a guess. I guess it will change it's effect anyhow, once i apply the upperside olive drab and medium green.

Next will be some smaller areas i will have to paint... the wheel bays and the tail, as well as some touch ups on the underside, where the masking took off some paint. And of course the black band on the fuselage and the wings

Great looking Aircobra, David! The re-riveting really improves the look of the kit. Good job!
12 November 2017, 00:29
David Thor
Thanks Gordon! First time i did the riveting, so i really need to improve on the accuracy.

looking really good, lovely work so far...

Thank you Bart! Gloss varnish coat was applied this morning, maybe i will find some time for the first decals.

Thanks alot Clifford!

Hmmmm. I'm not sure if i should blame it on the colder temperatures, but the gloss clear varnish has seemed to "run down" and collect on the nose and the upper side of the wings. It's now very thick in some parts has some cracks in it. Sanding might be an option to correct this.
14 November 2017, 20:28
David Thor
Noticed that the size and position of the nose art and number are very contradicting in the few informations avaible for this plane as well as the manual of eduard and their decal sheet even. I settled for what looks best with the decals provided. If you want to go for a historic correct version, this version of the kit is not for you i guess.
15 November 2017, 09:39
Erik Leijdens
Looks good to me David. Think most of us won't notice the incorrect noseart. I only see a great P-39 in the making! 👍
20 November 2017, 11:34
David Thor
Thanks Erik. I don't really mind it either, however i feel somewhat obliged to point stuff like that out to others. There a better documented airacobras in the set and they are "more right" if that's important. 😉

Can't wait for the decal medium to settle, really want to go for the weathering.
20 November 2017, 19:32
Martin Oostrom
Decal medium settling, where did I hear that before? 😉
Very nice plane David. Can't wait on your weathering!

Thanks Martin, can't wait myself. 🙁

How is the Eduard Air Cobra kit. I have fancied doing one for some time.
21 November 2017, 23:14
David Thor
It's okay, but no comparison to modern eduard kits. There is no flash or poor detail, what you could expect from an old form. However there are certain things wrong: Not all panels are correct for the different version. There are no landing lights on the underside of the wings and there are no decals for them. Fit on the doors and between wings and fuselage is not great. And as recently mentioned the decals for pepper are not the right size. Not sure about the correctness of other versions of this kit. If you want to do a P-39, go for it. But if you want to get an Eduard kit, maybe pick a newer one.

I was thinking of the new weekend one that they just released.
23 November 2017, 00:05
David Thor
Just had a look at it, and it's the exact same kit. Just with different decals and because it's a weekend edition, there are no resin and pe-parts. Decal options are pretty sweet on the new kit.
23 November 2017, 07:48
David Thor
Added exhaust stains with dilluted vallejo air nato black. Perfect color for that.

Really nice looking P-39 David 😉

Thanks alot Sören!

Soeren R.
You did black basing on this one right?
With what colors did you lighten up some panels on the underside?
25 November 2017, 12:08
David Thor
Yes. On the underside i started with mottled pale blue grey, then dark grey over panel lines. sand yellow and pale blue mottling on the panel lines. sand yellow towards the nose, pale blue towards the rear part of the panels. And then i went over everything with diluted us blue grey.

Just completed her. Content with the result, learned alot during this build. First time rigging material from mig and it's cool. Way easier and better looking than other improvised methods. Better pictures when i have better weather and time to do them. Now it's wondering if i should start a skyhawk or the A7V in my stash. Maybe the wildcat?

Really nice result! 😉

Another winner David. Not seen this Eduard kit before. Are you going to build the other one as well ?
27 November 2017, 14:04
David Thor
Thanks Mike! I already build the other one in the kit already, you can find it in my projects.
27 November 2017, 14:06
Martin Oostrom
She's beautiful. You can be proud of her.
I vote for the A-7
27 November 2017, 14:43
Redcat
Bravo!!! 🙂
27 November 2017, 14:50
David Thor
Thanks Martin and Redcat! Can't start the A-7 before christmas, because i will get some aftermarket stuff for her from my brother then. And with the rb-66 on the bench, i can't pick a kit that requires me to sand stuff. So at the moment i'm stuck between the A-4 (probably blue tail flies version) and Schnuck
27 November 2017, 16:09
Björn Svedberg
That's a really nice p-39 David! 👍
I vote for the wildcat 🙂
27 November 2017, 17:52

Thanks Björn. It really is an option, those hobby boss wildcats are amazing regarding fit and nice details on the surface.

Very nice job on the P-39 David. I agree, I vote for the Wildcat.
