Welcome mates. Yes, I thought I need sth quick to recover my mojo - so I started two 😄 Spit & Jelcz.
Why Syrian? Cause there's only one photo known and I can interpret it the way it's faster 😄
Unless Marius pops up here and corrects me 😉

Wilkommen 🙂 Ended the main assembly on day 3 😄
The undercarriage and canopy will be added after painting. The fit is great except for the mid inlet on the underside - the slot is bigger than the assembly and requires some filling.

Hello again Lukasz

since you asked about the colours, I would be glad to repeat my message here for everyone to see, in case there are more people interested.

So I personally didn't manage to find exact information about the colours on the Spitfires, but the following indirect information can be of help: the Syrian T-6 Harvards were already camouflaged during the Israeli Independence War (1948) and I strongly believe the Spitfires were painted in the same colours.
Check this link regarding the Harvards:
luftwaffeas.blogspot..merican-t-6.html?m=1
The author of that known blog is a Syrian passionate about the SyAAF history sharing so far pretty reliable and rare pieces of information. There are further black and white photographs of those Syrian Harvards, such as:

In my opinion, judging by the black and white photographs of the Hardvards and based on the known information regarding early SyAAF colours, that color profile of the Harvard from the first link should be fairly close to reality. My objection is that brownish color, which is way too dark. Instead, only one such color was known to have been used by the SyAAF in that period: the Orange-Sand. For the orange sand check this extremely rare photograph of a Syrian MiG-17 from the early 70's.

From the photo of the MiG-17 you can also use the underside colour as reference, but NOT the green. The green colour from the Spitfires and Harvards was an Olive Drab-Dark Green.
Overall, all colors on the Syrian Spitfires should be close to identical to this example of mine of an early Syrian MiG-21PFM from the War of Attrition:

MiG-21PFM - Syria - 1973 | Album by Redicus (1:72)

Be aware of the correct insignia for the Spitfires, the one with roundels having the green contour and 3 red stars.

And by the way, that art work you used as cover for your project is surprisingly correct in terms of colours (the underside is maybe too blueish). Where did you find it?

Welcome Alec & SM!
Marius, many thanks for sharing your awesome expertise. I was hoping the AZ boxart could be a template for a quickbuild and I'm more than happy to see it makes sense 😄 👍
Which is not that obvious as usually boxarts and paint schemes OOB are not so much reliable 😄

Nice to see you here mate! 👍
I'm impatient enough to start the colour experimentations - first round is AMT-11 by Hataka mixed 2:1 with Insignia White

I think I found the underside colour I was looking for - Gris Bleu Calir is the answer.
Marius, I added the decals to the last pic, planning to use the parts of it to create my own numbering.

Main colours done! Not 100% happy with the colour demarcation and managed to add couple of scratches to be corrected too.

Camo looks really good, Łukasz. Do not be to harsh to yourself 😉

I experimented with 'painting" the Neo Mask or whatever it's called (by Gunze), but I'm disappointed. The places where I used vinyl/kabuki masking look better.
Gonna go back to BluTack or try the odd putty from AK or MrPaint.

Added the one&only reference pic we all have - can anyone spot any roundel on the wing topside?

CAmo looks great.
Roundels on upper wing panel? It does'nt really look like having one....

Have you tried using Panzer putty or ammo putty for demarcation? It really works well!

Hello again Lukasz,

regarding the wing markings/roundels, that photograph you are using as reference represents a derelict Spitfire photographed at some point in the 70's, long after retirement. Several of these Spitfires were aligned outside and abandoned at one airport (I need to check the literature for the location). They were left almost one decade to the mercy of the elements. I am not surprised you can't discern much on the wings, since probably the bad picture quality, angle and definitley worn-out contrasts are not helping. I have never heard of SyAAF aircraft without markings on the wings. They are known to be applied since the very beginning (check again this Syrian Harvard from 1948:

I would definitely apply the roundels on the wings. Both sides (upper and lower).

As for masking, I know other people have different opinions, but I would personally never cover my model in some latex masks. You don't have full control of thickness/coverage from the first shot and you never know what nasty surprises you get after removal: (oily/greasy surface or even chipped off paint). The so called BluTack or camo putty is worth it only if you have extremely thin or small camouflage snakes or dots (in my opinion), or for strongly irregular geometries (like tanks, etc.). Otherwise I see no reason why one shouldn't use Kabuki masking paper for aircraft models. You need to cut and prepare the paper, might take a bit longer, but it's the safe way with garantueed positive results.

@Alex: that's gonna be the quickbuild year, my new year resolution
@Djordje: on my shopping list, will try soon 👍

Hi Marius
For some reason I missed your post until today 🙁 I assume that since the roundels are very distinct on the fuselage, they would stay on wings too - both places being exposed to the sun.
I don't think they followed the regulations that strictly 😉
Additionally - as I managed to damage one of the roundels beyond repair, I skipped the topside as a result, hope we all can live with that.

Many thanks mates, I hope I can present the finished project latest on the weekend.
A, this is a mix of :
- Smoke MRP-271 Clear Smoke, MR.Paint , Acrylic Lacquer, 30ml
- and Exhaust Soot MRP-180 Exhaust Soot, MR.Paint Matt, Acrylic Lacquer, 30ml
I didn't mix the paints themselves, I just sprayed some smoke, than found out it's too translucent just to find out out exhaust soot gets much darker than expected when varnished 😄
Cannon smokes contain more smoke than soot, exhaust ones have opposite proportions.
24 March 2023, 08:30
Łukasz Gliński
Perhaps the way I spray it matters too - I try to simulate the way it works in reality, so:
- I start very close to the cannon/exhaust
- then I move along, the way I think the air fluctuates
- as I move along I also keep lifting up the nozzle gradually, so the paint is sprayed wider and in thinner layers.
I repeat this process as long as I can see satisfying results. In this case cannons and the backside of the main undercarriage took about 4-5 layers, while the exhausts took about 3x more (might be too much 😉)

Today was the rollout time! After the recent sandstorm it was a bit cloudy and some sand was still left on the apron, but I proceeded with the photo session anyway 😉
Thank you for staying tuned 👍 and your support!
