Launched in 1910 SM U9 was an petroleum-electric boat and the first of its class (U9 - U12). With the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy) she operated in the North Sea as well as in the Baltic Sea. in 1919 she was wrecked in UK. She was awarded the Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross) as one of two ships in WWI. Famous Kapitänleutnant Otto Weddigen took command from 1911 10th Oct until January 1915. In october 1914 he was awarded the Pour le Mérite, the highest royal Prussian order of bravery.
