Border Model Bf109 G-6

Album image #1
I have been watching Nigel build his Border Model's JU-56 Stuka on his YouTube channel, and it inspired me to build my Border Model bf109 kit. This is my first time building a Border Model kit, and so far I have really liked it. The plastic is nice to work with, and the fit so far has been great. I have only built up the engine but it has been a pleasure. No problems other than a few parts were label wrong in the instructions. I look forward to the rest of this build.

I painted the engine with Mr. Metal Color dark iron. The chrome is Tamiya X-11, and the yellow is Tamiya X-8 lemon yellow.

This is my first time using Mr. Metal Color. Its pretty cool, you can buff it our with a cotton swab and it makes the edges shiny like dry brushing, but much more subtle and controlled. I also used for the first time Life Color rust washes on the exhaust pipes. I really like the way these came out, and the Life color do not have the bad odor that my AK enamel rust wash's have.

This seam line on the nose is going to kill me.

The interior is painted with Tamiya XF-22 RLM.

Other than the seam on the nose, the two fuselages halves went together really well.

I primed it with Mr. Finnish Surfacer 1500 white.

I have only painted one other German WW2 aircraft and that was a ME263 Komet. I find German aircraft difficult to paint. I used Tamiya Lemon Yellow x-8

I hate masking greatly, but I felt that the yellow came out nice.

Next was the light blue. I used Tamiya light blue XF-23. I have always liked the color Germans painted the bottom of their planes.

This is where I started to take liberties with the color scheme. First, Tamiya does not have the right colors for German aircrafts. Second, I didn't follow the pattern for Erich Hartmann's bf109. I used Tamiya IJN gray-green XF-76 and XF-22 RLM grey. I struggled with the masking and the molting, but I am happy with the overall look.

I heard on YouTube that the decals for this Border Models kit were bad. I think they are great. They are very thin, and lay down great. I used VMS satin finish and they have no silvering, or anything. I am very happy with the these decals.

I had to repaint this nosecone 3 times. I could not get a sharp edge on the tip. I had a hard time getting the masking tape so sit down tight against the lip of the cannon and was getting a soft over sprayed edge. Third times a charm I guess.

Very thin decals that sit on the surface great.

I used a Flory clay wash on this. This was a super easy product to use. I covered the entire thing in this brown sludge and left it to dry over night. The next day I used a damp paper towel to wipe it off, and this was the outcome. I like this stuff, as it super easy and you can just slop it on and not have to be to careful.

I am calling this one done. This was my first Border Models kit, and I enjoyed it. I will be building another Border kit soon.

Thank you. I really enjoyed building this kit. I think Border did a good job, even though I have read about other people not liking this kit, I didn't have any problems with it.
