The Black Island (Motorboat)
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/4/5/7/580457-26441-31-720.jpg)
Hey, the box is new!
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/4/6/1/580461-26441-28-720.jpg)
The sprues look the same though.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/4/5/9/580459-26441-45-720.jpg)
Easy to put together. I’m not sawing it in half this time, but it’ll still need some modifications.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/4/5/8/580458-26441-60-720.jpg)
That’s better. I sliced off all the oar locks and the ridge along the stern.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/4/6/0/580460-26441-92-720.jpg)
Now for a bit of putty to smooth out the sanded bits.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/1/4/2/581142-26441-90-720.jpg)
As much as I like the kit parts, time for some scratchbuilding.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/4/0/1/581401-26441-54-720.jpg)
Benches added, ready for some paint.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/5/9/3/581593-26441-15-720.jpg)
The interior has been painted, now to scratch up a motor for the motorboat.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/5/9/4/581594-26441-78-720.jpg)
Starting to come together, but it needs a bit more work.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/9/2/8/581928-26441-55-720.jpg)
Paint on the hull and the outboard motor is more or less complete (just needs the handle).
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/1/8/3/582183-26441-30-720.jpg)
Main painting is done, now to start on the base. First, fill in most of the "mould" with clay...
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/1/8/4/582184-26441-76-720.jpg)
Almost forgot to use Vaseline as a release agent, but just remembered in time. Whew! Now we wait for the silicone to dry.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/9/9/4/582994-26441-26-720.jpg)
Added a few boating accessories... never go out on the water without paddles, a bailing bucket and a bit of rope to tie off. 😉
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/9/9/3/582993-26441-12-720.jpg)
A decal on the prow and a decal on the base... and we're all done!

I must really love this little Zvezda kit, 'cause I'm back for more. I'm not sawing it in half this time, but it'll need a few modifications to look similar to the motorboat from The Black Island.

If I added Tintin figures to every build... that's pretty much all I'd have time to do!
Anyway, thanks guy! It feels almost a shame not to include the kit parts, but at the same time there's more of a feeling of accomplishment in making the build your own. At least I think so.

Main painting completed, including the scratchbuilt outboard motor. I almost forgot to add Vaseline as the release agent for the silicone on the base. That would've been a disaster! Just a few tiny decals and details to add and this little side project will be done! Almost before anyone notices!

I am sure you have said elsewhere, but what are you using for the water?

I'm using household silicone caulking (clear) for the water. Just add a couple of drops of Tamiya acrylic paint, stir and apply. The only real trick is you have to work pretty fast because the silicone starts drying almost instantly. It gets very hard to spread evenly the longer it's out of the tube.

Thanks Lode! It was almost a shame to discard some of the kit parts, but hopefully my scratchbuilt add-one will make it close enough to the original that no one will complain.😉

Really good and clean work Greg.. And like Lode said.. The scratchwork is amazing 👍
Very convincing result so far.

Thanks Daniel. It was a fun little distraction build... I have to say, I am quite proud of how the scratched up 1/72 scale outboard motor turned out. That surprised even me~ There's a couple of close-up final pics and even in them it doesn't look half bad (and they ALWAYS look bad close up!)
