Personal Interest: The 174th TFS converted from the F-100 to the A-7D in 1977. This change was immediately evident to me, as the flying activity near my home became even more spectacular. The A-7 was more powerful and fuel efficient than the F-100 and therefore performed much more aggressive maneuvers and longer-lasting missions. In March 1979, a 174th TFS A-7D crashed very near my home, but fortunately the pilot ejected to safety. This event made a big impression on me, highlighting the inherent danger associated with military operations even during realistic training.
Model Specifications: This model represents an A-7D of the 174th TFS as it appeared in 1979 for training missions over the O’Neill MOA, with the SEA camouflage scheme commonly used in Vietnam.
