The chassis parts were painted long ago for the 67 Mustang GT. That build has had a change of plan so this chassis is going into the Shelby since they are exactly the same.

Body in primer after a lot of trimming and sanding to get both ends to fit nice with the body.

Painted the body today. Not happy with the results. Tamiya white primer has fine orange peel and rattle can blue exasperated it. Plus I ran out. Likely to go for a swim in the purple lake.

Well after a month of unemployment, my oldest son getting married to a doctor, and two weeks at a new challenging job, I revisited the body. Too much texture and not exactly the color I wanted, has it now in the purple lake. I need to find a dark blue that is not metallic. Any recommendations?

Well you do have an airbrush now, try mixing your own color, start with just about any blue then add either some black to darken or white to lighten. small amounts of another color will change it as well. by the way the customers from your body shop are starting to complain your taking too long! LOL

Tim, The customers will have to wait a bit longer. My new job has been working me 11-14 hours a day for 3 weeks straight while kitting out a van on the weekends. I actually had to tell my supervisor he had to lighten up my workload because I was starting to lose my sanity.

Already lost mine! Good luck with yours!

If you mix your own colour, count the drops of paint to get the mix ratio AND write that down. Chances are you'll need it someday...
I didn't lose my mind, it was mine to give away 😄

I tried to give mine away but no one wanted it!

Martin, thanks. If I ever get to custom paint colors, I will do that. I keep a journal of all my air brush sessions to record what worked and what didn't.

Got to work on the Shelby a little bit this evening. I continued the assembly of the interior. The body came out of the purple lake virtually unscathed so it just got submerged in some brand new brake fluid. We shall see if that works any better. The windshield replacement from Bob came today so it has joined the rest of the parts in the box.

Bob is great for saving the day.

Bob is my hero. He sent me a built up 67 Shelby for parts because I want a more realistic engine bay in the 68 Shelby. I transferred my painted body into brake fluid. I put Bob's painted body in fresh Super Clean. I just checked a little bit ago and both of them are sloughing off paint pretty well. The prospect of getting a decent 67 Shelby are finally improving. 🙂

Been slow going due to a busy life. Interior is finished. Body still in brake fluid.

Thanks a bunch Bill!!!! Now I have to build a workshop Dio to show off my WIP vehicles! And I'm going to have to do one in 1/12 too. And when I'm done with that, I guess I'll be forced to build a 1/72 hangar as well!

Having a diorama is handy. I makes a good place holder for builds in progress.

It looks great with the in-progress builds on the ramp. I had been thinking of doing something like this for my 1/12 Tamiya Race car builds as they are so accurate on the structures and build order, a part built kit in the right setting can still be a display model.

Christian, Thanks. I just need to get motivated into finishing it.

Here's some motivation: Finish it! We need it! We're plastic addicts and we need YOU to get our fix

Struggling with paint again. Got a so so white base coat down. Waited a few days. Started masking stripes per Shelby spec. Paint felt a little tacky so I only did the hood and the nose. Just checked under the masking tape. Sure enough, masking tape texture embedded in the white stripes. GRRR. Back in the purple lake again. This is sad. The interior and chassis have been done for months.

Crossing fingers, that the nice interior will get a good body!

Well had the paint booth out to try my new PS-290 airbrush. Got the hood back in primer. Hope to shoot the white for the stripes tomorrow.

Let the white cure long enough to get to masking the stripes. I used some BMF type material from some UV lights that we install at work. The adhesive is excellent for masking purposes. It sticks extremely well, it does not pull up the paint, and it does not leave residue when removed. The foil is very form fitting and strong. Since it has no texture like masking tape, it cuts well too. It will hopefully get to spray some color soon.

So you are not going with the chrome look stripes for the finished model?? What a shame! 😀

Tom ...
Huh, I didn't see this one. Looking great. Very curious about the metal foil.

Nigel, After getting close to done, the chrome over white combo looks pretty cool. I will need to try it out on another model someday. This one, I have my vision set on the white over blue scheme.

Nigel wrote out this, what I wanted to say too. It would be unique with the chrome stripes.

