Valters Orlovskis The best way to paint gold panel lines on this kit is gold marker:
Progress | Album by Angelos (1:24)
26. November at 10:10:57
Chaz Gordon I've experimented with Sharpie Metallic markers under Clear coats. So far, the Tamiya Solvent based acrylic clears do not harm the sharpie, haven't tried water based, but I'd guess a fairly safe bet
26. November at 15:04:13
Tom ... Excellent build Valters! After I messed up the first panel line I did the others free hand with the sharpie and go mixed results. I think I need to find a sharpie with a fine tip, preferably a chisel, rather then the big fat tip I have now. My next build will be the fire truck so I'm going to be asking you how you did your lights. They are perfect.

Also I don't care for the Alclad Gold Plate colour. I think for the fire truck I'm going to try some other paints out first. The Alclad is too dark for my liking. I'd like something a bit brighter.
26. November at 20:06:02
Valters Orlovskis Thanks, Tom! :)
The Centropen Gold marker I use has a quite sharp tip. It was cheapest Gold color marker in shop but I chose it because of size of tip. Color is a bit dark but it works nice.
About lights - if You mean side lights then ring in front of light is made from copper wire, connection point was soldered and sanded, and then glued to plastic with clear Epoxy, which at the same time fills external perimeter between ring and plastic. The tricky internal parts for all lights was reflectors, actually it is very easy to make them, but hard to explain all in words (especially because my english is not very good :) I'll make a picture of process later and then post a link here. And important step is good planning of gluing / filling / sanding / masking / painting sequence.
About painting - I use AK Interactive Xtreme Metal Brass color but made a mistake when choose black base instead of some light color. The black base gives good "volume" effect for surface but at the same time final color appears too dark.
If I remember correctly the painting sequence for side lights was following: some metallic color (inside of clear parts), Black primer (Vallejo), Black base (AK or Alclad), Brass (AK), Tamiya Clear, Light Grey wash (Vallejo) and finally one or two coats of Tamiya Clear.

Hans Robben Tom, what stops you from altering the current tip to a shape you need?
26. November at 22:45:24
Tom ... Good point Hans. I hadn't thought of that.
27. November at 00:03:32
Tom ... Valters, thank you for the info. I look forward to the how-to pictures. Good to know about the AK metal brass too. I love Alclad's chrome and aluminum, (though I might someday try using Molotow's liquid chrome) so I feel good about those colours. Just need to figure out a good brass and I'll be really happy... for now :)

Bill Newcomer I have the stash growing faster than I can build them problem too. I had about 10 kits I moved from house to house for years. Around 2004 I finally got some disposable income. The economy was bad so I snagged a bunch from ebay before the shipping prices got so high. It has taken about 15 years to actually build around 30-35. Somehow, I have acquired 178 kits with very few duplicates. Fortunately I have 98% of what I want. The rest are a $100+ original issues. I really do enjoy building but seeing the quality of some peoples builds is driving into perfectionist mode. The problem is that doing so is very time consuming. I am going to try to back off and find a happy medium. On the way home I had to FORCE myself to NOT swing by Hobby Lobby to pick up another kit. I need to focus on solving how to paint in the house without upsetting the wife with the fumes. I have the skills to build a ventilated paint booth. I just need to research the size/airflow requirements.
20. November at 00:59:09
Tom ... Ha, Bill! I'm always looking for a reason to drive by the LHS. We should start a support group... :)
20. November at 08:24:51
Tom ... Also, tonight I did some Alclad priming and with the new ventilation there were no fumes in the house. Very happy with that. I may even default to using (decanted) Tamiya Surface Primer for all my priming now, even though Badger's Stynylrez is super good. Maybe use Tamiya for the initial coat and then Stynylrez for second and third...

Bob Hall I have the original 1987 issue of this kit, looks pretty cool !
4. October at 04:21:24
Tom ... I'm excited about this one. Just wish life would give me some time to do some actual modeling....
4. October at 21:28:19
Bob Hall I feel ya, 100% !
4. October at 21:48:24
Munkyslut I had a 1/16 Japanese XJ-S (probably Bandai ?) when I was a kid.
I grew up with them, really nice cars, make for a great model
4. October at 21:52:17
Bob Hall When I was a kid, I had a friend who's dad loved the Jag's and the XJ cars, but hated the unreliable engines and owned 3 Jags but had replaced the motors all 3 with Chevy 350 motors.
4. October at 21:55:44
Munkyslut Bob........ SBC into XJ-6 & XJ-12 was a popular mod Stateside.
Of course over here we just repaired them.

Tom...... what's the kit quality like?
4. October at 22:06:34
Tom ... Munky it's not bad at all. The plastic is quite hard (even feels slightly brittle) and the details are sharp. For me there's a little bit of flashing on sprue E but nothing terrible. The glass is in perfect condition but the quality is not great. Has a slight melted soft look which is a shame. If you look at the "What's in the box" for the kit those are actually pictures of my kit.
4. October at 22:41:19
Munkyslut That's pretty good quality except for the glass moulding then. Can you improve the glass with a layer of Future or similar?
What do you plan for colour?
4. October at 22:47:22
Bob Hall I guess, it was just one of those car memories from my youth. I was thinking of doing mine in British racing green with the tan leather interior and tan fabric top.
4. October at 22:51:10
Tom ... Definitely the tan interior but I think a light body color.

