Here is a warning of a product I have had nothing but trouble with.

I bought a set of AK Interactive colours from their "Air Series", namely RLM74 (AK2007), RLM75 (AK2008), RLM76 (AK2009).

I did so because AK tells you on their website:

"There’s no need to dilute the paints when you decide to use your airbrush."
and
"It can be easily thinned with our specific acrylic thinner or water if necessary."

So, I first tried the colours undiluted. It soon becomes obvious that they are much too thick for this - not really surprising, as they are supposed to be "for Brushes and Airbrush".

I then tried diluting with water. I was unable to find a suitable colour to paint ratio; the paint either remained too thick, clogging my airbrush, or too thin, loosing surface tension and breaking up when spraying.

Next up was trusty old Tamiya X-20A. That made the colour spatter and spit. Same thing with pure alcohol and water/alcohol mixtures.

My biggest amazement came with Mr. Color Levelling Thinner. This actually acted as the opposte of a thinner: it turned the colour into a slimy, rubbery mass!

During these trials, I have wasted hours and cleaned more goo from my airbrush than in nearly 20 years of airbrushing with other colours combined. I tried all 3 colours, they all acted the same. No joy with any thinner known to mankind! It definitely wasn't a problem with the equipment or environmental conditions; in between my trials, I shot Vallejo colours (which can be thinned with all of the above!) with no problem at all.

Am I going to buy AKs "specific acrylic thinner" (AK 712 "Acrylic Thinner"; nearly 5 Euros for 60ml!) now, hoping this will work? Am I going to throw good money after bad and buy more stuff from a manufacturer that lies about the properties of his products? Send your answers on a postcard to AK INTERACTIVE, S.L.!
