RX-78-2 Gundam with LEDs

Album image #1
The front head piece was too thick to safely cut the eyes open, so I recasted the head and cut the visor open, put back to the mold and filled the visor with transparent resin. Then glued two yellow SMD leds inside the head.

Album image #2
I recasted the sword with transparent resin and while casting I put purple SMD led inside. I burned two leds and had to make the sword several times again. I had also problems with the resin as I didn't care to bake it afterwards and some became pretty soft.

Its a long lasting project as the Reichenberg in the picture was completed a while ago. The head is almost complete and legs have got the white primer.

Motivational assembly and it is working! Some paints need to be fixed and some parts are missing (shield, gun, backpack).

Album image #5
Shield fits and this will be probably the final pose. Due the COVID-19 I had to abandon this club room in my University and move to my 1-room apartment.

Album image #6
Finally got a rainy day when my apartment is not hot as hell, so I tried my new air brush settings. The shield now has the main colors. I made the bullet holes and hits with a hot needle and knife.

Album image #7
I can declare the shield ready. Aged with acrylics and oil paints. Vallejo's matt varnish on top.

Album image #8
I got decals set. Next wil be panel wash and weathering. A patform needs to be made also.

Album image #9
The gun and the backpack have paint decals too. The gun will be just lying on the platform because hands are taken by the saber and the shield.

Album image #10
Panel lines done and weathering under progress. First dry brushing some metallic paint, then rust and lastly oilpainting some grime.

Album image #11
I finally started doing the platform. Main material is black Fimo mass and I just improvised it around the battery back. Gundam model would prefer a flat surface, so I would make a remnant of a floor from some packaging plastic. It will take inspiration from the space fortress A Baoa Qu in the end of One Year War on December 31, UC 0079.

Album image #12
The platform needed some kit and other details. Finally I added the floor onto the asteroid with milliput.

Album image #13
After the milliput dried the platform got painted in one day. Here it has black primer, white airbrushed from above and floor has silver paint

Album image #14
I got to test a chipping fluid for the first time in the floor part. Other weathering was pretty basic compared to Gundam includig wash with panel line accent color, drybrushing and applying Tamiya Weathering master stuff.

Album image #15
Almost ready! The connector needs to be glued into the platform and Gundam ensures that the connector is in the right position. I'm using green stuff for that.

Very cool! What casting materials are you using?

I'm using Sylmasta G26 polyurethane casting resin and Pébéo Gédéo Crystal Resin for transparent parts. Molds are casting silicon and/or blue stuff.

Wow! Now that's how it's done. The eyes and sword are fantastic, and the decals really make a lot of difference. Great weathering and base. What else can I say? When I get around to finishing my Gundam kits, I will remember your awesome build!

Album info

Bought the First Grade Gundam and was disappointed on its opaque light sword, so i decided to brighten this up with LEDs: one to the sword and one to its eyes. To make it possible I got to test casting techniques.
