Bob in Spokaloo This is a very cool repackaging of a Monogram kit last seen in 1970....with upgraded photoetch rigging, nice new decals and some resin parts...looking forward to this one

Welcome aboard!....take a seat, though...this one just got here and is in line...

Bob in Spokaloo Starfighter Decals Monogram BFC-2 Goshawk - Yes it is from 1967.....this is what qualifies as a speed build for me....the plane was basically all built in a day and now its time for paint decals and rigging....

lets see if i can actually do a plane without redoing some part of the paint job...a mediocre modelers goal, for sure.
12. April at 01:33:46
Bob in Spokaloo Starfighter Decals Monogram BFC-2 Goshawk - The kit provides a nice resin turtleback for the top of the plane....too much surgery for my taste...i wanted to try this rigging out soon...so, it wasn't used and sanding and filling was done instead.
12. April at 01:38:23
Bob in Spokaloo Starfighter Decals Monogram BFC-2 Goshawk - Lots of little fiddly photoetch later - well, it might be fun

Bob in Spokaloo Starfighter Decals Monogram BFC-2 Goshawk - Based on the kit info and historical hints - the fabric covered areas are silver, the metal covered areas light gray and the tail is a squadron color - I chose green
15. April at 01:18:27
Bob in Spokaloo Starfighter Decals Monogram BFC-2 Goshawk - so, if its photoetch, it should go on first and be painted, yes....?

..unless its photoetch rigging...some of this rigging was taken off and will be replaced with a second set of etch...probably, the fact that it is rigging should be more important than it is photoetch

10. April at 05:03:17 Share
Bob in Spokaloo This is an excellent kit and should be a fun masking and decaling project....it will also test my finishing skills..there is much to paint.

I try to have one complex model going at a time, with other less time consuming projects in the mix...this is the complex project and won't really get going for a few weeks....while the current "complex" model gets finished up.

Bob in Spokaloo Trumpeter 148 H-81A-2(AVG) Flying Tigers - Machine gun installation - don't bother with it much- it doesn't show.

Probably the kit maker needed to have the guns for marketing reasons but they really don't show up at all...I ended up cutting them and putting the ends in place

its easy to see the great panel line and rivet detail this kit has now...this should be a good candidate for a panel line wash

Bob in Spokaloo Hobby Boss 1/48 F4F-3S Wildcatfish - This is a refreshed look at this model - it was put away for a variety of reasons, but should be an easy project to finish now.

Its on hold until a couple of others get done
22. February at 19:34:06
Bob in Spokaloo Almost an entire day of rescribing after paint removal....the lines on this kit are beautiful and subtle and need a bit of help.

Actually sort of excited about using the sludge wash panel line method on this now......repriming, repainting etc still to go before that stage.

..two steps forward..one back...on it goes,
19. March at 01:12:29
Greg Baker what's a sludge wash method? This looks neat.
19. March at 01:20:48
Bob in Spokaloo hey Greg...I used it on this model...

The method itself is described in the finishing doc that can be downloaded here:

Bob in Spokaloo Hobby Boss F4F-3S Wildcatfish - Primer coat for repainting - I do like this Mission Models Black primer a lot - goes on easy and smooth 50:50 with their thinner - Paasche H external mix tip 5
22. March at 20:38:18
Bob in Spokaloo Hobby Boss F4F-3S Wildcatfish -

This kit has been through the ringer...the wings came off at least three times...so, its just time to finish it..it won't be the best wildcatfish ever...not by a wide margin... (somebody did an astonishing model of this airplane, with exposed ribbing on half and the other half complete...amazing..and for a single plane that never really did anything)

...but, it might be OK...its now been rescribed and, if I can stay patient and let the Future dry so the panel lines work, it might be fun in the end...
25. March at 02:37:58
Bob in Spokaloo kids...don't try this at home....

..."this", being using a decal setting agent clearly designed for enamel paints...it sez so right on the label, bob...on an acrylic paint and expect good things to happen....