Tom, In my HVAC job wee occasionally install UV lights to kill organics in the airstream. The fixture comes with these foil gaskets that never get used. The foils is very shiny and the adhesive is VERY strong. The adhesive thickness makes it not good for chrome trim because once wrinkled or grooved, it does not smooth all the way out. However, for masking it is really nice. No bleed under and the adhesive does not leave residue when removed. However, it is quite tacky and will likely pull up paint that is not well adhered.

I got Testors dark blue sprayed on last night. I thinned the paint I decanted over a year ago 50/50 with lacquer thinner. At first, I was going horribly. It sprayed out very rough and looked like it was crazing the white enamel sprayed a couple of weeks ago. I was starting to get frustrated with what looked like another paint failure. After I ran out of paint I added less thinner. On the 3rd batch I was down to 75/25%. I said "the heck with it" and laid it on really heavy while avoiding runs. Surprisingly, it started to level out and gloss. I got some dust in the hood and some lint on the roof but it looks doubtful I will have to repaint. (Though I have not removed the masking yet). The color blue in the pics looks a little more vibrant than the real thing because of the fluorescent lighting in my paint booth. I think I am finally over the hump with this one.

Try using Mr Self Levelling Thinner. The name says it all.
Nice blue by the way!

Thank you Kyle and Martin. 🙂
Martin, When I run across some I will buy it and try it.

Pulled the stripe masks off. My new foil masking works great. No bleed under, no added texture, no adhesive Suprisingly effective.

Kyle, Nigel and Dominik, Thank you. 🙂 I ran across the white stripe decals that came with the kit. They would have been a serious disappointment. They are not tapered and have a slight yellow tint to them. I wet sanded the dust bits out of the hood this evening. The paint is still not quite cured yet. The sluff kept trying to tint my white stripes. I need to wait awhile longer before I can tackle the roof ridge.

I could say that I have been letting the paint cure the last 6 months but, in reality, other things have taken priority. However, now that I am on my "Big Girls" project, I need some bench space to work on the all of them. With 4 new builds and 3 unintended long term projects, I need to do some clean up. I have been hesitant to sand down the ridges on the roof on each side of the white stripes. I generally do not have the patience for sanding and I did not have an appropriate tool for accomplishing the task. What I needed is a 1;25 long-board sander that can be operated by 1:1 fingers for knocking the ridges down without messing up the surrounding areas. I finally figured out the perfect little sanding block. I cut 1" of Plastruct I-beam then wrapped it with 1 sq in of sandpaper held by a mini binder clamp. It provides a narrow 1/8" x 1" of sand paper and plenty of "handle" to guide it. The real benefit is it requires zero muscle tension to keep the little bitty sandpaper square in place, even if you set it aside. It works great at the sink for wet sanding too. Maybe the Shelby will actually get done this year.

Fantastic idea Bill. I have a few of those binder clips laying around.

Boring *lol* Just kidding.

I used to take clothespins to hold sandingpaper. This idea with this binder clips is worth testing it.

Btw.: your paintjob is just classic. Nice.

I made tiny bit of progress on this one. I painted and panel line the grilles black. I was tired of seeing the white stripes through them. I need to do a clearcoat test on the hood and then BMF the body. I also need to find where the decals ran off to.

I have been working on this in the background. I just noticed I have not posted anything for a year. Anyway, It is done. The interior and engine turned out great. The paint is acceptable enough since I want to just get it done. This ended up being a 3 year project.

Comments welcome.

Thank you, Christian. 🙂 Future is my go to as it is low cost and never reactive to underlying paint.

I gotta admit, I've been distracted by your garage. The amount of detail and accuracy, amazes me to this very day! Obviously, the Shelby is beautiful, but so is everything in this Diorama. The figures add some awesome perspective and set up each scene, just right. Definitely well worth the wait.

Shine, shine, shine. Cool build. Nice garage indeed.

Thank you, Bozzer. I admit I have more satisfaction from the workshop with all the trinkets and contrasting colors. The magnets in the items (and people) really help keep everything tidy.

Thank you, Michael. 🙂
