1999 Moonbase

This is the Alpha Moonbase upside down. It is in four quarters to fit in the box, vacuformed in large sheets. The joining edges need to have the flanges cut off where they should mate. Leave the outer flanges in place to assist in mounting the moonbase when done. DO NOT cut the butting edges, only the flanges. The 4 pieces fit one way, but you can misaligns them. Once I got them correct, I labeled the edges as shown. Just to insure I did not screw up!

The base flipped right side up. Note the discoloration of the seams from use the PVC pipe primer and cement. Hopefully this will be hidden by putty and primer. You can see the discarded plastic sign that will be a more solid base to give it support.

This shows the moonbase atop a discarded honeycombed plastic sign, which will give the model some stiffness which it certainly needs. This view is "edge on" to the base and sign.

Back at it - (why the delay? Beats me...) Filled a seam with Milliput, note seam at right. Didn't really work the way I wanted. Went to baking soda fill with super glue/CA/Cyano as binder. Had "microballoons" to use if baking soda did not work. Appeared to have worked, but the regular super glue was a PITA use for this test. Got some "thin" super glue at the local hobby shop (mainly radio control stuff) That worked a real treat. Due to the nature of the beast. I think there may be some voids I missed, but next I lay down some structure so I can prime the base and go back. At this scale would a sandy texture rough looking primer look like regolith? I will find out. (Oh - beware, thin super glue likes to bond your skin WAY more than regular CA. (LOL!)

Laying in the Base Buildings, checking fit and location. Very faint numbers on the bottom of each part, so I put the number on with Sharpie, and again on the base itself, where the "flat spot" is for location, making sure not to write where it might bleed through the paint to follow. Just to insure I don't glue them down to the wrong spot. Some of the "tunnels" will go atop seams, so that is one way to hide them !

About to finally putty / fill the seams - should be quick then I can prime. I was going to use Aves Epoxy Putty, but decided it was too stiff for that, so I got some of their paste recently.

I too am scratching my head wondering why I haven't made any progress on my build, but may I suggest that you use drywall joint compound mud for filling in gaps? It's dirt cheap, and easily cleaned up with water, and you can get great texture by dabbing it with a stick, like playing with your mashed potatoes. As far as simulating lunar regolith, I was planning on using finely sifted tile grout to achieve a very powdery surface. This idea is unproven though.
