The parts do indeed look promising, I look forward to seeing the progress 👍

😬!
This is the way!

Of course looking forward to this one 👍🏻

Treehugger
Nearly 34 cm long, that is impressive for a Star Wars model I think.

Interesting Roland, following 👍

Roland Revolvermann
Yes, this is the way Konrad LOL
Welcome Torsten, Konrad, Treehugger and Guy.
This kit surprised me very positively, because I actually expected a loveless, overpriced Star Wars license from Revell. I hope now that it fits as well as it looks.
I'll start right away, because Mando and child are already waiting impatiently

Nice Lego figures Roland! Have the same too😬

One of the best SW Revell kits imho! Looking forward to your progress.

Welcome Dash!
Konrad, Unfortunately for my wallet, I didn't just buy this Mando / Child Lego set this year LOL

I'm currently painting the cockpit and can clearly say that Revell apparently didn't research the colors at all or they are simply color-blind. OK, it's SCI-FI but that colors in the manual OMG .... 😄

Simon Nagorsnik
Nice project!
For sure, i follow!
21 December 2021, 09:01

Welcome Simon! 🙂

Did a test shot with Tamiya XF-18 MEDium Blue (for the interior) and I think "This is the way" 😄

Got mine the other day (along with the Outland TIE) so am very eager to see how you go with this one Roland. For science fiction kits I rarely use kit colour guides, always go with screen grabs and make my own decisions...sounds like it will be the same here then! *Really* looking forward to doing the weathering on this beast

Oh watching! 🙂
Chipping already on the decals, interesting.

Welcome mates 🙂
@WhiteGlint Yes, I'm excited to see how the decals will look on the model.
The first parts are painted. After the gloss varnish has dried, the weathering starts.

Hi! That's a great start Roland! I'm very close to pulling the trigger on this one... can I ask how the texture of the plastic is?? On the promotional shots it looks very rough, but I'm wondering if it's because they just used a very poor metallic paint.
28 December 2021, 23:18
Gary Kitchen
Hi Roland. Great start. Got mine unboxed too, I'll be following along like a padawan. Lesson One: be mindful of your surroundings…I was going to blindly follow the colour guide. Rethinking that now 🙂

great start, will be watching 😉

Black Baron
Looking good. What metal paint are you thinking of using?
31 December 2021, 14:21
Roland Revolvermann
Hello, welcome and thanks mates 😄

@Stephen The surfaces are normally smooth as usual at Revell. There's just a bit much flesh for a new tool IMHO. The model built on the cover does indeed look a bit strange in terms of the metallic finish. I think that's because only Revell colors are allowed to be used in the construction. But that's just my guess. And here the metallic range is very poor or not available.

@Gary The painting instructions are very strange, especially with regard to the interior color. This is of course always a bit difficult to get right with a fictional spaceship, but here Revell is completely wrong. But I don't stick to the series either, but rather use graphics as a guide. So my painting will also be a personal interpretation. Looking forward for your build!

@Black Baron I am planning a mix of different metal colors from the AK wax colors (True Metal Series). Let's see if it works 😄
31 December 2021, 17:34
Stephen G
@Roland Thanks for that! I'm currently nearly done with Revell's new Blackbird, and I would say the same - for such a modern tooling, they still have some work to do on the quality of their casting. It's a pity, their kit design is clearly improving, but the factory is letting them down...

Very interested to see what you do with the AK True Metals. I use them a lot for small areas and small parts, so very interested to see how they look over an entire model.

Welcome Christian and Zsolt 🙂
After some wash and weathering I assembled the first parts. The fit was okay except the cargo space. I'm still struggling with that at the moment.

Torsten
This looks great, maybe you could add the colors used to your project, in my projects I always try to put it in the project inventory as well, I would appreciate it 🙂

Great progress Roland. 👍 love your pilot's seat, the finish on the back really pops out.

Roland Revolvermann
Thank you Torsten and Gary!
Torsten, I'll try to remember the colors 😄
5 January 2022, 21:49
Roland Revolvermann
Somehow the fun is clouded by the really bad plastic and the many flesh that has to be removed. Not good for a 2021 tool. Pity ... I don't understand how a new tool can have so much flesh in 2021.
7 January 2022, 07:53
Torsten
The quality is criticized by several, is there a statement from Revell? The kit is then again not so cheap!
7 January 2022, 08:19
Dash Rendar
Quality seems to be all over the place. The one I have in my stash looks pretty much perfect with almost no flash at all. Haven't checked all the parts for sunk plastic, but looked good from what I was seeing.
7 January 2022, 11:10
Roland Revolvermann
Well, it's always difficult to say whether it's cheap or overpriced. I tend to see the second here: In comparison, Meng or Tamiya, for example, manage to produce a model with MUCH more parts at a lower cost and MUCH higher quality. Here you clearly pay for an expensive license. Everyone has to choose 70 parts for 50 € 😄

But, the kit is not bad, it should simply be much better in 2021.

Dash, maybe i just wasn't lucky with my kit 🤷🏻
7 January 2022, 11:36
Gary Kitchen
I agree Roland the guns are pretty soft and a lot of flash on mine too. These would be ripe for a resin cast for some fine detail but if you're paying £50 for a kit you don't really want to be forking out on resin too. I'm on to the guns and engines tomorrow so will post some images up too.

