Great Corsair! How did you the chipping on the wings?

Hi Mid_Franconian, thanks for the kind comments. The chipping is done in a couple of stages. Chromate Yellow goes down first where the chipping will be, then I used Airfix Maskol liquid masking fluid (other suppliers are available) and applied that carefully with the corner of some sponge to get a rough pattern on the edges of parts that might get scratched. Then I put the base colours down via airbrush and once dry, rub off the maskol with a pencil rubber. At that stage I had a bit more chipping than I wanted so in truth I went in with a small paint brush and the base colours to 'fill in' some of the chipping so it wasn't over done. The hand painted dabs ended up being a very slight shade different from the airbrush coat so it had the effect of a slightly patchy appearance. This was then finished off using a tiny bit of AK Pigments European Earth to lighten areas of high wear.

I'm asking this question on a couple of project pages - do you just eyeball the blues transition on the fuselage or is there a pattern I should follow? I'm just priming mine at halfway through the build. Yours looks great - I won't weather mine as much but I've seen some things I might try if I feel brave!

Hi Brian, sorry i haven't responded right away. On this one I eyeballed the transition between the blues, with pictures of the aircraft to hand on my phone. I think there was a little bit of variation on where the patterns were on aircraft, and without research I wouldn't know why. It might be factory painting changes, or some respraying in theatre. I worked light colours to dark. I did get some overspray on the lighter colours as I went so went back in carefully with those colours at a lower pressure. Another way to avoid some of that is to put blu-tac sausages or similar along the demarcation line, but a tiny bit away from the line you want. They will act as a barrier to overspray. You could achieve something similar by holding a piece of card in the way, but 2/3mm away from the plane, but that requires two hands so the model has to be positioned well in a hold or some sort. Hope that helps, and good luck with your build!

Jeepers no apology needed - within the day is pretty good result for my query! 🙂
Thanks for getting back, appreciate the technique hints - I've only used my airbrush (one of the battery types) for solid colours to now, so it might be an interesting challenge! Masking will be a whole new area for me - the blutac sausages is an idea I'll gladly take.

Album info

The Tamiya kit built pretty much from the box. Kit's world decal seatbelts used. The canopy is the F4U-1D type, as the proper one from the kit was....accidently trodden on and irreparably damaged.
