Btw, I am planning on buying a new spray booth soon, but, I know that the one I want won't have that nice flat exhaust opening as seen in that second photo. I wonder how hard it would be to create something similar, and connect it to a hose with a round opening. Would be nice to be able to open a window, but only so far, to let the flat piece stick out, and not the large circular hole from a large duct.

Btw, I recommend a carpet, or better, some floor protection plate for office chair. Only a question of time before you have a spill onto the floor I think.

Treehugger, on Amazon and eBay there are exhaust tubes available for a very common 'cheap' spray booth. You could see if you were able to find one fitting your desired spray booth.

Thanks @Neuling! One way or another, the project will end. I'm not sure I will be satisfied with the result but that's okay. Being unsatisfied with one's project is the key of one's skill developement. 🙂

@Treehugger: Patrick is right, mine is also from Amazon. But there are loads of tutorials how to create your own, theoretically cheaper than a pre-made one. And thanks for the advice about the carpet. I will get some floor protection plate for the room. 🙂

This particular part was hard to find, I actually only found two. One on eBay that also comes with a hose, and then this 'Manrose ducting round to rectangular adaptor' with a 20+ cm wide flat exhaust, with outer diameter of 100 mm (which apparently should fit *inside* the hose of the Benchvent extractor I want to buy. I think I'll go with the Manrose one, as they seem to ship outside UK and is far cheaper than the one on eBay. It is admittely not 100% guarantee that these two parts will fit. Specs for Benchvent hose says 100mm diameter, whateve that means. If they both have inner diameter of 100mm, then a short intermediary object could be used to connect the two, sized 100mm outer diameter. 🙂

I got the idea from reddit (can't find the source right now). My father is a welder, and in his workshop there is a big metal bender. With the help of that, the arch was created. There are two pilons on both sides of the table, those are the places where the arch has been screwed to the table. Then I ordered some natural white self-adhesive LED strip (2 metres) and a little device to be able to change the brightness (my borther did the electric circuit related work, since i don't know about this topic). The power supply, the dimmer device and the switch are hidden behind the desk.
The arch itself is 125 cm wide and its height is 70 cm. The metal which creates the arch is 2,5 cm wide and the widht of the LED strip is 2 cm so it was quite easy to stick to the inner surface of the arch (altough there were 3 places, where the self adhesive layer did not work so super glue was needed).

Such an interesting project. Bad lighting when working is imo very annoying. Hard shadows from a strong light above isn't good either.

I think I will consider making something like this. I wonder, if RGB lighting is preferred, so that you could tune the color, or just use some regular "plain" white'ish light (the ones I've seen and used were a mix of plain white and yellow led SMD's on a strip). At the very least a neutral white'ish color would be desirable, as opposed to a "cold" blue or "warm" yellow color.

I have this Ikea table with a loose table top, so for that it would probably be a good idea to use L shaped base plates to get a firm fix with the table.

Another argument for RGB SMD's could be, when working late, you could adjust the color to an evening environment, assuming that doesn't make things tood dark (more yellow evening light, than "daylight white" light.

Another thing that came to me just now. When I used LED strips, they were encased in plastic, and so.. I airbrushed the transparent plastic with Vallejo's white primer, to get a more diffuse light from the LED strips, worked nicely.

Hm, perhaps a simple way to add plastic around the metal beam, is just pull over a transparent hose of some kind, then one could airbrush that to diffuse the light if one wanted that.

The problem I had with LED strips, was having the lights too much in my face just beside my head in my home-made spray booth, so I guess LED strips over your head looks better, but still, maybe don't look directly at the LED diodes.

As for a tubing, maybe a good choice could be transparent water tube, then create a metal bare that fits inside, however, heat might become an issue with LED SDM's trapped inside the hose, perhaps a longevity issue more than fire hazard?

You're right, at the two sides of the table, there are two L shaped metal pilons. So the fix is strong and stable. Honestly, the arch itself is suprisingly stable.
Yes, adjustable warmth is a great idea. +1 for RGB LEDs. And yes, the LEDs are enclosed in clear plastic. Priming it or cover them with a clear plastic tube and then priming the tube to create more diffuse light is a good idea as well. However the arch itself could heat up a little bit after long usage. Not hot or anything like that but you definitely feel the heat at the back of the arch. Maybe the perfect solution will be some little pilons alongside the arch to hold some custom made light diffuser.

Actually, perhaps the metal bar would help cool off the SMD's. 🙂 Sort of like a fan-less heat sink. Uuh, ofc, if trapped inside a tube, then maybe not much again. Hm.

@Joerg R. I haven't used a clear plastic tupe yet. It's an idea which might get implemented in the future. 🙂 The LED strip has its own clear plastic tubing. I mean, the LEDs and its small electronics are in a layer of clear plastic.

Don't worry Irving, I cleaned up my workspace for the photo. Usually It is a lot more messier. 🙂
