I've been waiting for this kit to appear on Scalemates. You've done a great job with it, but the addition of some figures would really be the icing on the cake. The question is, has anyone made any 1:35 Japanese airmen or naval figures to go with it?

Very very impressive! Chapeaux! And there are pilots for sale @1:35, John. For instance Royal Model

Thanks everyone! This has been one of the most enjoyable builds I have done out of a few dozen completed. The level of detail in the kit was great, very good fit, and the mix of subjects(ship/aircraft) is fun. I'm working on figures now, the ones from Border, as well as flags for the mast, and bomb carts for the decks. Plus continuing to hone the weathering. I plan on taking better photos once the final touches are on

The airframe sagging is so realistic! Everything on this build is perfect - John is right, figures would round this out completely!
There should be a good bit to choose from like Reskit - reskit-models.com/sc..kits?product_id=5168

@duperscale The build was very good overall. Great fit, decent instructions, amazing level of detail. My only complaint was the lack of painting guidance in the plans, but that may be driven by the fact that there isn't a whole lot of information out there on the Kate, as there are only scraps of those planes left. I ended up doing a lot of searching online for images of what's left, it's hard to find color images that aren't false color or poorly color corrected. Also I wish they had included the rolled up mattresses used as shrapnel protection on the bridge, I've thought about making my own little rolled up fabric rolls out of some super fine fabric. Anyhow, only my second time doing a diorama, but now I'm hooked

Oh my. That skin is FANTASTIC! Real stunner, Sir! Makes me want to bin my 1/48 build... WOW.

I found out pretty quickly that because of the stress skin and raised rivets, that pre-shading everywhere may not be the right approach for this. The skin is more or less real(though the ailerons and stabilizer fabric may be a bit too loose). Instead I went for durable layers just like the real aircraft and then abrasion. Very minimal preshading or washes were only used on the underside and tail where stains would tend to be.
