I recommend Tamiya masking tape even if using a brush. But, consider removing some of the adhesive before placing them on any painted model. You can remove some of the adhesive by placing the patch of masking tape on the top of your hand (assuming you washed your hands). Placing the masking tape on a table surface might do the same, but seems much less effective.
