On the 13th June 1942 the British position at Gazala began to crumble along the line as Rommel continued his assault . By the end of the day, the British tank strength had been reduced from 300 tanks to about 70 and the Afrika Korps had established armour superiority and a dominating line of positions. The following day the British started to withdraw east towards Egypt in what became known as the "Gazala Gallop"
The intention is to depict Rommel and some of the vehicles / men that would have been around him as he made the decisions that affected the outcome of the battle. Included are his Mammut "Moritz", his Sd.Kfz.250/3 "Greif", a Sd.Kfz.251/1 from his Command Group, a Sd.Kfz 222 and a Sd.Kfz 223 belonging to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion of the 21st Panzer Division, a Horch Kfz.15 of the 200th Signals Battalion and a number of motorcycle sidecar units also from the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion.
When not brought together for the purposes of this diorama, the individual vehicles will be displayed separately as stand alone vignettes.