...no, what will happen is two giant steps back, strip all the paint from the fuselage and start over with primer....

is there good news?...yes.

..the pontoons, elevators, rudder and cowling all look very nice after future and panel line wash and will be set aside as completed pieces for the assembly...once this latest lesson is learned.
6. April at 19:41:14
Greg Baker Oh man... that sounds rough. I hate when something like that happens. It's so demoralizing. At least there's the good news, right? Keep at it, the result will be worth it!
6. April at 23:48:07

Bob in Spokaloo This was a total lark - this kit came as a free add-on for another purchase - so, of course, it had to be built - a decent little kit...with photoetch and resin.

The canopies got the paint and scratch method of painting...not too bad....in all, it was a kick and fun to make the little dio using the scratchbuilt hobby horses and a background from another kit.
4. April at 04:54:58
Bob in Spokaloo Cleaned the canopies inside and out and re-coated with Future...New photos....looks a bit better...these canopies were from a previous paint attempt.

Bob in Spokaloo
Question....

how do you folks clean up an acrylic paint surface before gloss coating?

I am stumped...water actually makes some paint run...what else is there that could be more inert than water? But, these ARE water soluble paints...is there a solution that does not interact with the paint?

Note this is not about cleanup before primer...its after the paint has gone on.

Thanks all
15. March at 22:57:26 Share
Richmond Looking at the Getty Conservation website it seems, to me, to be an issue that still requires solving however I did find this https://wikihow.com/Clean-an-Acrylic-Painting - not a scale model I know..... but still!

Bob in Spokaloo Planet Models 1-48 Miles M-35 Libellula - After initial resin construction and vacuformed canopy

Resin loves CA...so much that I couldn't move the little wings before they settled in. Next is a slower setting CA to give a guy a fighting chance.

In any case, this is a first for me (resin, vacuformed canopy)...so far, its looking OK and this resin model (I've seen worse!) really has some nice detail and shows what resin can do.

Bob in Spokaloo Miles M-35 Libellula???

An experimental carrier takeoff and landing aircraft, developed in secret (which pissed off the air ministry!) by an English crew in early WWII times.

Not ever really followed up. The big deal was the rear prop and the big windshield. They were to help with visibility in takeoff and landings from carriers.
16. January at 05:20:37
Bob in Spokaloo Planet Models 1-48 Miles M.35 Libellula - The masks are off, the camo is done and the bottom is sure yellow!

Bob in Spokaloo Planet Models 1-48 Miles M.35 Libellula - Finished

This aircraft was actually fairly innovative...a very small plane that did not need its wings folded up for carrier use.

The build was fun...first time for resin, vacuformed canopy and white metal undercarriage. The kit is very well detailed and goes together nicely.

Problems....mostly my fault...lost a scoop after cutting it off wrong and just plain forgot the instrument panel inside.

Was it fun? You bet and it inspired me to get some more Planet Models kits.

Resin parts prep question...

What is the best way to prime resin?

Do acrylic primers work or is it necessary to use an auto body primer or something like Mr Surfacer?

All the parts have been made squeaky clean with Super Clean to get off the mold grease, so that's been done.

Thank you...
7. January at 04:14:04 Share
Bob in Spokaloo ....and how about filler?

Can we use a regular putty (like Perfect Plastic Putty) on resin or is there a better choice?

Does it require a petroleum based filler like the green Squadron stuff?

Thank you....
7. January at 05:23:00
Bob in Spokaloo Have you figured out I'm on my first resin model? Lots of questions.
7. January at 05:24:23
H K Not an expert, but I never had any problems with Citadel primer ( acrylic) or regular putty ( Revell Plasto/ Vallejo putty)
7. January at 10:29:30
Bart Teunis Well.... you can use every kind of primer ( AK, Alclat and Games workshop are very fine primers) and Basic Putty from Tamiya doesn't shrink the least
