Thanks Sören and Erik! I am really pleased with how this one turned out. Before I started this project I knew very little about this aircraft, but after research and building this I have really grown to love this overlooked jet that is the big brother of the Phantom.

Beautiful as ever from your desk mate! It's not often you see a Demon among other more popular birds to build but I like it. How was the kit to build? I've heard that it's a kit that fights the builder.

excellent paint job, congratulations!

Thanks Urban and Spanjaard! Urban, the kit really was not bad at all. I had a little difficulty around the cockpit, nosegear bay, and intakes, but other than that it was really rather painless. It is a bit of a long build, but overall rather straightforward.

Thanks mate, sounds like an ordinary kit then.

Awesome job Michael, I love it. I started the TomCat today, I plan on black basing it, what color would you recommend for the marble coat? It is going to be Gull Gray over White undersides.

Thanks James, Dave, Ulf, Torben, and Forest! I really appreciate your compliments! Christian, thanks for the compliment... I must say, your Vf-64 GP F3H was a real inspiration for me on this project. I studied pictures of your model for quite a few things that I wanted to do on mine.

Thank Clifford! I am looking forward to seeing your progress on the Tomcat. This Demon is the same scheme as you are doing (GG over White), and I did straight white on the black.

Thank you. I will get some pictures up soon. The black primer is drying on the Viper, so will start paint tomorrow.

Fantastic build, Michael! Not my Topic but wonderful executed! But your black-White preshading is not so visible as on your beautiful Tomcat. Didnt you wanted such an effect on this one?
29 September 2016, 14:47
Michael Phillips
Thanks Roberto and Holger! Holger, yes, I purposefully made that effect less noticeable on this one. US Navy aircraft in the Gloss Gull Gray over White scheme did not wear nearly as bad as the later TPS colors did, as was on the Tomcat (Overall Dark Gull Gray, in that instance). So I was cognizant to put down more basecoat white and gray to make the effect show through a bit less.

Looks absoluty adoreable though! Those slight effects are not easy to archieve!

Actually, if an aircraft had a Glossy appearance during that time, that WAS wear in the paint. Before 1972, they were NS on top, which wore to a Glossy between NARF trips.

Here are the 1/1 facts about our paint scheme. Post #6 addresses the color schemes in use and the dates, that include "flat Light Gull Gray" and "Glossy Light Gray"

Keep in mind that I am not commenting on your model, just your statement. And that anyone is free to work with or without this info on their own models, whichever they choose. I am just providing info for something that is often confused in online discussions.

The wear that Rex means explained : due to smal particals off sand and other debris in the air, during flight the aircraft gets a sort off mirco-sanding wich makes the paint to gloss up.

For the rest: a color is influenced by first it's primer and second by the brilliance off the varnish ( matt, semi, gloss).

Ever tried to touch up a varnish model and wondering why it's visible although it's the same paintjar that you initially used

Rex
Well, Germen, you are right in your primer statement. That is if you are talking about models getting painted, or talking about different 1/1 air forces. The primer didn't influence US military aircraft all that much though. In Navair and USAF, the same Zinc Chromate was used under the relatively thick Poly-Urethane paints for decades and decades. (Phantoms had the same primer as Hellcats, for example)
