Scalemates Schwalbe Group build 2021

Album image #1
Dry-fitting the tub. Goes together like a dream

Album image #2
Priming: AK Primer and Micro Filler

Album image #3
Using Alclad Aluminium and Duralinium for the bare metal surfaces.

Album image #4
Primed, Future to gloss coat, and then decals.

Album image #5
Cannons done. Tamiya gunmetal, and some AK washes.

Album image #6
Album image #7
And fitted to the supplied nose-weight.

Album image #8
After the Alclad had dried used the Ammo Heavy Chipping, dried for 15 mins, and then top coats of Ammo RLM66

Album image #9
Once dry. Activate the chipping with water and scratch it up. Used the AK pencils for the weathering. Dark Earth and Dust. Sealed in Vallejo Matt Varnish.

Album image #10
Bit of leather for the seat pad. Not sure if that works but might persevere with it.

Album image #11
Wiring the panel. Stripped out some copper threads from an electric lead and some 0.3 fuse wires.

Album image #12
Tub done...

Album image #13
...and from the rear.

Album image #14
Nose wheel also ‘chipped’ bit hard to see with the lighting.

Album image #15
Progress so far. Started filling in the ejectors marks before I realised they’re so carefully placed they can’t be seen when closed up, so abandoned.

Album image #16
All zipped up. This kit is awesome.

Album image #17
Disaster. In my rush to close it up forgot to use the harness decal. So to copy Martin here’s a fictional backstory. “After taking possession the RAF test pilot decided the existing German harness was a bit worse for wear, and so had it replaced. The only thing to hand was an RAF harness from a an old Wellington undergoing refit.”😄

Album image #18
Nose weight doing it’s job. It’s a nice touch that it’s supplied.

Album image #19
Album image #20
Loving the bare metal innards. Just a bit of weathering using AK washes and pencils.

Album image #21
Covers off the port engine. Aires Kit. Not the most conventional wiring but followed as closely as my skills allow.

Album image #22
AK Black base for the engine and various covers and nozzle from right side.

Album image #23
Airbrushed Revell Steel. Then dry brushed to highlight. Used Tamiya weathering powder for a wash on the rear parts to show heat burnish. And the did both nozzles adding burnt sienna and black oils. Matt clear to dampen down the oils.

Album image #24
Going to be using Ammo Chipping effects and so prep with a NMF over a black base. Used AlcladII aluminium with some duralinium shading. Might be too subtle to affect the next coats as a preshade so I’ll wait and see.

Album image #25
Started with the paint options testing on the stabilisers. Using Ammo RLM82/81 combo. But the Brown-violet looks too violet to me. Anyone have experiences with these colours. Can I tone it back with post shading?

Album image #26
Carried on with the fuselage and wings. I’ve figured I’ll tone down the violet with some post shading and washes. Still a few squiggly lines to blend in around the patches.

Album image #27
Bits of overspray mean I’ll Alclad the port wing again to test the chipping effects from Ammo under the camo.

Album image #28
Album image #29
Some chipping effects. The wing effect is using the Ammo chipping fluid. The fuselage is me scratching it up (not as happy with that). The inspection covers are a dark aluminium AK pencil.

Album image #30
Made the mottling more dense to cover my failed scribbling attempt. Decals and stencils on, used some old Print Scales from the Vultee for the RAF rondels.

Album image #31
The wing decals seem to have struggled into the panel lines but this on the fuselage is great.

Album image #32
Homemade stencil for the ‘yellow 7’ and patch over the tail marking. Had to cobble together the w.nr digits might have to go back to that of weather them so it makes no difference.

Album image #33
The RAF ground crew at Lübeck starting to assemble to inspect the surrendered Me262 when it arrives. Base coat on. Detail, Shading and skin tones to follow.

Album image #34
Going to have to work on my skin tones this WAAF looks like she’s been holidaying in the sun for a month. Also the dog in the ICM set is meant to be an Irish Setter, I think. But as we’re in Germany the crew have adopted a long-haired Pointer on the base.

Album image #35
Back on track having reapplied decals to rectify my schoolboy error. Citroen Staff Car also being commandeered by the base staff. 😄

Album image #36
Prepping to test a filter to tone down that violet.

Album image #37
Used a very thinned mix of brown-violet and dark green to try and tone down and blend across the whole model. Reasonably happy and don’t want to go too far.

Album image #38
Gloss overnight to prep for washes.

Album image #39
Just playing around with scenarios for a diorama.

Album image #40
Album image #41
Album image #42
Album image #43
Album image #44
Still some dry brushing and shading on the figures.

Album image #45
Still weathering to do on the bird itself.

Thanks Roland, I'm still finding my way a bit but enjoying 1:48 scale. Your comments are really appreciated coming from someone with your skill and experience. 👍

Great to see this first(?) delve into quarter scale is to your liking, also noting the a/markets will pop those details out for you!

Thanks Andy. Yes first go on 1:48. Have a lovely looking CyberHobby BF110 to do too. Still a lot of 1:72 in the stash though, so not completely over to the other side just yet. 👍

Great work! Nice Schwalbe

Thanks Juergen, James, and Erik. I was going to try do some scribbles between the dots but had to forget that as my airbrush skills are not good enough. Anyway a look back at my reference and I realised it's quite dense mottling that's required so I've gone back to that. Pics to follow as soon as I finish the other wing too.

It's coming along very nicely! You were right, it does look similar from from the Hobby Kit. Especially details wise.

French rondels for RAF aircraft ?????
French use Vultee

Thanks Julien. Eagle eyes. I hadn't even noticed I used the wrong set from an old Vultee model, I had a niggling doubt something was wrong but couldn't put my finger on it. Schoolboy mistake. Thanks for pointing it out. Back to the workshop for a decal overhaul I guess. 👍

Tips on decal removal anyone?
6 May 2021, 10:40
Andy Ball
Gary, I'm a bit ham-fisted on these issues, but a nice sharp scalpel or wooden toothpick?...I assume the RAF roundel will be same size or bigger than the French one it replaces, so a little loss of your excellent paintwork wouldn't present an issue?

A bit of masking tape over the top should lift them right off 🙂 👍

You can put it in water or at leat put a water soaked cotton ball over the decal. After a while the sticker is "wet" too. Try to get under the film with a sharp blade and as soon you have lifted it you should be able to pull it off. I was successful with that method.

Looking good 🙂

Thanks Guy. I'm glad Julien called out my error before I'd gone any further though.
Thanks Andy, James, Juergen- I've managed to cover the fuselage with a slightly larger RAF decal- it has softened well enough to see the inspection hatch still and so am happy with that. I'm going to try and lift the upper and lower wing decals this weekend. Fingers crossed. 👍

Back on track having rectified my decal error. Still need to put the exposed Jumo back in place and then on to washes and weathering.

Looking good. Great to hear you were able to resolve the decal issue. 👍