For fun I sprayed different metal colors on each of the gloss and matt primer. All great colors. You can also polish afterwards. However, the surfaces are relatively sensitive. Now I just have to decide which colors to use LOL

I finally decided to do an in-flight pose. Fuselage glued together. Didn't really fit badly; but not really good either. I would say "Ok ish"
20 January 2022, 20:08
Chris T. An
Really nice, the AK metal colors will turn out great, I think. In my opinion the texture of the surface is a bit rough on some parts. I did not sand and polish it, I was afraid that I would lose some of the structure and panellines. The question is how extremely "polished" the metal surface should look in the end. High gloss? Matte? Silk matte? I'm not so sure myself yet. How will you do it? In some detail photos from the series, the metal looks shiny, but the dirt looks matte; in others, the metal is also rather matte. Difficult. Probably everyone has his own approach.

Konrad -
Forgot to put the like button😬! Nice progress Roland 🤘🏼
23 January 2022, 14:35
Roland Revolvermann
Welcome Chris! Yes, the true colors are pretty cool. I'll use them mainly to work on the panels with brushes. The character of the surface also cost me some research, since it is not clear whether it is glossy or matt. In my opinion the original finish is semigloss/gloss metallic. However, most of the surface is already so badly weathered that it is more likely to be perceived as "dull/matt gray" or "matt" (see old MIG-21). I will try to apply "polished aluminum" as a base coat as shiny as possible and then weather it with the oil paints and matt thinner. Let's see if it works. Since this is only sci-fi and I'm not a perfectionist, I'm optimistic anyway LOL
Here are some screenshots collected. You can see that it looks different from every angle. You really can't go wrong 😄

Thanks Roland, I already know this collection of photos, I'll try to follow it a bit. There is always a tablet PC at the work table with the photos in the highest possible resolution for checking. 😄 And I agree with you, it will probably be a mix of glossy surfaces and matte smudges. Since I also work with pigments when weathering, a final clear coat is always mandatory for me. So I'm not sure yet how I'll manage to make some glossy and some matte. Let's see how it turns out.
26 January 2022, 14:21
Black Baron
To me it looks like a dirty car. The surface is OK, just the uneven dirt & grime on top making it hard to tell what's going on. There's also different shades of metal panels. The sheen is also different if the ship is in bright or dimm light as light is reflected through the dirt layer if it's bright enough.
As this is a fictional ship and we don't know if different shots were tweaked to look different there is no absolute truth. I would pick the look & reference you like and go with that.
27 January 2022, 19:43
Roland Revolvermann
Applied AK Black Primer and Microfiller. Next I will apply the gloss primer. My test shot showed that the Gloss Primer does not hold very well directly on the plastic and tends to form webs.

looking really good Roland 👍

That flat black coat looks pristine Roland. 👍

Thanks Guy and Gary! IMHO Best primer! Quite the opposite of the ak "gloss base" 😄
Applied AK Xtreme Metal „Polished Aluminium". It's „okisch" but im not really happy. Let's see if i can polish the surface.
7 February 2022, 16:13
Roland Revolvermann
Ok, polishing was not a good idea LOL I got some scratches in and the surface was only matting instead of shiny. I have just primed again and test the wax colors right now.

Thomas Kolb
Besides being a cool build, this is also a great experiment with metalizers and primers. I am taking notes!
8 February 2022, 14:37
Roland Revolvermann
Hi Thomas and welcome! Yes, for me it is actually a practice object on the subject of "metal". I don't have any experience with this (except for Jets nozzles).

I forged my own metal now 😄 it's a mix of "Titan" + "Steel" + "Blue Metallic". I'm happy with that now. It has that "Grimdark" style that I wanted 🙂

Of course I bow to your superior skill set. I haven't found my wash or PLW of choice as yet. Using ultimate products at the mo for both. Never had decent results with AK PLW. What are you using to take it off after a day. I might try again.
22 March 2022, 19:21
Roland Revolvermann
Thanks a lot Gary! Although I really appreciate your praise, this technique is more for the non-talented like me 😄
I just pour on whatever washes and panelliners I like, wait a few hours or a day (a day is better) and rub it off with a kitchen towel. The smaller areas are treated with a cotton swab. If there is too much left on it, I use a brush lightly soaked in white spirit (Odoreless). It is perhaps important that there should be a good layer of clear coat underneath with a different solvent than the wash. In my case I use Vallejo Mecha varnish Gloss and AK Enamel washes. IMHO Vallejo washes aren't that good because most of the time they leave drying marks and you have to remove the stuff quickly. Otherwise you can't get them down. That's why I only use Vallejo washes when I need drying edges as an effect. I'm generally not a fan of Vallejo (except for the clear varnishs) and acrylics in general. But that's just my personal opinion. Others get along very well with Vallejo.

It's done! It was a great kit. If you don't have a problem with the slightly overpriced price, its is unreservedly recommended!

I love the Razor Crest 👍 but the display stand is in my eyes ugly (no offense meant!) and not up to same standard as the ship
25 March 2022, 09:34
Gary Kitchen
Great finish Roland 👍. And agree it was fun to build and relatively few issues. I like your smoked canopy glass- great stuff. I still think the guns let it down a bit and are probably crying out for a resin replacement with sharper details but as I've said before, because you're paying the Disney premium, the kit's already pricey enough.

Are you sure it's not also the Revell mold in a different box?
25 March 2022, 19:43
Roland Revolvermann
Thank you all for your kind words! Much appreciated! Cheers 🙂

@Thomas To be honest, I didn't give the stand much thought, except that I wanted it in copper. Tastes are different 🙂

@Gary Yes, that's a good point. The guns are really not well made by Revell. Also the Mando Figure is really bad. That's why I didn't use the figure.

I don't know, Torsten... Someone posted it as a new tool. We will see in the future.
