Hello everyone. I am an early thirties dude looking to get back into the hobby. I basically have nothing tool-wise right now and I would really appreciate it if I could get some input on what is must-haves to start, nice-to-haves etc. I am thinking of sharing a wishlist prior to ordering and maybe getting some feedback on that?

Hello Daniel

The list could be long, but for me the must haves are:

1. a good pair of side cutters for plastic. I use the Tamiya pointed-nose ones. A little more expensive than some, but they leave little or no clean up after you've removed the part from the sprue.
2. Tweezers. I have straight, curved, and a reverse pair (that grips the part when released, thus freeing up your hand)
3. You will probably find that a pin vise comes in useful at some point.
4. Sanding sticks (although the ones I often use come from the cosmetics section in the department store!)
5. A scalpel with sharp blades will come in useful for cutting and some clean up

You will probably want to start paint with brushes, but if you become more into it, I find an airbrush is a great investment.

That's all for now. I'm sure others will add to this! :)
Good luck, and welcome!

It is nice to have an assortment of metal files, to avoid wearing down your sanding sticks.

For photo etch: glue loop applicator, cyanoacrylate debonder liquid

Secret to airbrushing: 1) thin the paint 2) use appropriate air pressure 3) keep your airbrush clean/undamaged 4) use a ventilated spray booth

Hi Daniel,

For building you'll definitely want Tamiya Extra Thin Cement, a hobby knife with lots of blades (#11 X-Acto for example), a sprue cutter, a cutting mat, CA Glue (Medium and Thin), sanding paper/boards/sponges of various grits (400 up to 1500 at least), Tooth picks (i.e. cocktail sticks) are your best friend, Model Master's clear parts cement, decal solutions (Micro Set and Micro Sol for example), blue tack, and Plastic putty of some kind

For painting it will depend on what kind of kits you'll be building and are you planning to use an airbrush or hand brush. There are a lot of good paint options and you can mix and match them too. Obviously check to see what your local hobby shop carries if you don't want to be ordering online. You will need Tamiya masking tape - don't settle for anything less.

Some good-to-haves are: good lighting (LED in the 5000K range), a pin vise, tweezers, q-tips, magnifer glasses, bamboo sticks with crocodile clips are good for holding parts for painting...

Mostly good advice, my 2 p worth would be when painting take your time and dont feel pressured to go into airbrushing until your ready. Very good results can be achieved with brushes as well.
