Clifford Keesler Are you trying to start a new Russian Air Force? LOL.
8. August 2015 at 01:23:34
Kevin Farrell It looks that way! The Ruskies could built some pretty and capable aircraft! Not to mention the Flanker's "Cobra strike" Amazing stuff! And they built the Foxbat to chase the Blackbird and did it with conventional engines and fuselage metals. Lockheed used ramjets and titanium. Hey, when you have a blank check and Kelly Johnson's brain - what else would you do?

Clifford Keesler Build the worlds fastest aircraft.

Kevin Farrell Did you know the titanium was essentially smuggled out ou the USSR?
Isn't that a riot?
11. August 2015 at 14:44:10
Clifford Keesler No, I did not know that.

Glenn . That's right! Lockheed with the help of the CIA, Set up a fake company to ship the titanium into the states so they could process it in A-12, YF-12A and of course the SR-71 airframes! :) genius!

Kevin Farrell A "must read" is "Skunkworks" by Ben Rich. Rick took the reins at Lockheed/Skunkworks from Kelly Johnson as Johnson went into semi-retirement. The book is as much about about Skunkworks as it is an insight into the genius of Kelly Johnson.
The book begins with the development of the F-117 Nighthawk. I don't want to spoil it, you need to read it on your own!

Clifford Keesler Ok, I will see if I can find it. Sounds interesting.

J Irwin Hope if it's alright if I jump in with the links below. There's a video on youtube of a presentation on the development of the A-12 Oxcart (and the SR-71). The presentation was held about five years ago at the Smithsonian Natl Air and Space Museum at Dulles. It's about 1h30m, if you have the time.
Among the presenters are people who worked on the development of the A-12, who worked with Kelly Johnson, and who flew the aircraft.
A brief mention of the Russia-titanium connection is at around the 25min mark. They talk a bit longer about how hard it was to work with titanium and explain the corrugation on wing surfaces.
Youtube Video (filmed on site)
Youtube Video (audio only from the NASM's YT channel)

I enjoyed it and recommend it if you're into it.

Clifford Keesler Or should I say listen. LOL.

Kevin Farrell Thanks Jon! If you haven't read the book, there's a story in the beginning about the development of the -117 (before they figured out a way to make it fly!). They had a 1/4 scale mock-up of the plane in profile (largest exposure to radar). The USMC radar operator was blasting it with a zillion watts and couldn't see it back in the radar shack. He told Ben Rich "Mr Rich, I think the model fell off the stand!" Then he said, "disregard, there it is!" What he saw was a sparrow that landed on the model!

J Irwin Well that qualifies as stealth. Just ordered the book on amazon. Looking forward to it.