14. May at 18:49:07

Tom ... Sorry guys, I was in rehab dealing with solvent abuse and OCD issues. They didn't allow internet access but I was permitted my favourite sprue cutter and a sanding stick... my nails are immaculate!... they just need some 2K clear...

Bob, you know changing your name won't fool the drones. They can detect muscle car thoughts from a hundred clicks. Old European bangers don't generate the same level of brain activity it seems.

Yeah, it's hard to be modeling right now with the good weather... and the porch is my favourite place on the planet and we are getting long evenings again. But don't worry, it won' t be long before I get a wild hair up my butt and breakout the airbrush and glue pot again...
6. June at 18:11:13

Chris Greathouse I painted my first fig with the arcade. It was kind of exciting, but I didn't know what I was doing. For him to go from sprue color to painted was a fun process. I hope you have fun too!
19. April at 22:05:23
Tom ... Did an initial "panel wash" to bring out details. Need to find a better Q-tip. I have the Tamiya ones but they are too compact.... need to find something in between...

Also tried out AK Interactive's dirt deposit wash on the under carriage... hmmmm, I've got a long way to go in order to get any good at this.... still it's interesting and fun trying.... this might just end up a muddy mess all the same. Oh well.
20. April at 02:36:17
Nathan Dempsey That dirt and dust deposit stuff looks interesting. I may have to pick up a bottle.
20. April at 03:33:41
James C Were you able to resolve the residue issue from the hood?
20. April at 18:44:21
Tom ... James, I didn't resolved it. In this case I don't think it's going to matter as when I do a final matte coat it shouldn't be noticeable. However, in future I'm going to get into the habit of washing off decal'ed areas to ensure there's no residue left.
22. April at 21:32:19
Chris Greathouse That interesting... I have lakes of micro set when I decal, aside from the usual mop up/squeegeeing the liquid from under the decal I don't clean anything, I just let it dry for a few+ hours before I spray Future.
22. April at 22:53:37
James C That's a bummer mate. :(

I've wondered if it's caused by the gloss layer not being completely cured/hardened and reacting with the decal setting solutions?
For me It's always been caused by the Micro Set... but erased with Micro Sol or just another gloss coat when sealing the decals down. Interesting. :S
22. April at 23:25:03
Tom ... I feel like it might have been due to the decal's adhesive. I've also never had a problem before with micro set and sol. But also this was the first time I used Alclad's Aqua Gloss for coating decals so maybe it's some weird interact between them all. Like you say... interesting...

18. April at 22:29:02
Martin Oostrom I have this one Modellbauer- und Gravierset ..MOT 50/E (Proxxon 28515, No)
Similar to a dremel, with drill bits from 0.3 upwards. Is great for thinning pieces as well, just beware of the high (adjustable) rpm's

No Modellbauer- und Gravierset mit Bohr- und Fräsgerät MICROMOT 50/E (Proxxon 28515)
19. April at 06:46:00
Thomas Tuerler Martin, if you attach it to the adjustable NG2/E or NG5/E transformer, you can reduce the RPM to Polystyrol compatible numbers without losing too much power. Big fun for little money!

Bob Hall Plus Tamiya is a pretty high quality kit so it builds well, and look great completed ! Looks Great Tom !
7. April at 00:56:43
Tom ... I agree, Robert. Definitely the best fitting kit I've built so far... okay I've only done 5 but I was still really surprised how well everything lined up. The Revell MG TC was the opposite.

Allan Gage This is great..crisply modeled. I've had some issues with tamiya white decals as well. Sometimes i just couldn't get near them with setting solvent have had to rely on hairdryer. I want to try this kit , those helmet boxes are trick.

Tom ... Thanks guys.

Allan, the helmets and box are cool. However putting the decals on the helmets was crazy hard. Can't believe I didn't take a picture of them before glueing them into the box... oh well.

Chris Greathouse How do you just pick up a hobby and be this good already?? It's always amazed me. This Subaru is really well made, I like the contrasting colors, I know they're decals but it's still cool... Did you swim your decals in Micro Set to help? Great job as always.
7. April at 06:27:44
Tom ... Thanks, Chris and Robert. I have to say it looks better in the pictures than in real life.

I did use lots of Micro Set and Micro Sol. It was a bit of a love/hate relationship. For the Set solution the decals would move too easily while trying to remove the excess, so that was maddening. Then adding the Sol solution would cause some of the nicely laid down decals to wrinkle, and there where decals that the solution didn't seem to have any effect in terms of conforming the decal to the contours. I'm really impressed with your Blue Shark decal work. When I saw that decal sheet I got an immediate decal PTSD flashback.
7. April at 06:58:51
Chris Greathouse The Sol will cause the decals to wrinkle as the decal softens/stretches then it will tighten up and sink into crevices as it drys. I baby the Sol process with a Q-tip to help flatten and get rid of wrinkles as it drys.

Bob Hall Ditto, Roll a Q-Tip and it works wonders.
