4. SS Polizei Panzer Grenadier Division

In 1933, all German police units were organized under NAZI control. In 1936, 15,000 men were transferred to form a uniformed Polizei Division of uniformed Police. In 1939, these men were equipped as occupation troops along the lines of an Infanrty Division. There was no SS affiliation as of yet and the division was issued few motorized vehicles. October 1939 saw the division serving in Poland's occupation.
In 1940, The Polizei Division was attached to Army Group C. Held in reserve until June 9, the Polizei fought French forces near the Ardennes Canal and in the Argonne Forest.After the French surrender, Polizei took up occupational duties in Burgungy, Paris and other parts of France.
Operation Barbarosa found the Polizei Division in reserve of OGN until August 1941 when they got into to a hard fight at Luga taking 2000 casualties. Following this they were sent to the Leningrad sector during the winter of 1941/42. The Polizei Division remained at the siege of Leningrad until mid 1943. It was in April 1943 the Status of Waffen SS was given to the Polizei Division and re-organization to a Panzer Grenadier Division was undertaken.
4. SS Polizie was transferred in July 1943 to Greece in an anti-partisan campaign withdrawing to Romania in September 1944. Further retreating to Hungary, the Division was sent to Prussia in January 1945 where they were cut off and bypassed by Soviet forces driving into Eastern Germany. The Division was rescued by sea and fought on the Oder front North of Berlin. Retreating Westward to the Elbe River, The 4. SS Polizei surrendered to Allied Forces on VE Day.
