That looks cool, how did you get that effect? I have a couple of Stang's.

Hehe thanks guys, It was done in a very simple way.. burnt sienna oil paint.. and coarse hair brush.
Apply oil and with the brush drag it along letting it make the pattern.

Got ya, thanks.

Yeah it sounds simple and was oddly simple to do, I was surprised.

I spent the day filling Ejector pin marks on that old Hawk T-33 kit. Man I have never seen so many, almost every part has at least one or two. Funny how we did not pay any attention to them when we were kids. The kit is almost as old as I am. LOL.

Lol, hey you want a nightmare.. this p-51.. a 1971 kit.. so older than I by 8 years. It really shows its age
20 April 2019, 08:56
Augie
And its onhold... missing major part so waiting on news from airfix as to spare availability

I don't mind such an old kit, if it is sold as such. Ancient box so it's easily recognised as old, not in a fancy box like this one
21 April 2019, 16:58
Augie
Yeah thats an issue with airfix.. that an in this instance missing parts

Well that stinks. Yes I was surprised when I ordered my first Tamiya Sea Harrier FRS-1, the box looked nice so thought I was getting a modern kit. Man was I surprised when I opened the box and found the raised panel lines and all the fit issues. Airfix Sea Harrier the same way. Fancy new box, old kit. They should have to put on that fancy box somewhere that it is not a new kit. Though like Martin, I don't mind building old kits. I guess I enjoy the challenge of making them look nice, like the Stuka I just finished, that is an old kit in a new box, but I knew that going into it.

I agree with ya Clifford, the spit I did was the same (1963 the moulds date from) so they can be fun, this one has just worn badly.

That is to bad, hopefully AirFix will be able to replace the missing part.

hopefully, so will return to the pile of shame and dust off a yak

What parts are missing?
22 April 2019, 01:57
Augie
Missing part number 107, which is the fillet that goes on the underside for the air intake exhaust. Its about an inch wide, half inch tall and would go width wise across the back end.

The attached link is a pic I found on the net of a half built one with the part..

Regarding the 'old kit/new box' issue, Scalemates database has proved its worth many a time for me. I do get a bit fastidious over new box art in particular - and when I do get caught out, darn sure I update the database if I can! Good luck with the missing part Augie (attached link to pic of missing part does not appear to have worked, otherwise I might have had a go at knocking something up for you!) 🙂

Hi Derek, I knew this was going to be a beast, Most of airfix's 1/24 kits have seen better days in regards to the molds. Only the 'Squito, Tiffy and Hellcat are new moulds.

As for the part, its ok I am sure airfix will have a spare somewhere, I mean its the same damn kit as what they did the P-51K from so I should imagine there are some kicking around.

If not, its a fleabay job and get one cheap as donor.

Augie - In 1/24, only ever built the Spit (when it first came out - real biggie Xmas present at the time!) - 'built' being a relative term, as in those distant days they were pretty much just slapped together (I shudder as I remember!!). Now gone to that big spares-box in the sky (with so many others)! The Mossie I coveted, the Tiffy looked great and the Hellcat looks very promising - sadly, any 'hanger space' for 1/24 ran out a long time ago, but I still get to enjoy them vicariously through the fine work of you and others. 👍 🙂

Hehe thanks Derek, The 1/24's are for me fun mojo rebuilders.. even when I have to beat the things with sandpaper and files to get them looking ok
22 April 2019, 12:49
Clifford Keesler
I have been beating a T-33 with sandpaper all morning, my finger tips are numb. LOL. Should not be surprised with a 1950's vintage kit.

I've been sanding the window sills. Wanna trade places?
22 April 2019, 17:38

All mine need done also. Crap I need to paint the whole house, maybe this fall. It was 86 degrees here yesterday. 58 today, wish it would make up it's mind.

Was cold again today. Got all the putty sanded off the T-33 today. Maybe primer tomorrow.

Augie, I'm gonna slip in, if I may? I have an urge for a Mustang, so I'd like to see and hear, how things go? I'm kinda hoping that you're going to keep it a Redtail? Once I discovered the story behind those amazing airmen, I was hooked. I've already done the Spit, 109 and Hurricane, so I kinda know what you're up against.

Thanks chaps 🙂

Bozzer, More than happy to share what the kits like, I can give you first impressions later today after work.

So.. The kit..

I have two on the go, one is a 1973 issue, the other is 2018 or so. The difference in plastic is profound, the 1973 is a much harder plastic, more brittle but sound.

Now, the molds have held up well, I can interchange parts between the two without issue, however the fit is typical 60's airfix.. so shonky..everything needs fitting and adjusting. Panel lines are soft but distinct, rivets are oversized but not overly raised.
Cockpit detail is ok, about on par with their 1:24 spit but it needs help.
There is an issue with the dihedral in the wings and I will have to let you know how that sorts when I come to fix the wings.

Watching with interest …
🧐 At first I thought this would be very big with 24nd scale, but since it's a propeller it's probably more like a 32nd scale jet 🤔
27 June 2022, 10:45
Bozzer
Roland, I have never done a 1/32 jet, but I can confirm that the wingspan is around 19" or 480mm, roughly. The fuselage is around 15" or 380mm. I'd love to see a Lancaster, in the same scale? Definitely cheaper than having a wife 🙂
27 June 2022, 19:23
Roland Revolvermann
Thanks Bozzer for the information 👍 Ok, 380mm is more of a 1:48 jet 🙂
