Nice details.

The gunpod.

Album image #5
Nose landing gear bay will need some additional white coats. It's still too dark.

Album image #6
The engine nozzles.

Album image #7
No project without major or minor screw ups...
I destroyed the decals while trying to apply them... 😭

Album image #8
Here too I damaged the decal and tried to paint part of the front dashboard to "fix" it.
Canopy will be closed on this model.

Album image #9
Mold line on the top side of the canopy. Sanded it down with 2000 sand paper after scraping it with a knife. I believe one should use even finer sandpaper, up to 12000 and more, but 2000 is the best one I have.

Album image #10
After sanding I used Tamiya polishing compounds, from coarse to fine to finish.
It's hard to see on this picture, but the canopy is clear again. It's not perfect but good for my first time.
Still, should have testet it first on some clear part I had to spare.

Album image #11
Intakes and engine part, which are also the legs of this machine.

Album image #12
Cockpit with some light drybrushing.

Album image #13
Landing gear and seats.

Album image #14
Dry fitting some parts. I need to think about what parts I should paint before glueing them together. I fear I won't be able to reach some places if I put everything together first.

Album image #15
More dry fitting.

Album image #16
The intakes are already painted.

Used the wrong decals on the engines, should have used the black ones. The white ones were supposed to be attached to the gun pod.
And I screwed some of them up. I should never lever the decals alone until they are set perfectly.

Looks great! How did you thinned polyurethane varnish?

Thanks, S M. 🙂
I mixed the varnish with tap water, roughly at a ratio 50:50 (tap water : varnish) using a 0,5mm needle an about 1,5 bar pressure.
It sounds really simple now, but it took me quite some time to find the right mixture.
The right needle was also important. Most of the time I used a 0,3mm or 0,2mm for the varnish which I also used for often when applying colours. The varnish was just splattering around.
Instead of thinning it even more I finally got the idea to use another needle, which did the trick.
I suppose it is possible to get an better and more even coat but I am slowly getting there.

Album info

That was an interesting kit from one of my favourite aircraft (mecha) of the Macross franchise.
I made a lot of mistakes and gained some valuable experience working with Tamiya Mark Fit.
Sadly, I screwed up the cockpit, especially the decals of the instruments aaand some other decals but I feel like I finally get the hang of using and thinning Vallejo polyurethan varnish (after one bottle 😄)
