curious about this one. i have it in my stash (in theory, in practice it is about 1700km away) and i want to see what can be done with it.

Protip, the best way to make the holes for the sides, is to NOT drill holes, but to just scrape away the plastic on the back side, until the holes show. Ofc, one would have to be careful. This way, the holes will magically open up, by simply removing the plastic on the back side.

Treehugger, I assume you're refering to the holes along the sides of the hull? Good idea, but I hadn't even looked that far ahead yet.

Watching, of course 😉

Ah. Old kits are always fun. I will be here to watch

Welcome aboard, mateys! Last man close the hatch behind him. If it fits, that is...

Having started applying the decals to the interior. I'm faced with a problem: After 24 hours, the decals have totally failed to adhere to the surface. This is despite using Microsol & MicroSet on them. So far, I've only tried the red dots, so paint is always an option for them, but I can only wonder how the rest will behave. Without the decals, this kit is a bust.

Sorry to hear that, John... Perhaps some diluted Kristal Klear would help, or try to find the dedicated decal glue from Tamiya range:
Decal Adhesive 10ml (Tamiya 87176, No)

Good suggestions, thanks, Robert. I hadn't heard about the decal glue. I was considering a dab of gloss varnish or Future to seal them in place followed by an all over coating afterwards. At least I can experiment with the red dots as they are expendable. The problem is that a lot of the instruments stand proud of the wall and the decal is about the same diameter as the plastic cylinder, so there is limited scope for the varnish/Future method.

Most id it is back decals, you could scan and print in decal paper, even with just a simple laser printer

Spanjaard, I've scanned the decals as a precaution.
Robert, I've managed to find some Tamiya Decal Glue, in Italy! None to be found in the UK. It will take a week to arrive, though.

Hi John, 🙂 accepting that my build is a lot less accomplished, however I frequently get the decal problem with my old kit builds.

I have previously managed this issue whilst still using the original ancient set with my in-progress Mirage 2000 build. Getting them to adhere with a solution mix of very weak PVA and water. May be worth a try if you're wanting to press ahead? Just a suggestion 👍

I too will be ordering some decal glue, thanks for the tip Robert 👍 build looks stunning BTW 👌

You're welcome, Mates! Before Tamiya's adhesive I used diluted Kristal Klear and it worked well. Nice progress, John!

Thanks, mates. It's not looking too bad if you don't look too close! I'm currently cleaning the flash and mould seams from the crew figures. At the moment, I'm carving a raised ejector pin mark off a sailors bottom. There's a first time for everything! I think I shall be suitably cross-eyed and cramped by this evening.

Oh nice! 👀
Interior looks good in my opinion. Keep it up. 👍

Thanks, WhiteGlint. I've got loads of filling & fettling of parts to do before continuing. Almost every crewman has a deep ejector pin mark at the base of the spine and, needless to say, most will be positioned facing the back wall.

Not meaning to take your pain lightly but I couldn't help but giggle a bit at your last couple of captions describing the issues. Nonetheless, it is looking good so far!

Kyle, I knew what I was getting into before I started. I just didn't know how deep it was going to be!

Well you're doing a great job with it.

Thanks, Kyle. I'm still waiting for the brass tube to arrive, but I'm painting the crew figures in the meantime. At 1/125 scale and, needless to say, poorly moulded, it's a bit of a "do the best you can" job. This U-boat is going to be crewed by half-melted Autons.

😂😂 Well that's totally understandable

Interesting, thinking of getting one too sometimes

Well, Lukasz, be prepared for a LOT of remedial work if you want to get anything even half way decent looking at the end. The parts are very poorly moulded. In fact, the moulds are well past the useful end of their life and need scrapping. The decals are awful. By the time they come loose from the backing paper, they've already lost their adhesive! It's a great shame really, as it's a nice idea for a kit. Personally, I love the fact that the map tables are about shoulder high to the crew figures. Come to think of it, where is the helm? I've not seen any one driving this thing.

I doubt I will ever finish mine (barely started it 20+ years ago)

Thx John, that's a real food for thought 👍
