This Revell kit dates 1991 I think around that time when Revell made their new models somewhat
more detailed than previous -more detailing parts and for instance recessed panel lines.
I bought this kit in a Hobby Shop in Sweden around 1995 - yes - its nice to find wanted kits in your
own stock... 🙂
At that time -around 1991 SAAB were still in the process on developing the JAS-39 Gripen and Revell
probably got access to the Prototype plans for the Gripen and based this 1:32 scale model upon these
drawings/information.
So comparing the model upon newer drawings, pictures and information on the aircraft -
JAS-39 A and C versions - there is a good possibility to check out if this model/kit is as bad as I have
read about throughout the years.
I found 1:72 scale drawings in the publication : Photo Hobby Manual Nr. 1003 - scanned these and
upscaled to 1:32 scale, printed them and mounted the A4 drawings together.
When comparing the 1:32 scale drawings with the model I could see that everything was not
quite in order. There needed to be made a couple of corrections and this more for the experienced
modeller, but still it could be done.
When checking the model with the 1:32 scale plans I noticed that the problems were sort of the
same all around the model and decided to make new scale plans - and this time in 1:34 scale.
When checking out everything fitted nicely ! So - this is NOT a 1:32 scale model of the SAAB Gripen
but rather a 1:34 scale model !
Can you accept this fact then of course you will have a large scale model of this aircraft.
Conclusion :
In general I'm very fond of Revells models - they are not too detailed letting it up to me as a modeller
to add/remove whatever I want to. Revell has also throughout times made models that no one else
has made and Revells kits are always at an affordable price level.
The Revell 1🙁32) JAS39 Gripen has some shortcomings but nothing that the average MODELLER
can not deal with.
And for Revell... A reissue of this kit could be made as easy as writing 1:34 scale
rather than 1:32 scale as on the original box.
So next for me will be to build this 1:34 scale SAAB Gripen.
